Is cloaking your affiliate links a good thing or not? what do seasoned WAs or SEO savy people say?
If one thing I've noticed it is constant with Google throughout the years,

Just wanted to update with the video I spoke of. It's pretty clear that cloaking is a no-no and will get you in trouble.

Post: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/a-quick-word-about-cloaking/

That's why in the original post I made the distinction between masking and cloaking. In the yoast article they talk about redirecting the semantics of these actions may differ based on user, so if you are talking about "cloaking" meaning any way to change affiliate links, including redirecting, masking, shortening, and nofollowing, then OK, i do that too and it's fine. I just wouldn't call that stuff cloaking.

I just wanted to make the point that you should never deceive the user, browser, or spiders to game the system.

There is a difference between cloaked and masked links as far as I call them. Cloaked is 100% bad. It means that when you click a link on your site it takes the visitor to another site but does not display the correct URL in the browser bar. Masking is generally accepted as a convince for your website and is just used to make your aff links look pretty. This is probably what you are talking about. Your links looks different on your site but when they reach the site you lead them to the real URL is displayed.

Thanks Nat, your explanation cleared things a bit more. I thought Cloaking and Masking where the same technique with different flavors.

Very helpful thanks nathaniell, was just trying to find that distinction. I use pretty links to make my links look nice but they then go to the relevant product page and display the real URL - this is Ok right?

Yes, that's OK.

Cloaking can be seen in a few ways for me its firstly to keep the site looking tidy, also I feel most people who go to sites looking know that there is stuff for sale and lastly we are advised to do it in a certain way to prevent google seeing us as spammy thus avoiding penalities. as well as cloaked links I do have certain advertisements there to

I have always Cloaked my links where I can,

What plugin do you use Pro2100?

I don't use a plugin, Commission Junction has it built in. And for all others I just use TinyURL

Hi and thank you for taking the time to help out.

I am normally a possitive person, but when it comes to sharing an idea I find it difficult to share it without that feeli

This is something that you cannot control, if you want to move forward then getting feed back is something needed, there are so many idea's out there I am sure you will still find success in whatever your doing

It is just a habit. You can let the go. There's an abundance of ideas.

As a conclusion to all comments you guys were nice to give, it totally makes sense not to worry or stress about this, and just keep the good practice and keep moving forward working on my content. Thanks!!

I believe in Karma, what goes around comes around. You can fear your ideas will be stolen .... and lose out on valueable input. If someone(s) "steal" your idea then it wasn't the idea you were suppose to bring about. Make sense and of course this is my opinion? Best of Luck to you -

So true dembler! :) and the fact that I already know what you say, it bothers me that I forget once and a while hehe. Great spiritual reminder thanks and good luck to you too!!

Playing wise: It's an inside fear, bigger and deeper and doesn't concern only this site. You probably have some old wounds which are still not healed. You lost your trust in people somewhere on the road.
You have to realize you focus on them, on others, too much. You shouldn't care that much. After all we are following our own paths, they may steal from you an idea or two, but you are still one step in front of them.
And think that you get inspiration from others, too. Really, so many people told you their ideas, knowledge, even one thing that you didn't like, could have been leading to an idea.
If they steal ideas from you, it means they value you, be proud, it means you have helped them, be proud again.
On the other hand, competition should not make you hide in the cave. Fight for your success!
There is only one Google and one Amazon, though I'm sure a lot of people stole their ideas. :) Yet, the best wins.
Be the best and don't look at others any more.

Wow Laura :O, if I could put a 2 thumbs up on the like icon I would!! hehe. Very uplifting, reassuring and right minded wisdom, thank you very much!!
God bless.

I don't know how to protect from either. I do have a site that's stealing my posts to move up on 1st page. But, I can't quit adding content to my site. Occasionally, I ask for a review of my content, but not all the time. I would at least ask for enough feedback to know your on the right track.

All I can say is that I share your concern.

I don't show my website and am considering not sharing any more posts for review. This is because I've read several experiences on here of people copying others content.

I put to much too work into my content just to have some someone go and steal it!

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, I dunno.
