Is it necessary to continue to submit sitemaps after every post or every now and then? If not, can I delete the google xml sitemaps plugin?
You don't have to do it that often. I've been doing it as I feel. I am going to schedule this monthly though.

I've not started fetching posts yet and I need to Loes.
As for the sitemap, I had some 404 errors for pages I created that I'd thought I'd use (when I was new) and later found I wouldn't use them. I sent a new sitemap to let Google know what I know is correct on my site.
This fixed some of the errors but not all. I guess the real question would be is a submitted sitemap static, as in you do it once and done or is it dynamic and it updates as your site matures.
I found the latter not to be true so I have provided updated site maps as I felt I should ... but I should more often, hence my monthly plan.
Please note, Loes, that I am still very new and not 100% certain on this. I can say however that Google seemed to like it in Webmaster tools and so far it has not hurt anything.

Hey Rick
The sitemap submission isn't necessary, unless you want Google to index your new additions quickly. The spiders do crawl the sites periodically and it WILL ultimately get indexed.
Cheers

Hi
Another thing is this.. you can actually check which pages of your site are indexed. Just go to the Google search box and type : "site: www.yoursite.com".
I use that to eyeball if there are any errors when using Google.
I trust this helps.

Will cloaking an affiliate link by shortening it to bit.ly ruin the affiliate link? Or will it track all the same?
You can use URL shortner's.. I think most people use Pretty Link.. which is a plugin you can install
*Edit* Lol jvr beat me by a hair in answering.. grrr ;)

And how do I stop these evil pingbacks from showing up in my comments section on my site? I have already gone to my Discussion settings and unchecked "Allow link notifications
Hi RickSB. How are you doing? I see you had a problem with Trackbacks and Pingback on your Wordpress site.
Don't know if you got it corrected or not, but i've been having the same problem and i found a solution that works. It will work for you too.
You'll find it here; How to stop spam comments on Wordpress
Didn't fix it Shawn. That's the frustration of it. I don't know any other settings that would deal with it.
Hmm, have you tried to send in a ticket on it and ask the techs why you are getting these?
I found this on the net, maybe it will help
https://en.support.wordpress.com/comments/pingbacks/
Scroll down to the disable pingbacks part
Good luck and please post back here when you fins the solution so we all get the heads up :)
What you did should take care of it. Personally, they don't bother me and I just delete them
