I followed the tutorial 'Backup Wordpress to DropBox Tutorial' and got the following message when trying to run backup.

I get this error: The HTTP response test get an er

Hello Sandra, as Marion told you, this is one of the plugins that doesn't work here at WA, I've experienced some problems with it. So I decided to go as she told you, using FileZilla.

Thanks. I'm using FileZilla again and it's working.

Hi Sandra,

Some plugins require an outbound connection and they don't work on SiteRubix hosted websites because of security issues. Where did you find the tutorial you mentioned? Which plugin did you use? Did you use a manual backup or automatic backup? I need more information before I can help. Try this as an alternative

Hi Marion,

My site is a .com so that isn't the issue. I tried using BackWPup and I got the message. I also tried the link you gave above but it takes forever and ever to download every file and I still missed some I think. Got me a bit confused. I have changed the plugin to DropBox Backup and Restore and it seemed to do it a lot quicker which concerns me. It says it backs up files and databases so I've put my faith in it as I can't check it I suppose.

Cheers

I was referring to the SiteRubix hosting platform which is for dot coms as well as subdomains. Some plugins require an outbound connection which is not permitted because of security issues. To cover your content use the Tools==> Export feature. The other backups cover everything else such as your images, plugins, themes and settings.

Thanks Marion. I'm going through FileZilla again following your tutorial and it seems to be working.
Cheers.

I tried to find an answer to this but couldn't so I'm asking here. Each of my pages has the title at the top of the page but I don't want it there as I also have a menu. How d

I have a similar issue, my theme is rethink, however to be a bit awkward its only the home page where I want to loose the title, is this possible and if so can anyone tell me how.
Thanks.

I suspect you'd need to do it in the code, I can't see anywhere to do it in the theme options. Try asking in the support forum for your theme. https://wordpress.org/support/theme/rethink

Many thanks Kathy, reassuring it's not just me missing something obvious.

You're welcome let me know how you get on. :)

Kathy. Before putting the comment on here I'd spent hours trying to sort out the problem, I also had a couple of other issues with the theme so I changed it, all problems gone now, the lesson learnt is that some themes can give you more issues than others. Do you think that's a fair point?
Either way you helped me out so again many thanks.

I understand Dan, I've been through so many themes, took me a while to find themes that had the functionality I wanted!

Thanks for this stuff

Do you mean just above the start of the content? If so these are called breadcrumbs and whether you can remove them or not depends on your theme. What theme are you using?

Hi Kathy. My theme is Weaver Xtreme.

Go to theme options > main option > menu bar then scroll down till you see "info bar" (it's quite a long way down), check the option that says hide breadcrumbs, save.
http://screencast.com/t/W2FyIln1w

Kathy, you are a gem. All fixed and the website looks much better now. As it only has a couple of pages with the menu bar right above the content I just didn't see the point of the 'breadcrumbs'.
Thanks again.

Sorry about the late reply too Kathy. I just had to go to bed as it was 12.30am lol.

You're welcome, I've been in bed too!

Hi Kathy, I have the same problem and have just come across your answer. If 'Theme Options' is not one of the choices under Appearance, does that mean it is not available on that Theme. My Theme is Omega. I realise you are probably busy and I hope you do not mind me asking you.

I've done some research and Omega doesn't seem to have breadcrumbs.
You can remove "HOME" from the top of your home page by going to Appearance - Customize, scroll to CSS and add this code

body.home .entry-title {
display: none;
}

Adding this code won't break your site, if you get it wrong it just won't work! Don't forget to save. :)

Thank you for that Kathy, I will try that in the morning. When you are choosing a theme, is it possible to check if any particular theme has bread crumbs for example, or any other attributes, before you load it?
Thank you again, I really appreciate your help.

What I've done is set up a test site using the SiteRubix "Build a New website. I check any themes there first, all the options, plugin conflicts etc. You can also watch Marion's training for choosing a new theme. :)

Great, thanks, that's what I need to do. Much appreciated

You're welcome, and if you need more help just shout! :)

Hi Kathy, it's me again. I'm sorry to impose on you. You helped me with this issue a month ago. I changed my Theme to Weaver Xtreme, which is the same theme as SandraParm refers to. I eagerly turned off Breadcrumbs but the heading is still there. I put it aside, as I had more important work on the site to attend to, However now I have the chance to pursue this issue again I thought I would ask if you have any more thoughts on the matter it would be much appreciated.

Hi Peter, you need to install the extra plugin from the theme makers called Weaver Xtreme Theme Support.

Once installed, when you're editing the page, you'll get extra options below. Check the box that says "hide page title". You need to do this for each page. http://screencast.com/t/pIERHcvbgR

Hope this helps!

Hope this helps, the lady says ! Hi Kathy you are awesome. I was just off to bed when I heard this come in and had to answer straight away. You have made my day and I will sleep like a baby tonight, and follow your instructions in the morning. Big hugs to you, and thank you again.

You're welcome, sleep well!

Hi Kathy, I followed your instructions and it worked well. Thank you again

Great!

Pages automatically go to the top menu by default unless you change it. go to appearance, menus and uncheck the box to automatically add to menu. but then you will have to manually add it to the menu you want. Hope I understood your question

I tried what you said before I put my question here and it didn't work. Kathy hit the nail on the head. Thanks.

I have a website which is just a blog. Should my blog be my static page? or should I have another page as static home page and let people click on blog in the menu to see my po

So I have a similar question, I apologize if this has already been answered but I didn't see it. I have my home page set up where I can see all my posts which is what I want but when you navigate to another page/post and click on Home you get my static page. Do you guys think it should go to my static Home or should it display all my posts?

Hi Rachael!

It's interesting what Martina has written on this just above me, it's a way to solve the problem really good.

In any case, I wanted to give you my personal opinion on the pros and cons of having your home page static or displaying your recent posts.

Having your recent posts is really nice. People arrive and see what type of topics do you cover on your page, and if they like one of your recent posts they go directly to read it straight forward, no time lost.
But there's a problem with that: what if people don't understand what your site is all about by reading your recent posts?

In my opinion is really important to have an static front page, so people can see what your site aims to do, why might be useful for them. You can tell the features, your goals, your main covered topics,....and guess what?? Your recent posts too!! There's normally the option to add a widget somehow to show at the end or middle of that static home page [check http://becreativeanywhere.com].

Though the static page of my site might not be perfect, it has the benefits of both components the static and the dynamic. And if you don't like the carousel (that only shows the name of the post and image), you can always use another widget that shows them as a list with the first couple of paragraphs.
**I personally use the SiteOrigin Widget for this. Also it has other good widgets. https://wordpress.org/plugins/so-widgets-bundle/
**It works nicely with the PageBuilder too. That lets you manage a page or post as blocks rather than plain text:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/siteorigin-panels/

Hope it helps to explain why going for static is normally a good solution.
Don't hesitate to contact me directly for further detail, or for any other reason!!
Cheers, Juan

Thanks Martina and Juan! That makes sense. :)

I believe your home page should be your blog roll not a static page, as your site is a blog. But you can change it anytime you want until you're happy with it. Cheers.

Are you referring to the despitehisfaults site?
I love the concept, heaps of potential for much fun and laughter and maybe some problem solving.
I found myself wondering...what is the point? where is this going. Perhaps your home page could answer those questions...maybe.
Cheers.

Hi Janelle. Yes the site is despitehisfaults.com. At this stage it is just about fun. I'm not really sure whether it has a final point as its really just a vent page. Don't think it will be my money page lol. I'm hoping that my local small business will do better now that it is hosted with WA. I'm waiting to see. I'm adding a blog to that site too so that it has new content being uploaded regularly. I can also link affiliate who sell party stuff etc. I had no training or assistance to get it found on google etc. like I do here at WA so fingers crossed.
Cheers
Sandi

Do you know how many women would want to vent about their partners in a humorous environment? Almost all of them!

My posts are all on my home page and until you decide if you want or when you want pages, I would not worry about it.

Thanks. I'll go with that.

At the beginning I would go with a blog roll for the homepage.
Maybe later you can organize the page differently, if you want.

Many folks have q blog roll on their home page. I do also. Thus is where I put all my posts.

All my other pages are static .
