Hello, I'm Alan and I have been teaching English and Music for over 20 years. My real passions are playing the trumpet, which I have done semi-professionally over the years, and more recently jazz keyboard. Also, I am a keen cyclist, long distance runner and a great lover of red wine, fine food and meeting new people. My wife and I presently live in Burgundy, France have mainly lived and worked abroad since 1991.

My immediate goal is to set up an English language teaching business online. I already have a website up and running but as yet, have no students. Over the last couple of months, I have felt quite lost in the whole process of how to drive traffic to the site and keep coming up against different hurdles and need answers without having to trawl through the net endlessly to find them. I thought that being part of a community would be helpful and, well, quite frankly a much less solitary and frustrating experience.

Look forward to connecting with more people and finding out some answers on how to make it work online.

Hi Alan, I like your websites. My wife is an English teacher (we're in Spain) and we've been thinking about different ways of doing things online. Very tied up with my own websites at the moment, though. All the best,
Craig

Cheers Craig, first time I have logged on for 5 months and you are the first person I have communicated with! I am also off to Valencia to teach English again (this time as a DoS) and helping a friend out with his new school. Cheers, Alan

Have fun in Valencia, we are about an hour away from the city, on the coast. Lovely part of the country.

Saw your trumpet photo and had to click on your profile. I am a trumpet player, semi-pro, too! Checked out your sites and teaching English is an awesome niche. Hope you are having tons of success and if not, I'm sure it will happen soon.

Hello Tracy, sorry about the delay in replying! Just this second logged on to WA after 5 months away. Needed to get back into the offline world and have been playing trumpet and keyboards in a local jazz trio. Off to Valencia for for work next week, all the best, Alan

I got invited down to the south of France for the summer and its a toss up at the moment between there and Portugal, Is there any django style Gypsy jazz still being played down that way?

Hey Alan, we are connected on Google + so I decided to check out your site - easycallenglish. It's a great concept.

I was surprised at the prices. The students here in Japan take Skype lessons from people in the Philippines (which are much cheaper). It is really hurting the offline industry. So your idea is good.

Many of us need to work two jobs to make ends meet. I do hope it goes well for you. I have a suggestion, maybe replace the WA link at Google + with your WA profile link.

ie. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/alanwelch

All The Best,

Devan

Hello Devan, thanks for the advice. Interesting what you say about the prices. I honestly thought they were quite reasonable but maybe you have a point, as I have had very little interest (which I put down to not being high in the google ranking/not getting enough exposure).

I shall change the profile on G+ as you advise. Cheers, Alan

PS. Should you get a chance, please check out my liveenglishlessons.com website. Done a couple of posts on useful websites for teaching that you might find interesting.

Thanks Alan. Oh, I think your prices are reasonable too. Especially in the EU. However, the standard of living in the Philippines is a little lower so I guess that's why lessons can be offered at lower rates.

It's all about what people are willing to pay I guess. The Japanese economy has not been good recently. Consumers are tightening their belts and looking for cheaper ways to learn English. But you know the old saying,"we get what we pay for."

I will definitely check out your site. By the way, I like the names of your websites. Cheers,

Devan

Alan, great profile, but also doing long distance running and red wine, I might be biased...I am familiar with TEFL and LEFL, as my sis is heavily involved in that sphere. Best wishes from Andy- a fellow Brit based in Sussex

Hi Alanwelch, We all have this problem about attracting students.
I believe that writing an Amazon Kindle Ebook is an affordable way to establish yourself as a credible English teacher. Perhaps you could just outline the proposed course and give one in depth example to illustrate the benefits of enrolling in your program.
Reply
alanwelch Premium
Thanks Rongdan, not a bad idea, the Amazon Kindle Ebook and something that I had not considered. Unfortunately, I do not have time for that at the moment as I simply have to many other projects. Food for thought for another time!

Hello Nam, absolutely! I was a university English teacher in China for a couple of years back in the mid 2000's and was seriously considering trying attract students from this area. Have not got that far into it yet.

My first thought about traffic to your site... is that people that don't know English may be searching in their native language... so perhaps you could take popular search terms, translate them to a language and integrate them into your site in some manner for search engines to find...

I looked at your site and it is very nice... since you live in France you might just ask some of your students or people that you know, what type of English they may want to learn... or research your competitors and see what they offer i.e., English for travel, English for business, or English to live abroad... anyway, that is my first thought.

Thank you for following me I look forward to seeing you create success for yourself in the coming months. Julie

Hi,

I wanted to take a moment to welcome you to the Wealthy Affiliate Community. I am the person that referred you to Wealthy Affiliate and as such, I wanted to let you know that if there’s any way that I can help you, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I have several online businesses so the advice and guidance that I can provide you with isn’t theoretical but is instead practical real advice that I use to make a full-time income from home.

I suggest you start by reading this post which will give you an overview of the next ten days:

There are also a ton of recorded trainings that would be useful for you to check out too:

Wealthy Affiliate is not a get rich quick scheme, but rather a resource for learning REAL ways to make money online. So take a look around and just ask for help if you get stuck or are confused by anything.

I look forward to getting to know you. Once again, welcome to the community.
