How Fast Is Your WordPress Dashboard? Help!

How fast is your WordPress dashboard? How long does it take to open a new page or new post?

For me, working on my website here for the past few years, the norm has been about 25 seconds to open a new page or new post and around 10 seconds to wait for saving a change.

And then, whenever I made changes for 4-6 times, saving no longer works where the top right corner doesn't show the "Saved" status. I had to close all my working tabs relating to my website and then relogin again via Site Manager.

The waiting time above and the constant need to relogin has been terribly frustrating.

I thought it is a norm for WordPress until I had a chance to try designing a website elsewhere with another hosting company.

There, loading a new page or post just take me 3 seconds, saving 2-3 seconds and no issue with refreshing the page I'm working on to see the changes.

Productivity has been excellent over there.

Realising this, I raised a ticket with Site Support to seek help to see why is it so slow here at Wealthy Affiliate hosting.

I'm still working with them on it but it seems there is little that can be done.

What Has Been Done So Far?

What has been suggested to me and I followed are:

  1. Try different browser
  2. Clearing browser cookies, cache, or temporary internet files and flush the DNS cache.
  3. Deleting unused plugins. I deleted 6 plugins (1 deactivated and deleted, remaining 5 was already not active and I deleted them

None of the above work to improve the speed at the backend. (Note: I'm not talking about PageSpeed, just WordPress Dashboard performance)

My website was also checked to be on PHP8 server.

So the verdict so far from Site Support is that there is no issue on the server end.

I'm told that I have too many plugins which I have 21 plugins installed but all in use.

In the other website that I'm working on which is so much faster, I have 15 plugins, and they are very similar.

I don't really buy in that the "many" plugins really matter that much - 25 seconds vs 3 seconds.

Getting Information from Site Support

I tried to enquire with Site Support the following but I'm not able to get an answer:

  1. How many seconds does it take from your end to load a new page? (So that we can compare)
  2. Could it be because I am based in Asia and the server is in Canada? (I'm not savvy on server but I can guess is it because of the distance causing the lag. At least let me know, even if it is a dumb question?)

Instead of answering my questions, I was asked to do something else. I really don't know why.

Seeking Help from the Community

Can I reach out to all of you reading this to share with me:

  1. How long does it take for you to load a new page or post and where are you located?
  2. And do you experience any issues with saving your work where it hangs after a while?
  3. Do you have any other solutions for me to troubleshoot so that the performance of my WordPress Dashboard can run faster?

I'd really appreciate to hear from all of you.

Help.

Thank you.

Regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,

All of my sites load within fractions of a second. Perhaps because I seem to live in a different time frame, awake when most others are asleep!

I don’t experience any issues with the WordPress dashboard itself. However, as Teri mentioned, my work is often interrupted by save slowdowns, so this is indeed a recurring issue. I’ve also noticed slowdowns during peak times, which I assume could be related to server load or bandwidth constraints.

What always helps is clearing the cache 😝 and refreshing the site. I do wish this process were automated, much like updates and upgrades. A fair bit of time gets consumed with manual maintenance tasks.

Thank you for bringing this up!

P.S. 1: Yes, plugins and themes can definitely be troublemakers!

Hi Fleeky, this is the other richard here... I used to be frustrated by the automatic WordPress saves, so I turned them off. I'm so used to manual saving that that works OK for me.
;-)
Richard

Yes... unless you have many sites, then it becomes a roller coaster... 🎢 Even set on, i have to run manually or ask ssupport

Hi Richard. Yes, I have the same issues you are having.

I am on Starlink, too. It used to be fast when we first got it a couple of years ago, but now it has slowed down as more people use it.

I live way out in the country, so I've always had issues with the internet. So much so that I quit offering website design when we moved out here in 2008.

But when we got Starlink, I was so happy with its speed that I started another website for myself and joined WA.

Alas, as Starlink grew in popularity, we started getting throttled in the late afternoon/evening. By this time, I finally got so tired of reloading my site and pulling my hair out cuz stuff didn't Save, so I had to try to remember what I made changes to/added.

I didn't realize that other people were having the same issues I was having with the Save button and then having to reload your site.

To try not to lose my work, I try to remember to save more often, but it takes so long that I almost go to sleep each time, lol. I also can't scroll down the screen or switch tabs to do something else, or it will cause the save to lock, and then I've lost all my work.

I sure wish I could get this fixed, as I'm not a morning person for health reasons. I need to work in the afternoon ... bummer.

Let me know if you get a fix!

Thanks,

Teri

Hi Teri!

Thanks for sharing that you have the same issue as me. :(

Yes, I lost hair too. Wasted lots of time waiting.

Hope to get this fix indeed!

Thanks.

Richard

I was just thinking about getting starlink, but after reading this I may not.
I am paying for the fasted internet I can get and update my modem yearly and it’s ok..ish.
Ahhh Vietnam

lol

Steve

I use Starlink which runs at 50 - 150 Mbps. My response is in seconds on anything with my Wordpress dashboards.

Try running a speed test on your system at speedtest.net and see what your WiFi speed is running at. If it's 1-5 Mbps that could be a possibility.

download is 30.58. upload is 8.51

it used to be in the 50s

Download looks good, upload is okay but that may be why you are seeing saves taking longer

Hi Howard,

My WIFI speed is running at 43.62 download, 75.38 upload. Pretty decent I suppose.

Today I have 37.54 & 22.40

Is your WP dashboard performing better at that speed?

Hi Richard,

I’m sorry to hear about all the troubles you’re experiencing.

For me, my WordPress backend works fine when I’m in Europe, but it becomes noticeably slow when I’m in Dubai. So, it might be related to your location as well.

To overcome this issue, I use a virtual PC in the US through Contabo while I’m in Dubai, and it’s significantly faster.

Wishing you the best,
Boris

I think my hunch is valid... location matters. I am in Asia so it could have made the difference.

Thank you so much for sharing about the virtual PC and about Contabo. I have been thinking about having a windows desktop that I don't need to log off as I have some processes that needed to run. Not so familiar with the virtual PC though, only just know it exist.

Richard, don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need any help with Contabo.
Cheers, Boris

Thank you Boris!

opening a post was 10 seconds - about normal....
saving a post was 5 seconds - a bit quicker than normal...

i had just cleared my standby list in my computer memory....
i use rammap to clear the standby memory - this is a free application - use with care...

i found that my browser was leaking memory ( not closing off properly ) by looking at resource monitor ( memory) ( ctrl+alt+delete - open task manager - then click on performance and down the bottom is a link to open resource monitor...)
it maybe your machine - shouldn't be as you are working online..

Hi Phil, I was testing a brand new siterubix site from my end and opening a post for a fresh website is already 10 seconds. So it may suggest a part of the reason could be my location.

With regards to browser, I am using the same browser working on another wordpress website that is hosted with another hosting company, but there, opening a post is 3 seconds while my wordpress website here is opening at 25 seconds. Maybe it is not a browser or my machine problem?

it maybe the response time of the wa servers - not the fastest out there and you are on shared hosting - so no idea of the loading on the servers....
just done a pingdom test and from asia wa home page tool 1.87 secs to load whereas from north america it took 0.86 secs....so there is a lot of difference...
maybe worth trying to see what that site says about your backend....
https://tools.pingdom.com/

do you know about epic privacy brower - built in encrypted proxy...you can be anywhere in the world...

Thanks Phil, my pingdom test shows:
Asia Tokyo - 3.62s
North America - San Francisco - 1.56s

Thanks, I should try Epic browser and see if it helps improve the timing..

Hi Phil, how does the epic privacy browser works so that we "can be anywhere in the world"? I have installed the browser but not sure if I need to install some extension?

I found the extension Epic Encrypted Proxy (VPN for the Browser).

Switching around different countries didn't help improve the performance though... still around 25 seconds.

it was worth a try...
i hope you get it resolved soon, i can see it is frustrating you...
