Why We Need To Upgrade Our Operating System From Time To Time

Not Your Computer's OS - Your Own!

In the struggle to lead an abundant life you can sometimes reach crisis point. In a worst case scenario, this can lead to breakdown and becoming what Society sees as another mental health statistic. Talking pills and receiving counseling are typically the 'help' that is on offer from 'The System', but at the heart of it all is the need to gain an understanding of how your mind works.

Living In The Void

You and I, like 95 % people, live or have lived in that place I call the Void. You're neither poor nor rich. You are surviving but not thriving. 'Too much month at the end of the money' and all that. The dreams of childhood and the idealism of youth have given way to 'conformity' to societal stereotypes. Study hard, get a job, work hard, get paid, retire.

You Were Born To Do More Than Simply Work, Pay The Bills And Die!

Or were you? We are all supposed to be in charge of our own destiny. And indeed we are, but have you given that control over to someone else without even realizing it?

It can also be said that from the moment you were born, your life and destiny were already mapped out in front of you.

The reason for this is that your SUBCONSCIOUS MIND is always listing to what is going on around you and it is being programmed by our environment without you even knowing it, by the 'Flock' - parents, teachers, friends, all those people who taught to conform to the 'rules' just as they learned to do so from their environment.

The Conscious vs The Sub-Conscious Mind

When you were young, you used to dream. The little boy straddling the broomstick was gallantly riding a stallion into battle, the little girl dressing her dolls was rehearsing her wedding to the handsome Prince. Yes, very 'gender stereotypical' in this day and age, I know, but I'm fifty-something! This was your sub-conscious mind at work. Dreaming, creating.

Then as we got older and 'wiser' there was no more time for dreaming. Our conscious mind took over as we were told we needed to 'fit-in' and survive by doing following the path that society and 'the system' expect of us.

Nobody wants to be rejected, and so you 'fit in'. Happiness is then simply a bonus.

It is when your environment changes that the problems can start. You start to write new 'programmes' as you transition into adulthood and your logical (conscious) mind starts to take over from your creative (sub-conscious) mind. You start to 'feel' less and 'think' more.

If you think of your brain as a computer, up to the age of 9 or 10 years, you are building your OS with the basic programmes you need for day to day survival - walking, talking, eating, drinking, developing your inter-actional skills, etc.

Moving forward into adulthood, the changes you go through place you into a new environment. If it's not where you want to be, or if the changes are too extreme, the fact that your conscious and sub-conscious minds are now so removed from each other can create conflict within you and cause problems such as lack of self-worth, anger, depression, etc.

You are now trying to install the latest software on an outdated OS and when this is done on a computer, it starts to slow down and eventually stops. So an upgrade is then needed.

When people are experiencing not 'feeling' enough, they become anxious, confused and depressed. All these things are driven by feelings, not logic! They reside in that OS which is the sub-conscious mind and they conflict with the programmes which are running in the logical conscious mind. The programmes have become incompatible with the OS.

We only live at most 5% in our logical conscious minds. The other 95% of the time, we live in our subconscious minds, and when operating with a bad OS, will logic or emotion win?

It's a sad fact that the help available within the 'System' is more geared around fixing the programmes that are running, rather than the Operating System itself.

I battled with depression and anger issues for over 30 years. They started in my late childhood and early teens. As I was pushed down a certain route in life by those I looked up to, I felt like a fish out of water in my environment for years, which only made the problem worse.

The same sort of thing may have happened to you.

If you aren't where you want to be, give some serious thought to some change. Decide what you want to be, do and have, and find the courage to make that change even if it means some short-term upheaval.

A Little Self-help Gem I Found

I've blogged before about a couple of amazing personal-development books called 'The Language Of Letting Go' and 'More Language Of Letting Go' by Meldody Beattie.

You can read the blog post here.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/richbrennan/blog/book-reccom...

I'm currently reading another excellent book called 'Creative Visualization' by Shakti Gawain.

These books have helped me enormously to come to terms with my past, clarify what I want in my future, but most importantly of all, to accept my present for what it is and be thankful for the all too easy to overlook joys in my life now.

When you learn to do this, it won't transform you to that magical place straight away, but it will help you feel better in the present and enjoy the journey you have already embarked upon by joining Wealthy Affiliate.

Have a great WA day folk. Onwards and upwards!

Cheers

Good Morning Rich,

Lovely post. The modern human puts too much strain on his or her brain. Our environment and the way we eat is not good and will affect our overall health including our brain. I think that nowadays it is very difficult to be balanced spiritually, mentally, and physically.
May I make a little suggestion? 3 big spoons of coconut oil a day helps as coconut oil is fuel for the brain.
The saying says: you are what you eat that is true but just as true is the saying you are what you think.
I just wrote my monthly WA post, you might find it helpful. Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

Thanks, Taetske. I'll add that to the tablespoon of cider apple vinegar (a brilliant natural anti-histamine), extra virgin olive oil and the big dollop of local honey I take every day. Every little bit helps, as they say!
Cheers

Good evening Rich,

Now that is what I call a healthy cocktail.

All the best, Taetske

Hi, Rich.

"It's a sad fact that the help available within the 'System' is more geared around fixing the programmes that are running, rather than the Operating System itself."

You have written one of the best posts I have read here in quite a long time. Thank you for taking the time to first write it and then, unselfishly share it with us.

You continue to write many good posts here, Rich.
I'm not sure of what Niche you are in, but I would love to support it in any positive way that I can.

I know and understand why we don't all publish our sites here under follow me but I think that once we have crossed that barrier of 'potential embarrassment,' we will, because then we can piggy back off each other.

You are definitely on the right track.

Thanking you in advance.

Paul.

I'm 'Bootcamping' at the moment, Paul, promoting Wealthy Affiliate. I've got other niches in mind for the future but I've learned the hard way to FOCUS (Follow One Course Until Successful) and build out one at a time.
I haven't round to putting my site on my profile as yet, but it's on my 'to do' list.
Likewise I'll be most happy to support you by commenting, feeding back, etc. The wonderful Community we have here at Wealthy Affiliate is so much more than just the sum of it's parts. We're all in it together as they say.
Thank you for you very kind words about the post too, which is very much appreciated.
Cheers

Thought for sure this was going to be about my computer, but no, it's about my inner computer! I got Shakti Gawain's book when it first came out and it has shaped my thinking ever since. Also was fortunate to take a weekend workshop from her around that time (the 70s or so) and that helped the ideas sink in.

You're very fortunate to have gone to one of her seminars, Rosana. I think she's one of the all time greats of personal development. It's a subject very close to my heart.

This is a good reminder to include her in my memoirs..think it will fit nicely into a chapter about my studying hypnotherapy with Freda Morris. She wrote a book around then called "Hypnosis with Friends and Lovers."

This was such a beautiful post, Rich:). Definitely something I needed to read today. Thank you!
Blessings:)
Suzi

Thanks, Suzi. I'm glad you got some value from it. We all have 'those' days from time to time and there's always something out there to sweeten the pill a bit.

Hi Richard.

I find that Life can be depended upon to deliver a short, sharp kick to the ouchies, whenever I (seriously) slack off. It's doing that to me right now. (eyes roll)

Come hell or high water, if you want to get along with the Big Cheese's plans, you just have to pull out the ol' finger and go with the flow.

I think.

Regards,

Absolutely right, Tayo. Life tells us what we need to hear when we need to hear it. The key is not just to hear, but to listen and do.

Hi Rich. Thanks a lot for this. You are absolutely right with what you say. Most people today are brainwashed into believing the way they are supposed to live their lives - go to school, go to college/uni, get a job until your in your 60's or 70's, then retire and live the remainder of your life wondering what to do and if you'll have enough money to do it.

There has to be more to life than that surely?

I've worked in the finance machine for about 20 years now and to be honest it has been ok. Some good times, some bad times but mostly in between. It wasn't until the second half of last year when I had started a new role within the same company that I realised I had made a big mistake. Not going into detail but I ended up probably the most stressed, worried and anxious I have ever been in my life. I desparately needed a way out of the job. I am an eternally positive person but I was tested to my limits!

That was when I stumbled across a Youtube advert (yes, I can see you a smiling. Youtube adverts do work!). It was for a company called Mindvalley.. Now, I'm not trying to sell them or anything, but when I started listening to what they were saying (similar to what you say above) that my whole perspective on life changed. It's what ultimately brought me here to WA.

To change your perspective is very difficult, but when you do it is an extremely liberating experience and gives you an energy and purpose to change things in your life.

Life is good now and going to get better!

Sorry for the long rant :-)

Have a great day!

No need to say sorry, Chris, and it wasn't a rant. What you say is true for 95% of people, including me at one time. I actually realized early on that there had to be a better way but it took me along time to get up and go looking for it!
Cheers
