OK, so we have the theory and we understand SMART so now we need to talk and think about your 10 year goals.

"They" say that to make god laugh you should make a 10 year plan. I used to agree with this too, how can you make a plan of any length and expect to stick to it with the way life throws curve balls all the time. It is simple, you have a constantly changing and adaptable plan. Let me give you an example.

Jon always wanted to be a big rig driver, he wanted this more than anything, his dad had been one and he wanted to be like his dad. At 18 Jon graduated and made a plan, he had taken MikeyB's POWER training seminar in Denver, Colorado and was fired up.

His 10, 5 and 1 yr plan was set and his power action plan was in motion, he knew about the PAP and the minor and major reminders (Dont worry you haven't got there yet) He felt great with his plan and every Tuesday night was his night to evaluate his weekly goals. At 20 unfortunately, his dad passed and they moved from Denver to Michigan, the plan took a hit. He knew that with a major reminder thrown at him that he could stop the current plan for a while. Once in Michigan he re evaluated his purpose and his core intentions and he realised that he wanted to study as a truck mechanic in Flint and then get an income to help his mom. This was put down in his 5 yr plan and he worked his weekly PAP. At 22 he became the mechanic but he had never taken the rig driving off his 10 yr plan and now each Tuesday he reworked the PAP to his goal, is goal had changed from 10 to 12 yrs but that was ok, he was still on target.

His plan had changed and he took a break but came back to the plan in a new light and still worked his dream.

In the beginning, working a plan from a diary seems like hard work but you know what - success is work! getting where you want to be is work! Doing things that other people don't want to do is work! and dammit if being successful was a walk in the park then we would all.....be walking in the park!!

So get your head around the above and lets do it.

I want you to take your A4 notebook and with a big fat red pen write at the top of a selected page, MY TEN YEAR GOALS. Now, these goals will be quite vague or may be vague. Unlike other goal setting I do not want these 10 yr goals to be super specific yet, and you will see why. I dont want a date or a colour or anything super specific - YET.

Next I want you to write a big P in the margin and I want you to put down in there where or what you want to be from a physical context in a few bullet points.

Example MY TEN YEAR GOAL

P 1) I want to be fit and healthy at 32, 42, 55 (whatever your age will be in 10 yrs)

2) I want to be sober

and so on...

I do not want (at this point)

1) I want to be fit and have biceps 32 inches in diameter and be a salesman in Sarasota or the Gold Coast selling a leading muscle gain powder - TOO MUCH!

or

2) I want to be down to 2 pints of Coors on a Friday Night or 6 pints if it's Monday Night Football - TOO MUCH!

Remember the goals are fine just not too specific at this point, ok.

OK, so keep it quite simple and work your way down, maybe 3-5 goals, maybe more in some sections but do yourP, the O, the W and so on.

Once you have finished you need to just run each goal through a SMART test.

(since posting this I have had a concern about SMART testing a 10 yr goal - Although SMART says to test your goal to see how specific it is, I do not want you to worry about specificity on your 10 yr goals, I like to think of the S here as Simple - Thanks Skyhorse for the query)

Is your goal Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Reasonable and Time-bound.

Have some fun with this, talk to your spouse, your kids, believe me its quite cathartic and makes you feel great. You finally have a say in YOUR life, maybe for once. It is important to make goals public or known

When you are finished, take a breath, review and chat about them again.

This is important....

PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK, YOU HAVE COMPLETED MORE ON THAT PAGE THAN 97% OF PEOPLE EVER HAVE, YOU HAVE STARTED TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE AND YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD.

Tasks 0/3 completed
1. Discuss your 10 year goals with someone — make them known
2. Write down your 10 yr goals
3. SMART test your 10 year goals

Hi MikeyB-just confused myself. Ha. It is better to start with Skyhorse's goal course, then yours, correct? Thanks a lot.

Lol yeah. We both talked about it and mine goes into the mental aspect and more on obstacles and such with your goals, then his is the goal setting. Although mine does do goal setting as well. They are a tag team event.

Mikey, you have no idea lol. But both the theory and practical experience is important. You can't have one without the other.

@Jenna, well thank you. I try to be active!

Excellent in every respect, Mike! There's a saying: "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." Thanks for providing both a path and a guiding light.

WOW, what a powerful course. This is what I have been in need of for the last year or so.

I have been jumping around all over the place and not accomplishing a blasted thing. So, I am bowing up and getting things organized and my goals laid out with weekly plans so that I can progress.

THANK YOU for this valuable course. God Bless you richly. :-) Jerry Mc

What is an A4 notebook?
What is a "coppers jotter" (A7 notebook)?

In the US most people are used to sizes - - an 8.5 inch X 10.0 inch notebook is most common.
Smaller sizes/measurements are available.

You will need a notebook about the size of a regular sheet of paper. A lined common notebook. A copper jotter is the small flip type pad, this is your daily notetaker and pad that is with you for notes and ideas

How can we run them through s SMART test if you want them to be vague and not specific? They will fail because, "be fit and healthy in 10 years" isn't specific. Yes it is achievable, but no its not measureable, and only the person can say if it is realistic or not.

So how many do they need to pass for the SMART test then?

They can SMART test a vague goal absolutely. The goal at 10 years is vague by design as life changes and SMART testing at 10 is a futile exercise. If 'be fit and healthy in 10 years" is not specific at 10 this is ok as it becomes more specific at 5 and 1 and immediate. Getting goals down in a form that can be realised is a first step. I would not 'specifically' know the house I want in 10 but I know I want one. The S in SMART can also be Simple. The course is an exercise in getting these goals down on paper, this alone is major for most people.

Skyhorse, I have amended the 10yr goal SMART test with an addendum to specificity, thank you.

Ok, I forget that sometimes. I have studied goal setting for several years now and even have taught workshops about it. So sometimes I forget that others don't do what I do. Thanks!!!
