What about this phenomenon? As some of you know, we added two new K-9 members to our family. Abby and Gibbs (of TV show NCIS fame) are Cavachons. They are twelve weeks old, and they have made a HUGE difference in our lives. I am absolutely convinced that they have lowered my blood pressure by 15 points and certainly improved my mood and patience. Cathy says I have become a nicer human being (of course my first question is….what was I before…but that is a post for another time).
But……..we also have two 13-year-old Norwich Terriers (Mason and Dixon – of Civil War fame). Conflict of Interest? Yup, without a doubt!
Norwich Terriers - laid back, like to relax more than exercise. Cavachons - Not so much.
Norwich Terriers - like to eat in a quiet atmosphere, take their time and not be disturbed. Cavachons - Not so much.
Norwich Terriers - Are content with walking around in our back yard, doing their business and coming back inside. Cavachons – Not so much.
Norwich Terriers – each has his own plate of food, and they do not “steal” from each other. Cavachons - Not so much.
After one month of being together here is how our furry children have resolved their conflicts of interests.
The puppies play with each other and leave the older guys alone. The Cavachons acknowledge the age and wisdom of the Norwiches and understand that they have their limitations when it comes to patience. The Norwich Terriers understand that these are “puppies” and that although they are a pain in the rear (literally sometimes) they are now part of our lives and therefore MUST be allowed to become part of the family. Both sets of dogs have realized that they can, must and will live in harmony.
Lesson learned? Perhaps we should turn the United Nations over to animals? Food for thought?
Happy Sunday to all (or Monday for some of you)
Steve
