How Much Money Per Hour To Write?!?!

Last Update: September 10, 2018

It's easy to get caught up in the "does it work?" question.

Does affiliate marketing really work?

As a new online business owner, regardless of how long you've been a member here at Wealthy Affiliate, if you haven't made any money with your website yet, it can seem like the whole thing is a sham.

At the very least, it can seem like YOU will never see success with affiliate marketing.

It can be frustrating, demoralizing, and make you want to quit. I've been there!

Making money online is not limited to affiliate websites

I've written about this before, in my post titled How Much Are Your Online Business Skills Worth? but I had a shocking reminder today of how much money you can make online even if your affiliate affiliate site bombs and you never make a dime with affiliate commissions (which is highly unlikely if you follow the training at WA).

What's the story?

So I placed a job on UpWork for an email copywriter. I needed a 5-email sequence written for me for a series of products I want to promote.

I don't fully understand the mechanics of the products, so I want a professional writer, who has experience in the industry (or has the time to research it) to write the sequence for me.

Here are the five applicants after one day:

Notice that they are bidding $50 - $150 per hour to WRITE EMAILS.

Can you write an email?

Do you know how email marketing works? (webinar)

Can you write emails that convert? (webinar)

If you're paying attention at WA, YES YOU CAN.

That means you have the potential to earn $50-$150 per hour writing emails online.

More Than Just Writing Emails

There's so much more that you are learning here in WA that will allow you to contribute to the online business world in a meaningful way.

  • you can build a WordPress website
  • you can install custom plugins and themes
  • you can manage hosting (you've got 25 spots on your WA account)
  • you can install SSL certificates and speed-optimize websites
  • you can write SEO optimized articles
  • you can do SEO audits
  • you can research low competition keywords
  • you can develop a 12-month affiliate site business plan

What else can you think of that could be a marketable skill?

At the end of the day, the stuff you're learning inside Wealthy Affiliate has real-world applications that people will pay good money for.

Like any business, skill, or hobby, it's going to take time and practice to get good at it. The good news is that you can learn and practice these skills at home, sitting at a computer, any time of the day you want.

You don't need to go to a training center 30 minutes away. You don't have to pay $800 per semester for a single glass and listen to a teacher for 90 minutes. You can start or stop any time you want. You even have fellow classmates and experts to consult for advice.

The price of a WA yearly membership is $359. Let's say you master copywriting, and start charging $100 per hour to write sales copy. That means you only have to work four hours to turn a profit from what you learn here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Of course, I still prefer affiliate sales because it's much more passive, but the option to do freelance work out there.

I do not have any higher education Fe! I write very basic articles, as described here: You can improve your writing through practice. Here are three immediate things you can do.

#1. Turn off caps lock
#2. Write sentences full sentences that are not run-on, stream of conscious writing
#3. Use paragraphs

Thank you sooo very much for this information and motivational. I've just started and was a little concerned on how to use the skills that I would learn here at WA to earn money on the internet while I await my earnings from affiliate marketing.

I've been to UPWORK and I've seen their freelance platform. This is a great way to market the skills that I acquire from WA.

Thanks again

I am benefiting a lot from the income the skills I have learned here gives. I for example regularly do local SEO work as a freelancer for a local agency. I make twice the yearly WA membership costs in a day - the skills are definitely useful for many purposes, and extremely good value for money with the training and tools here.

Hi Greg,

Yes you can use the skills you learn in the OEC to do local SEO. Many of the things are the same. Jay also at some point did a whole series of live classes about local SEO - you can use the search function to find these trainings that has a lot of great advice.

How long it takes really depends. Often local clients do not have such a big budget, so they often do not want you to work so much, so therefore it can take a while. But it depends on the competition in the particular business. But in general I always try to make it clear that SEO is not a quick fix but something they should be willing to invest in continuously and often not see much results until after around 6 months. But again it all depends.

I do not target any specific businesses. I do the work for an online marketing agency, so they do all the selling and find the clients, and then I do the SEO work. I prefer it this way, but several people here at WA has used the skills to build a SEO agency and go out and sell their services, so it is definitely possible.

I also optimize their current content, and do some technical SEO. For example making sure the get SSL and make it work properly. I also sometimes look at how they can use it in relationship to social media.

And then I sometimes teach SEO courses and WP courses etc.

I am not using link building at the moment no. It can help to a certain degree, but it is not necessary, and there are a lot of unethical and risky practices when it comes to link building. But if you can get them naturally and through outreach, it can help.

the rate really depends on your experience and where you live. I live in Denmark, so here you can charge quite a lot, as the cost of living is quite high here.

So try to look at what local SEO people in your area charges to get an idea.

Excellent example. Just one client a month can pay for a year of WA membership, which keeps you in contact with other successful entrepreneurs and expands your horizons.

Success on top of success snowballs.

I use WA and my site to improve my writing skills. I am on Fiverr as a content writer and have about 400 pos. feedbacks and over 1000 completed orders. I charge 10.00 for 500 words and can knock that out in a half hour. I keep my rates down so I.can stay on top.

Fiverr is a great way to start and practice your chops. I'm sure a lot of clients are pleasantly surprised to have a proficient web content writer for such a good price!

Honestly, I think just practice makes perfect. Fiverr helped me by using feed backs to change my writing.

I started studying up on sentence structure, writing conversationally and making sure I used spell check. It's not rocket science, people just want articles that read well and engage the reader.

The key is to get some gigs and get seen. Feedbacks will help people trust you. Once you have a good amount the gigs will come more frequently.

I like your thinking Nathaniel. It's about looking beyond just the obvious, understanding the true value of a WA education and being open to pursuing opportunities that are there for the taking. In short it's about allowing ourselves to be the best versions of ourselves. Yes, smart thinking sir! Thanks for the reminder.

Interesting topic Nathaniell.. for a time I was a full time Instructional designer and technical writer and was paid hourly rates around those you listed.

As someone new to this space one of my areas of note was to see if my writing skills can easily translate to copy and website writing.. Never thought about outsourcing my skills.. But i guess time will tell if I have any to outsource :-)

As a technical writer, you should get on UpWork.com and fish for some high paying jobs. They are out there and you could be funding your affiliate site with side gigs freelancing.

Yeah, have looked into that in the past - We also run two Pilates and Yoga studios so that keeps me busy.. thanks for the note though - will check it out

This is great advice. So many people are stuck on the idea that all one has to do is put up a 6-page website, pile n some affiliate links, and the money will flow n. It often doesn't work that way.

Also, many folks who have worked at jobs for many years are not always happy with the idea of entrepreneurship. Online writing work can be a real path to success.

There are many types of entrepreneurs! Even something as simple as building WordPress websites or writing emails can be turned into a full time income with the right person behind the wheel.

Diversity and flexibility two import aspects of any successful entrepreneur, the more you become of each increases your odds of success through multiple streams of income.

I am sure if we would sit down and do some serious brain storming we could create a list twice that size. Thanks, Nathaniel there's nothing like a giant kick start.

Great post!

My affiliate income is slowly climbing, but in the meantime, I've been hired more than once with good pay using my Wealthy Affiliate skills, so I know you're right.

Awesome! It's good to have a backup plan in case affiliate earnings are unstable or go through a downturn. There's always work available online.

Good points, I had recently started thinking along the same lines when I stopped writing for a few minures to consider everything I’ve learned here during the last 5 months.
It’s like a whole other world opening up!!!

Writing is super valuable. If I pay $100 for an article and it makes me $10/month, I get 100% ROI in 10 months and pure profit after that. Sounds like a good business model to me!
