Another Earthquake in Alaska!

I am sitting here working on a new post for my website and everything starts to tremble. We just had another earthquake. It wasn't too bad this time. So that is nice. We have SO many earthquakes here. We have had 2 earthquakes over 7.0 magnitude in the last 3 years. Most people will never feel an earthquake that strong unless they live in a few parts of the globe like the Pacific Ring of Fire where we are here in Southern Alaska.

The earthquake 2 months ago here was 7.9. It was hundreds of miles away so no serious damage but still quite an active way to be woken up in bed! Tsunami warnings went out for the entire Pacific Coast from Alaska to Mexico and Hawaii!

2 years ago we had a 7.1 much closer and that actaully caused broken glass in my house! That was the only time I have had damage. The lid to the aquarium fell into the tank as well. (The fish were ok)

15 years ago we had another 7.9! And of course in 1964 (long before I was born) Alaska had The Good Friday Earthquake which was 9.2, 9.3 or 9.4 depending on which source you read. It was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in North America. My Dad was here in Alaska for that. He had a dream about the destruction to downtown Anchorage with the streets cracking open 2 weeks before it happened!

I guess this one tonight was only a 4.5...those are just a little ripple in our ever moving earth.

Good night everyone

Jessica

Stay safe!

Thanks.

Wow! Glad you're all safe. I've never felt an earthquake..not sure how I'd handle it!

It is ok if you are used to them and they aren't too big! And of course we live in a region where everything is built for them. I would be terrified in a part of the world where that isn't the case though!

The idea of an earth quake scares me. Jessica, I'm glad that nothing bad came from this one for you. Or nothing too major in the past.

Thanks Sondra!

Hope you can sleep a bit, earthquakes are terrifying

We are pretty used to them. Thanks Loes.

God will protect you.

Thank you.

Yikes! Stay safe, my friend! That's amazing! Your Dad was spot on from his dream. That speaks for itself! I never thought about earthquakes in Alaska before, but now I know they absolutely happen. Glad this was only a tremor!

Yes, we get more and larger ones here than anywhere else in the U.S. Of course many other countries get them too like Japan, Mexico, Chile, New Zealand, Turkey and more. We are supposed to get one huge one like the 1964 earthquake every hundred years here! It is because we are in a region with lots of volcanoes and also on the boundary where two tectonic plates come together. The Pacific Plate subducts beneath the North American Plate offshore from Alaska. Similarly, in California two plate also come together causing earthquakes. Those two plates are sliding past each other however instead of one going under the other. The same thing happens all around the "Ring Of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean which is why Japan, Chile etc get lots of earthquakes too.

I seemed to inherit some of Dad's premonitions. Not about earthquakes but other things.

FASCINATING! I never studied about THAT in Geography! I love learning more about countries and places---and the different patterns of nature for each! Thanks for that great lesson---very scary but intriguing!

That is why geology is interesting here. I thought geology sounded horribly boring before I took it. Dad told me it was interesting but I didn't believe him.

Then I took my first geology class in college and I loved learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. I went on to take 3 more geology classes but that first one was the most eye opening!

I never took Geology, and Geography obviously doesn't cover that. Maybe I can find an online class! So glad you enjoyed your studies! Your Dad has guided you well! xoxo

I'm scared when I hear about Earthquakes Jessica despite the fact that I've never experienced one myself apart from just a little tremmer when I was a young boy. Thank God that it wasn't serious at and didn't cause any damage at all.

Thank you for your concern. I understand. Some things really scare me too!

My husband gets nervous when we have not had an earthquake for a few months. He feels like we may get a really big one then. They say it doesn't work that way, but we still feel like it does! When we have them, it seems like it will release some pressure and we won't get a huge (1964) earthquake again.

My office building is constructed to sway in all directions and also rotate and gyrate in an earthquake! It is built on rollers in the basement so it can move in all directions. Small earthquakes feel larger in the higher floors.

You live in a place so different from me. It is interesting to hear and learn about it. Pleased you are safe. We have our dangers this side of the world too!

Yes, we also have blizzards, cold, hurricane force winds and active volcanoes I can see across the inlet from my office!

What are your hazards? I am always interested to hear about other parts of the world! I love geography and majored in anthropology.

Our climate here is one of the best in the world.
My daily danger is crazy mad drivers! So odd but humans behind a wheel can be very dangerous!

I agree! They go 80 mph here in a blizzard!

Thank you for sharing Jessica. Good night.

Thanks, good night.
