What is Shiny Object Syndrome and How to Avoid it

I’m sure most of you’ve seen magpies around where you live at some point in your lives and have heard that they supposedly love to collect/steal shiny objects.

Apparently this is just based on European folklore and has no scientific basis which was news to me when I read an article about it recently.

Anyway, I won’t get bogged down in that. What I really mean to convey in this post about what is “shiny object syndrome” and how to avoid it is in fact the spell that we can all fall under if we’re not careful!

The spell is what other legitimate and scam business tout, usually online, where they promise big things to reel you in. These, at best, overwhelm and confuse you so that you either end up going back to square one and wasting your time and energy, or at worst being a scam or very short of what originally promised, and you lose money.

I have been moving house recently, so not had a huge amount of time to devote properly to any one thing, and have had the odd moment here and there to look at different schemes and techniques that seem to pop up every minute.

This has only served to confuse, overwhelm and frustrate me, to the point where I almost gave up in everything I have built up so far.

My advice to anyone finding themselves in the same boat - HMS Shiny Object Syndrome - is to take another moment to think before you take any action in going down a different avenue or purchasing yet another scheme.

Yes, it may seem like a better solution for you at the time, but to change direction also means starting from the beginning again, and losing time. This obviously depends on whether what you’re currently doing isn’t suited to you and you just can’t go any further, or you’re just tired of waiting for results. This is quite different. Everything takes hard work and patience. All programs I’ve looked at that are legitimate as far as I can tell, require these two things.

Good luck!

Thank you Michelle

Yes indeed many "opportunities" offered to secure one's interest & the HMS shiny boat syndrome. There are always those whom want to offer the world to you with ideas of huge fortunes to be made & with little work required. I searched, & have been guilty of, falling for these schemes, offered by many without any consideration whether you survive or fail.

It is such a relief to find WA - with an honest & wonderful family environment. I am not going anywhere!!

Denis

Hello Denis

Yes it’s such a shame that these exist when all we want to do is get on and improve ourselves. Separating the good from the bad is difficult!

Glad we found WA!

All the best

Michelle 😊

I have been there and done that and have learned my lesson. Thanks for reminding me so I can keep focused. All the best.

Thanks for the comment - yes it can happen to anyone and multiple times!

Best wishes

Michelle 😊

We thought of Glen, who commented below, as soon as we read this because he has written about just this and lived it! Wise words from both of you. We must not be seduced by the Dark (Shiny) Side!
Colette and Philip

Very true - it’s so hard to keep away from them when you don’t see any instant results from what you’re already doing.

Best wishes

Michelle 😊

Hard wOrk and patience resumes it quite well
And sticking to the teachings, not look at others...

Definitely - it’s easy to get distracted.

Very good point to stick to the training - it will keep you on track!

Take care

Michelle 😊

Well said Michelle.
As a human being we always see the other part is greener and we tend to get influenced to move to the new land; only to find that it's even worse. And we move again and again. In the process, we are losing out our self-trust and energy.

We need to keep believing in what we are doing is going to work. If it doesn't, change the strategy and change the pattern of your life to see a better results.

Joe

Yes good point Joe, to give the strategy you’re on some time and if it is not working after that specified time then change tactics.

Best regards

Michelle 😊

Many people get sucked into it. People want instant results without patience and hard work, that is why many fall into these get rich quick scams.

You’ve hit the nail on the head! Exactly.

All the best,

Michelle 😊

Great Post Michelle,

I could write a book on this topic. Here is one big clue to know when you have been lured by bait.

THEY NEVER TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GETTING!

The tell you all the great things that get your emotions all wrapped up the give you lines that spark your curiosity and you keep clicking because you want to know the answer but it is never given.

The only way to get the answer is to buy the product.

If they don't give you the answer you are about to be caught!

HOOK LINE AND SINKER!

Avoid it like the plague. It will make you broke, confused, frustrated, and leave you right back where you started. Only with less money.

We know that you know all about this and we have read and imprinted on our brains what you have written about this subject. So glad you are here, Glen.

Aaah I see Glen! I shall go and read your post about it too. It’s frustrating to say the least and when you’re losing money and getting nowhere then that is just the pits.

Glad to see you are also in the know about how not to get caught out!

Thanks for commenting! Take care

Michelle 😊

My Pleasure Michelle..
