6 Great Ways To Write A Terrific Blog Post That People Will Love

Did you know that the average marketer spends, on average, between sixty and ninety minutes crafting a 500-word blog post. That's a lot of time spent on just one shorter-than-average post. Worse still, all that time can simply go to waste if the post fails to attract any traffic, thereby resulting in it failing to be digested by your target audience.

So to help, here are 6 top tips to help you get the most from your writing time so you can create blog posts that your audience will want to read, as well as keep them coming back for more.

1. Avoid direct promotion

Probably the most important, and maybe most vital, rule of running a blog is to avoid the pitfall promoting. Promotion of an affiliated brand, including your own, or the use of paid-for advertising on your blog can have serious consequences with its gravitas within your given niche... or even just generally on the web. Long gone are the days where readers were unaware that publishers were paid for contextual placements online. People are far more savvy these days, and so we need to be far more transparent in the way we conduct our various website activities.

2. Employ visuals

With powerful communication tools like infographics, video clips and photos, a site's content and material can be so much more than just words on a page. Yes, it can take a bit of time to position a set of good visuals within a contextual post, but when done right the return on your time investment can be astronomical.

A good friend of mine recently re-posted a blog that I'd previously published several years ago on one of my own sites. It was all about the various components that go into web optimization and what Google looks at when ranking a website. As posts go, it drove some reasonably good traffic, though was never a game-changer! However, my friend took that post and made it into a really good infographic. This simple but effective infographic post got his site recognised by thousands around the world, and got his name on the digital marketer map.

So remember, visuals can literally make or break your site and truly leverage your content and material.

3. Use examples

OK... In point number 2 did you see what I did? I employed an example. In a blog post your own opinion can be useful and constructive to a reader, but lifestyles experiences and real world examples are invaluable.

Try to reinforce your content through citing real life examples. The use of techniques such as case reviews and quoting experts is going to support your content and set up you, your post and your brand as an authority in your niche.

4. Create content that's your own

Everybody has a different writing style, a style that we all want to share consistently on our sites. But where this can fall foul is where we invite freelancers or guest bloggers to provide new content for our sites. It's not unheard of for webmasters and bloggers to pay experts for relevant content. This may be because they simply don't have the time to write regularly themselves, or possibly because they want to mix up the writing style on their blog.

Whatever their reason, the flip-side to this approach is that it can take away the writing style consistency away from your site.

If you know where to look, there are some great specialist freelancing writers. However, the content they produce is rarely as good as if it had come from the blogger themself - written spontaneously, without delay, and directly from their own head.

In you must employ a third-party writer, then at the least do yourself the favour of spending at least 10-15 minutes personalizing it, adding your own personal flare and reinforcing the values of your brand. These additional little touches will make your content more readable and consistent for your readers.

5. Consider your blog's layout

Blog layout is something that is covered quite extensively here at Wealthy Affiliate. Readers will typically simply skim your content to begin with to ascertain its value to them. Only then will they make the decision to read on or read each point in more detail.

So, in short, a blog needs to have an engaging and consistent layout. This should include:

  • A strong H1 title
  • 4 or 5 engaging sub headings at H2 or H3
  • An engaging introductory opening paragraph - I will often bold mine to make them stand out, and give the reader an initial focus area
  • Inviting imagery - see above
  • Short and concise paragraphs
  • Bullets or pull-quotes ( interesting excerpts from your content pulled into a separate box or white space area) can often break up wordy content
  • A summary with an invitation to interact or a beneficial call-to-action.

6. Find ways to grow your readership

Whenever we start a blog for the first time, your first objective will be to become an authority and grow your readership. So you need to be sure that you've got techniques and initiatives in place to ensure people read and want to return to your blog.

Some of the most successful techniques I've seen used include:

Email e-newsletters - send your latest blog posts out to an email subscription list collated from a subscription link on your blog.

Share your content - Share each and every post you write... and not just as you publish them. Do so every week. This can and should be done via all appropriate social media channels, as well as via website RSS feeds - a tool (often by means of a plugin) that allows readers to receive the latest updates from your site to a reading platform of their choosing - such as emails, phone alerts or a one-stop news syndication site. There are various tools to help you share content socially, many of which will automate the task of sharing at regular intervals. These include Hootsuite, TweetDeck Socialoomph and Social Jukebox.

Web optimization - As an advocate for Wealthy Affiliate you will no doubt be familiar with the merits of page and website optimization. If not, then checkout the certifcation lessons using the green button to the left. In short, we should optimize every post to longtail keyword phrases that are regularly used in search engines, offer high traffic, low competition and good conversion potential. that way, when people search for our target keywords and phrases, they find our content.

Write consistently and often - I know I've banged on and on about this, but consistency is really important. Over time, you are going to grow a following on your blog. So be sure that you write in a way that is familiar to them. Furthermore, keep your readers up-to-date with new material - ideally on a daily basis.

I hope this has given you a few ideas and some food for thought when creating your own blog posts. If you did, then please do LIKE the post below. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them in the comments below and I'll get back to you.

You're welcome, Sean!

Hello Sean, thanks for this great post. I have a question... my H1 titles are actually H2s and the subtitles thereafter are in H3. Does this matter? Should I change the main title to H1?
Thanks! :)

Hi there.
That is fine, as it may be that you have a hierarchy in your titles. It may be that your theme already has the highest level of H1 set up on for the highest title on the page, which is automated. So in that case, your title would go to H2 and sub heads H3, etc, etc. Like I say, as long as there is a hierarchy set up that search engines can identify, then you'll be fine.

Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it.

Kindest regards,

Sean

This is very good blog with some very good advice. The part that interest me the most is getting readership. I learned there are various ways that I can get readership-such as sharing on social media and email newsletter. How does the email newsletter work?

Good stuff. Thank you for your kind words. There are a few plugins available for building email lists. You can then use these lists for sending e-newsletters using tools like MailChimp that then render these is short form, with a link to the full article on your website. Let me know if you need an example plugin. The one I use escapes me as I write :-)
