Wow, My Post is Bombing!

At times every now and then, even the best writer’s posts will bomb, and you will even say to yourself. "Wow, my post is bombing!"

You know, you think you have a very interesting topic, you have studied it inside out and done your best research, and you sit at your computer and you write great content on the subject. And you’ve now written over 2000 words of it.

The photos you’ve included are great, the story is amazing, and the moral is beautiful.

The topic is important, and the story needs to be told.

On a whole, something you feel is truly epic.

In order words, you spent hours pouring your heart and every ounce of your blood and sweat into it. And you think you’ve written “Gone with the Wind.”

And guess what happens? Nothing.

No one reads it, no one comments about it, or hardly anyone even views it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, YOUR POST HAS BOMBED!

What a Wise Man Once Told Me

Here’s something I learned a long time ago when I was in direct door to door selling from a very wise mentor (who I will keep anonymous) who once told me,

“You gotta learn one thing, kid. If you learn just this one thing today, you will make me very happy.

No matter how good you are, or how good you think you are, even the BEST sales people now and again BLOW sales".

Go with the Flow.

Even the BEST sale people blow sales every now and then.

Wow! This was a real “eureka moment” for me.

To this day, I still can hear his words every time I am ready to do a presentation, every time I walk into a seminar room to give a speech, or every time I take the stage.

So you think you’re “War and Peace” novel was neglected, shot down, and has been trampled underfoot by a herd of Clydesdale? So what.

Don’t worry so much. Worrying is not going change things or make any things better.

Your expectations are your biggest problem.

Change your thinking.

Move on. Take a breather for a moment – yeah commiserate, go ahead and lick your wounds. Whatever.

Then dust off the dirt, get up and WRITE a NEW POST.

It’s so simple.

Whenever I feel like I fall short, I can always draw great strength from former mentor’s teachings, and always go back to that ONE thing. “Even the BEST sale people blow sales every now and then.” .

And always remember a few more things:

  • A Great Story and lesson told is never wasted
  • Great content which informs matters no matter what the content is
  • If it was important to voice it, someone out there needs to hear it
  • Someone, somewhere is benefiting from the message in your great story
  • Your writing is constantly being honed
  • In the process, you are learning through trial and error what topics work for your audience
  • A Great Story can catch fire later, if not you can always tweak it

You have now become an even better author. Onward and upward.

Now get back to the drawing board and Get to Work.

You are STILL great!

Please feel free to leave your comments, and thanks for reading!

All the Best.

I have tested this on Facebook. One day a raccoon came to visit and I videotaped my dogs going nuts barking at it. The raccoon nonchalantly cleaned himself and did nothing. I got very few likes.

A few days later the same raccoon comes back and eats his lunch, throws his trash on my porch and passes out cold. I take a photo (no video this time) and the post goes viral.

My husband and I both laughed. We thought the video was so much better but who knows!!

BOTH visuals sound very really funny Patricia! Thanks for sharing it, what also impacts "likes" are the visitors who happen to be on your post for that day.

Perhaps if you posted that first video on a different day you would have received many more likes. Thanks how social media is. Who would think that?

Your story also proves its not always all about the quality, but its about the timing.

And....then there is always the chance it will get "discovered" when you least expect it. Best wishes.

Prescient words Sondra, prescient words!
Never give up, surprises come when least expected.

Keep writing, and Best wishes!

I am discouraged because pretty much no one reads my posts. My site has only been up since April, and I have very little traffic. The most I had in one week was around 67 visitors, and that was mainly because I wrote an animal post (my site is about cruelty free beauty) and shared it in a Facebook animal group I am part of. I know we have to be patient waiting on traffic, but will it truly get better?

Don't be discouraged Linda, I believe you can turn this trend around. That said, may I offer some constructive advice:

First, focus on stronger titles that catch people's interest and attention, if you do this alone you will see improvement. And the more frequently you write, the better communicator you will become.

So back that up with interesting content to your reader. Oh, you say you don't know what interests you readers? Participate in the comments on other's posts here at WA and in social media, pay attention and you will soon discover what the folks who make comments are most interested in.

Good luck, and most of all - keep writing!

Now matter how many great posts, articles.... we have written, the next empty page doesn't know it and doesn't even care, a humbling experience.

You're only as good as your last post, definitely Cb. Isn't this also true in life?

We have to be humble, because whatever accomplishment we achieve, our star quickly fades.

True success is doing it everyday. No exceptions.

It happens, we should keep trying and never give up.
Liked your post!

Yes Rawan, that is the true key: Never Give Up.
"Dust yourself off" keep at it. And write that new post!

Thanks for keeping me in check!

It happens now and then, yes...You understand that it's good, but something just went wrong...But I agree with you, if your story meant something for just one person, it worked! Good post.:)

Right on point, Vera. If it positively affected even one person, you made a forward impact \in the world.

We should try to remember that. Thanks for the acknowledgment and the further inspiration.

Thanks. I needed that!

Cynthia, I needed it too! My post before this one completely "bombed" and I had to write this.

Thanks!

I like your story. You are humble which makes you successful. Keep writing no matter what

Wonderful compliment, thank you Pablo. I always try to be. I learned long afgo the more I think I know, the more I don't know.

We should all remind ourselves to keep writing, and "dust off the dirt." Always question, always reevaluate. It's the only way to success.

Very well written Post! This one sure didn't bomb..lol..I feel mine did today, that's why I first laughed to myself when I started reading your post! I thought it was quite the coincidence because I feel that my post today wasn't up to my usual standards! In fact, I kinda think it sucks...lol But every once in awhile you have a dud I guess...Yesterday's flew, and I was in the top 6...today had major writer's block...lol..Thanks for this wonderful post! :)

Terry, thank you for that kind compliment. I FEEL YOU totally and I think both our recent experiences are quite telling.

A recent post I had written here compelled me to write this one. I thought (and still think) my writing was excellent on that post and it was an interesting topic, but it didn't get the response I was expecting.

Bewildered, I wrote on that post, "Wow, this post is bombing." and immediately became inspired to write this post. And I wrote this post in less than an hour, remembering my experiences.

That's what happens sometimes, its purely organic.

Yeah, I feel you, Kaju. It happens...it's a great way to keep our ego in check.

This post was written from the heart .I wrote this post in less than an hour Veronica, images and all.

In fact, I was rushing near the end of writing it to go somewhere else. I had an appointment.

It's funny, this goes to show we can spend so much time on writing a great article, rewriting sentences, proof reading, selected images etc - but its most often the ones that truly come from the heart that we write quickly and "write themselves" that are the ones that are most appealing and enduring.

This reminds of a post I had written during my "early days" at WA. I wanted to get "deep" so I wrote a post based on a movie about M. Everest. It was profound...it was deep...I'm not even sure if I got 10 likes!!!

But when you think about it, even if you get 100 people to like and comment, if you're being followed by 2,000 or more people, that's still such a small percentage. I have no doubt that you will continue to write from the heart, Kaju.

But which post are you referring to, Kaju that "boomed"?

It was the NYC Pride 2017 post. Go check it out.
I thought the subject was great and my writing was spot on, but maybe peeps just aren't warmed to this topic.
