Why affiliate marketing is risky

Today, everything came to a grinding halt when we had an unplanned for power outage. I was halfway through a drafting a lengthy email when it happened, and I'm yet to get on my laptop again to try and salvage my work from the saved drafts folder.

"Northeasterly gales, gusting 130 km/h or more in exposed places, turning northwest around midday today (Thursday), then turning southwest this afternoon and gradually easing this evening."

It just showed why affiliate marketing is just as risky as other 'bricks and mortar' businesses... especially when external factors outside your control occur.

So as I sit here in the gloom of our lodge dining room pondering this latest revelation, hoping that my iphone battery life will last long enough to make this post, I thought I'd compare the impact of this latest adverse weather event on our motel business and my online business.

  • There are reports of extremely high seas and trees down on many of the roads in and out of our region. Effectively this is blocking some of our guests arriving later today. No such problem over at my website - the virtual welcome mat is still out and guests can arrive any time.
  • Until my husband gets the generator going, our motel guests (visitors) cannot flush their toilets, have a shower, or boil the jug. Over at my website, my visitors can access all the services/resources/information that they were looking for.
  • I can still get internet via my phone coverage, but responding to emails is slow and tedious - this applies for both businesses.
  • We are not sure if we'll get the morning cleaning done for the lodge. We may need to put out the no vacancy sign; and I hate turning away potential business! No such problem over at my online business... no vacuuming, dusting or polishing is required!

This storm has wreaked havoc on bricks and mortar businesses and there will be hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to much property along the coast.

Meanwhile, my website is tucked away safe and sound inside the secure environment at SiteRubix. Protected, and kept fully optimized and functioning behind the scenes, protecting from hacking, spam, malware, and other malicious activity.

Food for thought during a power cut.

Cheers, Karen

Yep saw some coverage of the weather over there on the Oz news and it looked mighty wild. Just as well you're higher up. Feel for those closer to the coast. Take care Kaz and be safe. ~Mark

Thanks Mark - yes I've been helping out trying to find stranded tourists accommodation as the coast road has been closed overnight and will be closed periodically while they make the repairs...

Mother Nature having her way which is not always easy for us humans. That is such a beautiful road too. Wonderful that you have been able to help people with accommodation. I'll have to look you up next time over there and need somewhere to stay. :)

Sounds like a plan!

Hi there
Glad you are safe, we also have a bit of a disaster in Cape Town as D Day water cut of in April is coming close fast
You can #drought capetown
House holds are restricted to 25ltr a day and some areas have been cut off already
How is your affiliate marketing going?

Yes we are safe and sound, though parts of town and the rest of the country are taking a hammering... there's tourists stranded all over the place as this is in the middle of our peak season.

As for the affiliate marketing - things are ticking along great. I've turned my focus onto promoting WA as part of the Super Affiliate program and I've already had 16 signups this month which is fantabulous! Only one has gone premium, but you gotta start somewhere right?

I feel pretty lucky to be part of the Super Affiliate program - as that will definitely help me stay on task instead of drifting off topic!

How about you?
Cheers, Karen

I also have made the same shift, so I'll see you in Vegas

Pleased to hear you and your family are all ok, take care. Caz :)

Hey Caz, thanks for that - yes we are fine - feeling pretty lucky that our home is well above sea level right at the moment! All the best, cheers, Kaz :)

Glad y'all are doing fine. Thanks for the "food for thought".

Tried and true

Elaine

Hi Elaine, thanks and yes we’re fine! Cheers kaz

Glad your family is safe. Thanks for sharing and hope things get back to normal soon.

Thank you!

I'm sooooo glad that your family is safe. It's sad to lose a huge tree like the one in the picture.

I hope the power is restored soon.

Everyone in your area is in my prayers.

Hi Sondra, power is restored and we've just been out to inspect the damage. Lots of big old trees down and massive king tides from the sea which have caused a lot of flooding to low lying farmland. I think there's going to be a lot of clean up required here over the next few days! First guests have arrived, and we've managed to get the vacuuming done in the nick of time! Thanks for your good vibes! Kaz

Now if I could only get my grandkids there mmmmm Kyle ?
Good luck with the weather

And KIDS!

Well the cyclone went straight down to NZ. It looked mean on the weather photos. A 964 low and a 987 joining up on your west coast.

Yes it's the roughest seas I've seen here for a while! Glad that we're in a slightly elevated location and not right on the beach! Some of the properties down the road have not fared so well... :(

Thank Karen for this thoughtful article. There is a big difference between having an online business and a traditional one.

All the best,

Tadeusz

absolutely. And there are strengths and weaknesses of both.

Karen,
Appreciate your sharing such real live events which makes online business stand out its unique features as described. So, why not working hard to build one from WA community.

Thanks,

Chin
