Why Pictures are so Important to your Posts

I have noticed a lot of new blogs do not utilize pictures well. I have been blogging for a while and this is what I have found. (I am not an expert by any means, but most people who claim to be aren't either.)

Here are my tips for pictures...

  • Find good pictures. You are better off to take high quality pics so there is no question about ownership. If you can't do that, find a site that offers royalty free pics.
  • Never use a picture that has a logo across the face of it. Photo companies put that on their pictures so they can identify stolen pics. This will get you in a ton of trouble fast.

Example: logos overlaid on a picture. If you use it, it is stolen!

  • You should always be able to see the top of your first pic from the header. If you have a plain header it should be before your text. If you have a busy header pic put your first picture below the first text section.
  • Place your next pic so you can always see a sliver of a picture. It's the teaser to keep people going down the page. You have to break up the page with a picture, an add, a symbol, anything to keep the eye intrigued.
  • If your theme has it, always set your featured picture. Pick the picture from your article that is most interesting and set it.
  • After you post, go to your site and look at it. Sometimes it looks different. That can be good or bad. Also look at your site on someone elses computer and phone. See what elements you do and dont like. note those and change things accordingly.

It really isn't that difficult to take your own pics these days - I agree. You're better off setting up that nice glass of wine in your own house and snapping some pics with your phone than stealing something that'll get you in trouble! And so often, that "free" stock photo isn't really free anyway.

True enough. There is almost always an upsell. I prefer my own pics. If I cant find what I want I will use what I can find, then replace it with my own as soon as possible.

Me too. It really is so much easier - and I think it's more personal too. People like that.
