If they are not willing to agree to a contract, don't do business with them. It protects you and them. Well written and needed read.

100% agreed D!! Thank you for your acknowledgment of this needed read.

Yes, it not only protects you and them, but when presenting a contract to a new client it "weeds out" the serious genuine clients from potential unethical ones.

Thank you for this information.

Derek

My pleasure Derek!

Thanks Kaju for all the information. It's always a good thing to protect oneself.

Yes, not only good but a MUST. Never do anything without a contract C!

If you don't yet, I will happily return the favor when yours is up.:)

Thanks Kaju. A contract is a MUST! I remember when I was doing my first freelance job and being a bit naive at the time, my client took advantage and requested more and more out of me and wasn't paying for these extra services. I mentioned this to my partner who said that I needed to draw up a contract. When I presented the contract to my client, he didn't want to go any further with the project.

I realize how important a contract is to protect your rights otherwise you can get stung big time. This client who owns a travel agent wanted the rights (the code) to the booking system program I wrote which I didn't give him. He wanted to sell it on to others in the industry!

Thanks for this reminder!

Of course Jackie, unless you define the scope of your services in great detail in your contract, the client take advantage of you and will ask for more and more. In fact, the bottom will be limitless! WE learned this the hard way, didn't we:)

Fortunately I learned hoe important contracts were in business at a young age, and once I was on the "contract train" I became staunch about always using them in any business transaction.

Contracts also "weed out" the genuine clients from the disingenuous ones. Your past client had an ulterior motive indeed. I am not surprised he didn't want to go further when you presented him with that contract.

Every revision regardless of how small I draft an addendum and it must be duly signed before I commence work upon that change.

Great lesson here Jackie, Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome Kaju.
What was even more distasteful was this guy was rich. His kids went to a private school and he and his family lived on the same street as Mick Jaggers (from the Rolling Stones) ex-wife Jerry Hall!

The RICH ones are the piranhas Jackie. They are all about the CONQUEST! Good that you stood your ground:)

Great article,

Thank You Cinderella!

Thank you Kaju!

My pleasure as always, Mike!

Hi Kaju,

Thanks for taking the time to share. I couldn't agree more - as we build our online businesses and perhaps expand to other areas, the protection that contracts afford can be priceless.

All the best,

Norman

That protection is BOTH for us and the client Norman. Thanks for this important acknowledgment and for sharing:)

David

My pleasure David, thank you for that knowledgment of how important this is:)

This is really essential between two individuals. Agreements in paper will protect the two parties.

Absolutely Jimmy, it is best for both parties and in their mutual best interests!

I agree totally with you. Contracts are necessary and extremely important in the work we do (if it is for someone else - ie a contract job).

Having the expectations in writing is ensuring that clarity of the work to be done is for all to see.

Then there can be no nasty surprises.

Great post.

Yes Steve, thank you for your most astute comment. Written agreements prevent disagreements:)
