Unexpected email out of the blue. Good, bad, opportunistic - any suggestions..

Hi all,

today, I received the following email. It might be positive, then again, perhaps audaciously opportunist. Just not sure and would love to know what people thought before I reply to Paul (the sender).

Hi,

I am inquiring about whether you may be interested in linking to our site http://www.tutorhunt.com/ from your page?

http://liveenglishlessons.com/

We are a completely free service for tutors, and make it simple for students to search for all the tutors within their local area. We are currently used by thousands of tutors and students daily and feel our service is helpful and may potentially be a useful resource for your site readers.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Kind Regards,
Paul

There are plenty of honest sites that provide services, but check them out. Is your email listed on your website. They may look up sites that would have teaching abilities.

Yes, I have a contact .com email for direct contact, and I have set this up to come directly to my gmail account, so at least I know I that they guy looked at the site first.

As with any affiliation, would do your due diligence. First, how they found you.

I like to know other affiliations, age of site, what they offer, how they offer it, what they charge for materials or access or membership, number of teaching styles, facilitation v. lecture/video/outline/tasks, how they clear their students or if pre-test assessment is done, if commitment promises with time goals are used or use rubric cubes.

Also I check if they are a referral or matching service. Dimension and metrics are important to consider.

With all this, go with gut too. ^_~

Thanks very much for your lengthy comment. I asked a few searching questions and managed to find out a couple of the answers to questions you have posed from the site. I wish I had asked how they came across my site but did not think of it at the time. Still awaiting a response to my other questions, which revolve around the theme of reciprocation in terms of service.

Oh yes, gut feeling is a good one :)

I looked at their site. Looks ok to me and bookmarked it as well. I am teaching online and what to see what they are doing. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

Debbie, you are welcome and I am pleased that I brought your attention to something useful.

yep, if they link back- and ask them if they have any testimonials from living entities- they can say whatever they like about themselves, but it is more important what others say about them.
Andy

Thanks, I shall pose that question.

Looks ok to me. What have you got to lose vs to gain

Good point and judging by reactions here, it appears to be more positive than negative. Thanks.

could bring you some business if you spin it right

Cheers, spin doctoring it is!

Hi, I think the site looks pretty authentic. I would think that if they link to you, then they are driving traffic to you. You could clarify with them how they are planning on doing this. Terri

Thanks, yes I was wondering if they might also do that as this would be reciprocal and mutually beneficial. Thanks for the comment.

It looks okay to me. Be aware that there are tutor scams out there, but I don't think this is one of them. However, you should read this whole thread before you decide:

www. thestudentroom. co. uk/showthread.php ?t=2140402

I had to put spaces in the link as WA does not allow links in threads that use this link type. So close all the spaces when you enter it into your browser.

Thanks Jude, just had a quick look at that site and it is evident that there are some unprofessional dealings somewhere along the way. Thanks - food for thought.

It is in the same niche area that you are in teaching people something. Maybe it will be beneficial to you to link with them to get some of there traffic.

Thanks Tommy, still trying to get my head around how I would get traffic from them. Obviously if I was linked to their site, I could see how that might work. The other way around - would I not be potentially driving traffic away from my site?
