In order for your domain to point to WA Hosting, you need to update your DNS (Domain Name Server) settings within your Domain Registrar.

OK, before I completely lose you with all this "DNS" talk, I will help you understand what is happening here.

WA Hosting is where you are going to be putting all of your website files. These are the same files that load when people will be visiting your domain. Your Domain is the address of your website. In order to connect these two items, you need to tell your domain where to look for the files. This is where the DNS settings come in. When you update these to point to WA Hosting, we automatically know where to look.

The name servers for Wealthy Affiliate Hosting ALWAYS are:

Primary: ns1.mywahosting.com
Secondary: ns2.mywahosting.com

In order for your domain name to point to your web space, you need to tell it where the web space is. To do this, we use something called "Name servers". A name server is simply an address that you need to point your domain to in order for it to connect with your web space.

The place that you update your DNS settings, will depend on where you purchased your domain (Domain Registrar). This will likely be:

GoDaddy.com
NameCheap.com
1and1.com

We are going to explain how to update your DNS within all of these system in the upcoming pages, so choose according to where you bought your domain.

I created a website before joining WA and I want to add it to my WA account but in order to do so I need the DNS. What if I don't remember where or whom I purchased this domain name from? Is there a way I can find this out online?

Edit: even better:
go here and type your domain in the input box:
https://www.internic.net/whois.html

Sometimes the information given is a bit misleading, though. Like mine says Enom, when I actually registered it with Namecheap. Namecheap was acting as a reseller to Enom. It should at least closer to the answer. If you contact the support at the registrar, they should be able to help you, even if you used a reseller.

(original comment)
If you go here:
https://www.whatsmydns.net/
and type in your domain name. Change the dropdown that says "A" to "NS", and it will tell you what nameservers your domain is pointed to. That SHOULD give you the answer you are looking for.

Alternatively, do a search in your email account for your domain name. You should have an email from the registrar as one of your first emails. Assuming you are the kind of person who keeps emails. I hope! ;-)

I have a .de Domain that won't work with the DNS changes. My Host also says I could try it again if the nameservers know the Domain. My questions are now if i even can get an .de domain? Is WA even concepted for German websites? Will german content even work with WA keyword tool?
Reply

After updating the DNS changes for a domain, it can take up to 2 to 3 days for those changes to be replicated throughout the internet.

You are interested in two web servers knowing that change, the WA web server and the web server that you use to go out to the internet, that is your Internet Service Providers web server. Once both those servers know the DNS changes, you should be all set for the next step.

So you may just have to wait.

Oh, the 2 to 3 days do not have to be traditional business days.

In the meantime, work with the WA keyword tool to confirm or otherwise if German content will work. I would be very surprised if it does not.

You should be able to change the DNS to WA's nameservers

ns1.mywahosting.com
ns2.mywahosting.com

If your registrar doesn't allow for NS changes, then you'll need to get a domain that allows you to change the nameservers. If you have to get a new domain, I'd recommend going with WA as your registrar. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites/domains

I really think that I am at a loss! I have to admit that I am a newbie in online marketing. In the first place I had a wrong understanding of Domain Name. I thought it was my company name that I registered with the Georgia Office of Secretary of State (De La Cruz Enterprises, LLC) and the website that I was intending to use (www.delacruzentllc.com) which I did not buy anywhere else. I would like to get my Domain Name through WA Hosting. PLEASE HELP !!!

Go to the SiteRubix menu item, click it to open the secondary menu. Select site Domains and purchase your domain there. You do not need to add the www. to the front of the domain these days.

Hi there,

I am working on setting up a G Suite account. The first step is to verify that I am the owner of (domain name). In order to do so I need to add the following TXT record to my DNS settings:

google-site-verification=M9XmarM_kAMveN08Dc8B5I9e-TG9t5xtEh0bPIMEI78

Can you please add this for me?

Once this is added, please delete any existing MX records and add Google's MX records.

Please let me know when this has been completed.

You can find WA training on setting your DNS addresses at godaddy by typing the words "dns godaddy" (without the quotes) into the WA search bar. (You shoukd look for the most recent training since godaddy has changed their site several times over the years.)

Hi,
Login to your GoDaddy account, then on the first page it takes you to.... at the top, it will say "Domains" and should display your actual Domain Name. Look to the right of that box then click on DNS then look for this "Nameserver" Click on the "Change" Button Select "Custom" and add following for WA :
http://NS1.MYWAHOSTING.COM
http://NS2.MYWAHOSTING.COM
In the respective boxes
Then click save at the bottom, and you should be good to go.
You may get an email notification from Go Daddy about the recent changes follow any instructions if needed.
Note: it could take a bit for the change to reflect. If you still have any issues Go Daddy is pretty awesome and rendering assistance.

Hope this helps. ')

Domain names do not need to be transferred to use them for hosting sites at WA.

You can use the domain name even while it's still stuck at godaddy by changing the DNS address settings to point the domain at WA's hosting servers. NoMo9-5Grind has provided the steps to do that above.

I have just renewed my domain registration on DreamHost and set up my DNS settings to point here to WA but have a couple of questions (hopefully quick ones) please -

1. Does it now mean that the website previously registered and hosted on DreamHost, is now hosted here on WA?
The domain registration remains with DreamHost which is where I will renew each year?

2. Since doing that, I have set up my website here but I don't see any of the pages/posts from the website that I had created there. How do I get those?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks folks

Once you have pointed the DNS to another company, the site is hosted there.

So now, your site is hosted at WA and the domain is still at DreamHost.

The content you created before changing the DNS gets lost if not backed up.

I am trying to change my DNS settings on 1&1 to point my domain to WA. I entered ns1.mywahosting.com under Name Server 1 and ns2.mywahosting.com under Name Server 2 and hit save but when I go back in to check the DNS settings it has reversed the two so that Name Server 1 shows as ns2.mywahosting.com and Name Server 2 shows as ns1.mywahosting.com. I called 1&1 but they could not figure it out and told me to wait until the changes update. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Thanks!

I would ignore looking for a "Launch" button, and explore the contents of "Manage" and "DNS".

I'm not currently on GoDaddy, but any registrar constantly changes their interface, so it is almost impossible to keep a guide on how to do things 100% accurate to what you see on the screen. Explore, but just be very careful to not click "save" or "commit" or whatever unless you are really sure you want to make a change. The "cancel" button is your friend when exploring an interface.

not familiar with GlobalNPN but most are similar. You want to change the servers at Global to our servers here with
Primary: ns1.mywahosting.com
Secondary: ns2.mywahosting.com

Chances are when you log into Global NPN and click on manage your domains or something similar you will see some wording about the different things you can do. You can click on your domain you want to change and then look for words like 'manage DNS' or like that. Look for Name Servers and then click to change the name servers. You will put the above ns1.mywahosting.com and the ns2 in and then click save.
Now, not sure if Global is similar to the others but if so this should help a bit. If not, then ask in the live chat or contact support at GlobalNPN for assistance.

May I suggest that you put in a request to site support, explaining exactly what you have done. If you follow the advice from marionblack about backing up your site, by using wp clone, then change the DNS settings in godaddy to to the WA settings, once your site is hosted here, you can perform the restore from wp clone yourself, or ask site support to help you do it.

You should set up your site on WA first under a siterubix domain, and then transfer your domain to it.
You can export the content from your site on GD, then import it to your site at WA. You are just basically transferring everything to WA.

Does that make sense?

I just called GD and they said the redirect in is progress. I don't have access to my websites or domains at this time.

They also said I need to contact WA tech support to get a ZONE FILE set up since my emails that were connected to my domain names are no longer accessible.

I was of the understanding that my emails stayed at GD since they were registered there. Ahhh....what a schmozzle.

I looked around for tech support, but the only thing I found was in the Site Rubix - Tech support ticket.
I assume there's no 800# to call to get immediate assistance, is there??

How frustrating! I would submit a support ticket with WA letting them know what happened and that you need a ZONE FILE set up. Here...

If you're using HostMonster like I am, here are the steps:

1) Click "Domains" tab next to WordPressTools.
2) Check the Domain Box on the bottom left side where your domains are.
3) Click the "Name Servers" tab.
4) Click "Use Custom Nameservers"

This is where I had to call HostMonster..
So I didn't see that you could scroll down because it doesn't look like there's a section to scroll down from how it's cut off. Now I know and just wanted to make sure others didn't waste time contacting them after reading this.

They said it could take up to 4 hours to take effect.
Hope this has helped!

GoDaddy is your registrar, one and one is the hosting. Since you are with WA, you can host here. You won't need an account at 1&1.

You may want to consider transferring your registration to WA at some point (instead of renewing at GoDaddy) For now, just point the nameservers to WA and use the hosting here that is included with your Premium membership.

If you purchased the domain at WA and you have a siterubix site, then you can go into the SiteRubix menu item, and click on Site Manager. Here you will see your siterubix site. In the boxes at the bottom of the site listing there is one called move.

Click on this and follow the prompts. You will enter the domain name that you purchased and the content on your siterubix site will appear on your new domain.

Then you just need to add more content on the new site.

sounds like you bought your domain name at godaddy?

or did you buy hosting there?

can you remember what you signed up to there or bought from them? Sounds like you don't have a website set up already

Domain names are bought for a one off fee of a few dollars and renewed every year, but they still need hosting, you point the domain name from wherever you bought it to whoever your host is - you've got hosting with your membership here and it is cheaper than their top hosting plan there, so all you have to do is put the WA server numbers into your godaddy domain name account, when you log in they've got a box for that [search bar should bring up some training on it]

Why pay twice for hosting or keep your website hosted on a cheap plan or why pay for and drive a cheap car when you've already paid for a racecar here parked round the back, unused?

the search bar top of the page gives lots of explanations on this

All you are doing is telling the world, through GoDaddy where your website is being hosted. Think of the domain name server the same as the card catalog file in your public library, you look up the book title (in our case the website) you want to see, the card tells you which shelf and book number to look for to find your book, in our case the domain name server is telling your web browser what hosting server (WA) has your website and where to look to display it on your screen.

It's actually pretty simple even though not exactly intuitive. :-)

You want to point your GoDaddy domain name here so you can use that domain name on the website you are going to be building here. You can leave that domain at GoDaddy and not point the servers to WA but then you will need to come up with a different domain name or use the free sites. It is more professional looking to have your own and the pointing of the servers is as easy as Kyle points out. Once you do it you will be surprised at how easy it was.

If you are going to have WA host it then the DNS have to point to the host who host the website. Your domain can remain parked wherever it is at now, but for the Search Engines to know where the WordPress install in it is, then the servers of that domain must point to the host.

Thus... point the DNS(s) to whoever you want to host it.

You change your DNS server names on the site where you originally purchased the domain name. That is where you enter the WA DNS server names.
Reply
TheDummyOfWA Premium
I did that, and they said the name servers don't exist...lol
Reply
tgtobb Premium
What were the nameservers you entered?
Reply
TheDummyOfWA Premium
What it listed : Primary: ns1.mywahosting.com
Secondary: ns2.mywahosting.com
but without the primary and secondary in front of them! I moved domains to other servers before, and I even ran my own server years ago, so I know how to put in name servers, but IPage doesn't like those nameservers...lol
Reply
tgtobb Premium
Those should work, they are the same as one of my sites. When you enter them in the dashboard on the IPage site where you bought the domain name, make sure there is no extra space in front of or after the addresses. If IPage allows more than the two nameservers, then just get 2 additional from OpenDomain and add them as well, never hurts to have an extra directory anyway.

Barring any success there I would open another support ticket with WA and request new DNS servers. Don't add that request to an existing support ticket as it may just muddy the waters and confuse things even more, a new ticket is best in my experience. :-)

I also see a couple of other issues that are not necessarily DNS related.

-- Your URL is not simply http://everythingfamilylife.com/, you need to add an s for SSL, thus making it https://everythingfamilylife.com/. That gives a nonspecific 500 internal server error which is too generic to be meaningful at all. :-(

-- Do you have the numeric IP address of your website from your control panel? If so enter those digits in your web browser (no https, etc.) and see if you can open your site from there. If that fails then there is another hosting server issue other than DNS on the WA server. The numeric IP address ignores DNS entirely and goes directly to your website server.

The problem with my domian is that it needs to be on either the primary or secondary DNS. Now the question that was asked of me was where did I purchases it, and I was given three choices, However, it was purchased here at WA, so I would assume that today when everything went down My domian was taken out of its DNS. So If anyone runs into that problem I will be able to help.

Question for anyone who understands. OK!!! I followed the instructions for Setting up DNS above. When I clicked on add, it gave me three options for DNS so I chose to go with what happened when I chose custom in the drop down which gave me two name server options. Was that correct? Or is there something more I should know about what happens when I clicked on add, and should I have chosen that instead?

Hi all!

I need a bit of clarification...
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with what I have to do or really confused what the WA Premium program is offering me in terms of domain names and web hosting....

I have a GoDaddy WordPress hosting account with 3 domain names purchased from GoDaddy.

Each of my GD domain names comes with it's own email account.
-What happens or what needs to happen to have everything come under WA?
-Do I need to close out my GoDaddy WP hosting account?
-If so, do I lose my entire email accounts?
-Will I be able to have email access for the domain names hosted at WA?

I'm afraid to do anything "techie" like changing anything in case I lose so much email info...

Thanks for any guidance anyone can offer.
Lost in tech overwhelm,
Joanne

Are you paying for the WordPress sites you created thru GoDaddy? I just used GoDaddy for my domains and then pointed the server to here as it says above. Are you using the email accounts and are you active on the WordPress accounts you have? If not, you could just point the servers to here as in the training and set up your email here. Unless you either point the domains here or transfer them you won't be able to use them so I guess it is a matter of how active they are. Not sure this helps but maybe someone else can come in and help further.

Hi MsMerry,
Yes, I paid GD for hosting, renewable every 2 years - up this year, I think. One email isn't used, the other two are.

Are you saying that if I transfer everything over to WA, I might lose the existing emails in the account, but moving forward, I will still be able to use those email addresses?
Reply
MsMerry Premium
I am not sure on that one Joanne relating to the emails question. Yes, I pay GD for my domains and hosting is done, but never bothered with the email set up. I didn't transfer my domains, I just pointed the DNS server to WA on Godaddy and then I was able to use my chosen domain name here. I use my email that I set up here as it is easy to do. Probably yes, you would lose the emails but not certain of that. Sorry, I am not more help, but it does make sense that the emails could still be active if you don't transfer but instead point the servers to here. Your host is still GoDaddy for your domain names, but if you want to use those domain names here, you have to do one or the other. Am I muddling things more for you?

That's a good amount of work.
First, start with your least important site and do them one at a time to completion before you start the next one.
You'd have to back up the GD WordPress website with a plugin.
Backup email account for that domain
Either transfer the GD domain to WA or leave the GD domain in place and just point to the WA Nameservers. I think domain pointing would be safest, as it gives you a fallback plan if things go awry. You can always transfer them later.
Once the domain pointing or transfer is successful, you install WordPress on a site here (very quick process)
You install the same backup plugin from your old site.
You restore the backup file to your new WA site.
Test.
Test some more.
Configure email on the new domain. Decide if you want to forward emails or have three separate accounts. I like forwarding. You can reply as the specific account, and there's a lot less fuss with dealing with all those accounts.
Restore email. (Process varies depending on if you are using a client like Outlook or a webmail like Gmail)

After you are satisfied that everything is running ok, you can start your next one.

After all three are done, and everything passed its tests, and you get your friends to verify that they can get to your websites, you can consider terminating your GoDaddy hosting.

If things don't go so great, you can just repoint your nameservers back to Godaddy, (hopefully you documented the old settings first) and decide to just leave the sites at GD or hire someone to do this.

Random additional notes:
I should also mention that you should understand the limitations of Wealthy Affiliate hosting before you do anything. You do not have cPanel access, direct access to the databases, or cron jobs. That isn't a problem for the vast majority of people, but some custom plugins and self-hosted email autoresponders will not work.
You asked for clarification on what you get here at WA. WA includes email hosting and forwarding at no additional charge. You can point domains registered elsewhere to Wealthy Affiliate for no cost. If you transfer your domains, I think the current cost is $15 per domain per year, which includes Whois privacy protection. That is an expensive add-on at Godaddy.

You're welcome. It was an interesting problem so I wanted to lay out a step by step instead of just contributing missing parts.

The email is the difficult part. Or at least the part that makes it more complicated. I think doing the domains one at a time is better because you are confirming that the process works. The last thing you want is to start the process on all three domains at once because you're trying to save on time and possibly labor cost and then realize that there's a problem. A contingency plan to go back to what you had is also great to have.

The first thing I would do is go to your current website, export everything to a document, and then save it, just in case something happens. Here is how you do that... You can transfer your domain name and import everything from your old website onto your WA website. Then you can cancel your GD account, because you get free hosting with WA. You get your own email for each website with WA as well, I am not sure if you can use the same email address, but you can try to create the same one if you go to "Email" after clicking on the black square with the airplane up top. Here is a video to help you transfer your domain... I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.

Hi MsMerry,
I think this is making sense :-)
I need to better understand the WA hosting and domain service. I understand about redirecting the domain name, but need more on the hosting side, especially since my membership fee covers this. Then, I'll have to learn about website development and all!
Oh my!:-)
Thanks for your contribution. Much appreciated.

Hi Foobard,
Thanks so very much for all the detailed reply. You are awesome!
My GD websites aren't being used, expect for one is just a home page. I've been waiting to set them up once I knew what I wanted to be or do when I grew up! :-)

Can you help me understand more about what you said....

You said, "You do not have cPanel access, direct access to the databases, or cron jobs. That isn't a problem for the vast majority of people, but some custom plugins and self-hosted email autoresponders will not work."

Does this mean that if I want to use tools to build email lists, such as LeadPages, and email management tool, like AWeber or Mailchimp to capture email addresses, I won't be able to with WA??

And what are the implications of not having access to cPanel, direct access to the databases, or cron jobs?

And, that the WA premium fees for hosting are far more affordable than, say GD?

So much techie stuff that I need to understand to make decisions, and I thank you for your very valuable info and feedback!
Thank you!!!

MailChimp and Aweber will work with WA. They are paid services that are hosted by third parties. I was referring to self-hosted solutions, running directly on your own server. There are a lot of downsides to doing that, and a higher level of technical knowledge is required. Just google "self hosted autoresponder", and you will see a bunch of articles, and some that go into all the potential problems.

WA hides the complexity from running a website. They make it extremely easy. In return for making it easy, they impose some limitations. These limitations only apply to a very few people who are "techies" for the lack of a better word.

As far as the implications of not having access to those techie features, there really isn't any. They would only matter if you wanted to create a custom database, and write custom SQL queries to it, if you wanted to run Joomla or some other CMS that is not Wordpress, create scripts to run at scheduled times, etc. This is all stuff you aren't likely to be doing. WA is a wordpress host. It is logical for them to limit what people do to just wordpress. It is easier to support, and it is easier for the user, as there isn't a maze of options to choose from.

I am here mostly for the training. The hosting was just a bonus. But, yes, I think WA is better than GD for hosting.
Sorry for the delay in responding.

This is so clear. Thanks for the detailed explanation. One moe wuestion..do you know if eight WA I could run wish list?? As a plug in to run/ host ,manage online courses where clients can go to access resources??
Reply

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking here. If you are going to be offering online courses, I would use a platform designed for that, like Udemy https://www.udemy.com which is most known for their public courses but offers private courses too, or there might be other ones that allow subscriptions and private courses, like maybe this one https://www.proprofs.com/training/
You could create and host your online training courses in one of these other third party engines that are designed for that purpose and then link to the training from your website.

But anything is possible, but "anything" often requires custom coding, which can be very expensive to contract out, hope it is done correctly, and then it has to be maintained, which is an ongoing cost. Using third party services can be a lot easier to manage. Plus they come with built in support.

Good points. I'm probably nit picking since I find it hard to get clear about technology when I can't have a verbal chat to talk my ideas / questions through.

Thanks again for your very helpful chat. I also feel better about dropping Go Daddy and staying with WA as my hosting company. :-)

You're welcome. I like helping people, and it makes my skills better as a bonus.
Well, if they offered phone support where you could actually talk to someone, I guarantee they would have to charge more. But again, in my view, the value in WA is maybe 80% in the upsell-free education, 10% in the networking, inspiration, and motivation, and maybe 10% in the included hosting.

@Foodbard,

I'm seeing lots of questions going around best hosting options...So, I called GD and learned my annual hosting cost is $119 CDN firm, and with WA, I pay out on average per MONTH $79 CDN with fluctuating USD/CDN Exchange rate each month.

I understand I'm paying WA for the education, networking and awesome support/feedback, like you offer as a community member.

I guess this is why I'm hesitating to move forward beyond Course 1, lesson 1 where I need to set up my website account!

So, in essence, WA is the same as GD hosting, and they are offering the free websites to choose from, with training on how to build and maintain my own website on my already owned domain names (which can be renewed through WA if I choose later, with access to my existing email through WA, and the extra costs of about $800/year is the education, and active community?

Sorry if I'm appearing a bit daft with all of this, but my gut is stopping me from moving forward until I have full understanding of it all :-)
With awesome kindness sent your way!!!

Joanne, I checked that also with GD and I chose to point my domain servers here because I have the advantage of learning so much more. I have never paid to host at GoDaddy for my domains. I just keep it all really simple and only have the basic domain without all the extras. We don't really need that right away.
I did the comparison and actually did a review.
You have your domain name, it is paid for so why not just point the servers here and you can learn how to do this yourself. In the end, it is the better way to go. Hope this helps a bit.

MsMerry, I'm good with redirecting my domain names, I was just really comparing the hosting fees - GD $118/year vs. WA about $500 (CDN).
The $400 difference is education and community, I guess.

I'm not sure what "switched" means, but it sounds like you transferred the domain to WA. So it is all here. It is not pointed from Godaddy. DNSSEC

Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) protect your domain from attacks such as DNS cache poison attacks and DNS spoofing. Your DNS provider can provide you with the values you need to activate DNSSEC.

Ok, so who can help me resolve this? When I transfer to WA for hosting, This is immediately after.
