I've been seeing this question asked many times -

What's The Difference Between A Post, A Page And A Blog?

So I thought I would answer this popular question.

A Post:

A post is an entry on your site listed in reverse chronological order. This is the fresh content you create for your site.

Posts can be found the Archives, Categories, Recent Posts, and other widgets on your site. Posts are also listed in the RSS feed of your site.

If you create what is called a Sticky Post(s) they will appear before all your posts.

You can control the number of posts that appear on your site by going to Settings - Reading in your dashboard.

You can have as many posts as you want there is no limit.

Pages:

Pages are static and they are not listed by date. And pages do not use Tags or Categories.

Pages (the link) can be displayed in the sidebar using a widget or placed in your themes menu.

You can change the order of your pages if you like.

Simply hover over the page title you want to change in your dashboard, click on Quick Edit - you will see where you can change the order. 0 being first and 1 being next and so on.

You can have as many pages as you want there is no limit.

A Blog

This is where many people get some terminology confused.

The real definition of a blog - is a personal website. They started out as online diaries really. People posted their thoughts and opinions.

And when you think about it not much has changed with blogs today - it's just now they have evolved into much more than online diaries - they are now used for online business.

And since most websites are based on the wordpress platform - a website is now more often than not referred to as a blog. And vice versa.

So when someone says Blog chances are they are talking about a website.

And here is where it can get confusing - someone may say "I have an Ecommerce Site" - well that's just fancy talk for a website - and it may even be a website using a ecommerce wordpress theme.

Hope this helps

I beleive in you!

I was sorta kinda confused on this at the beginning, Leo. Kyle helped me out with it and I thank you for putting it so succinctly. I'm going to bookmark this for when I see people answering the question again. Your rock, my friend!

Thanks

I use posts for all my laptop reviews and I have two pages set up as blogs, works well I think. I just start at the top of the blog page every time I add more content. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Leo, very helpful.

You're welcome

Simple explanation nice!

Thanks

I'm getting to be too long here at WA. Good post, but we should install a newby section for blogs.

There is a classroom called Everything WordPress - which in essence is about blogging

I don't understand your reply. If everybody is only writing for newbies, why should I stay here was my question or could we mark our blogs for newbies orbreal information for more experienced IM.

Sorry I mis-understood your comment.

Not everyone is writing for newbies here in the WA. People write for the experienced IMer as well.

But no there is no one spot for newbie blog posts or more experienced post information.

However you could mark a post for newbies by simply adding that to the title or the first part of the post.

From what I see the structure of the WA is such that building an online business for most people joining here is new to them. This is why there is such an open forum.

And weather you stay or not well that of course is up to you.

of course, it helps as always.

You're welcome
