Hi WA Community,
I would like to explore whether we are allowed to add child themes for our websites here in WA?
I am exploring adding a code that I found online
you don't need to create a child theme you can use a plugin called code editor which will add the code to the right place ...
you can use a child theme creator plugin to create a child theme without issue here....and then delete the plugin after use ....
I found this code on a YouTube video that adds the reading time. But it is adding to a child theme.
with the wpcode or headers and footers plugin you don't need to add it to the functions.php file
if you add it then you do need to make a child theme as changes will be wiped out when you update the theme for compatibility or security...
with a child theme the code you add is kept on top of the updated files...
or add it via the code plugin and if you decide to change your theme in the future then you don't need to remember what you added....
i have 49 plugins active and am achieving 95% google pagespeed score- ok no images curently but ultrafast loading....
so well coded plugins are ok and unloading what is not used....

I previously asked you if you have WP Code installed. If you have you can use that easily. No need for a child theme.

Hi Richard, yeah, it worked, but also just saw your other comment there is a way to do it without shortcode and CSS. :)

Dear WA community,
I would like to add an Estimated Reading Time for my blogs and would like to ask if anyone has an easy guide on how I may do so.
Thank you so
if i could recommend 'worth the read' plugin - i know it is another plugin....
i have seen a reading time block bundled within block extension plugins but cannot find it at the moment...
but the above plugin does appear to work well- smooth scrolling across the top and not intrusive....
i hope you find the solution you want...
Hi Richard,
For some WordPress themes, this functionality is by default incorporated.
Best,
Maria
Hi Mariab, thank you for chipping in!
I'm using the GeneratePress theme, so unfortunately, I think this functionality is not incorporated, unless they have recently added it in somehow.
Hi Richard
I used a plugin called Read Meter - Reading Time & Progress Bar for WordPress.
This displays the reading time for a particular post.
Version 1.0.10 | By Brainstorm Force
Wishing you well
Andre
Hi Andre,
Ya... I'm trying to see if I can avoid activating my 26th plugin... :P
But I'm not good at coding PHP functions (if I got that right) or playing with a child theme without investing time on learning it, so exploring if anyone can give me some options to consider.
Perhaps someone here can know of a CSS code to add or something like that. Perhaps you could ask Feigner (phil) he is good with that.
Hi Michael,
Are you saying Microsoft Clarity can add reading time into our blog post on our website?
Thank you for chipping in, Eric!
I've tried googling for a no-plugin solution (I have 25 activated, so hoping not to add more if I can help it), but the answers I've got online seem hard for me to follow.
Hence, I'm trying my luck to see if anyone in the WA community may have done it and happen to have a step by step guide somewhere.
Will you do one video tutorial on it, please? :)))

If you already have 25 plugins then having 26 won’t hurt a thing. You can also eliminate any plugins you’re not needing. The plugin route is by far the simplest route as opposed to trying to add code you’re not familiar with to the back end.

Hi fellow WA members,
I would like to seek experience from you if you have wordpress websites hosted elsewhere.

Hi Richard,
I recommend opening a support ticket to discuss the issue with them directly.
All the best,
Boris
I think I done that some time ago and the response was along the line that it is working fine.
I may still try to do that one more time.
You mentioned that the backend of WordPress is slow—what about the actual website’s speed? If the website’s speed is normal, I suggest clearing your web browser’s cache or trying a different browser to see if that resolves the issue.
Actual website loading is looking fine. It is always the backend that is slow or become non-responsive where I can't save. I had to close the browser tab and then login again to continue my work.
Tried different browsers and they are the same.
I am on PC.
I gather your wordpress dashboard works perfectly fine that it works relatively fast and you don't have issues like what I described?
I am just amazed at how smooth the wordpress website that I am working on with another hosting company is. I don't recall I felt that way while working on my websites here at WA... hoping to have the same feel somehow. It really helps in productivity
I understand your point. Personally, I haven’t experienced any issues with the WordPress backend on my WA-hosted websites. Therefore, I’ll stick with my initial suggestion to submit a support ticket.
