Thanks for this blog all Greek to me today but, look forward to reading how to tomorrow as I love to learn new info. Especially pertaining to useful info for WA. Which is the mainreason I like to read blogs.
Many blessings, Scarlett and Elaine
My pleasure Scarlett and Elaine.
This is very important for your website. Glad you will do the training!
Best to You,
Kaju
Great, I know you are already very familiar with all of this Happy. I know that from reading your comments on other posts how knowledgeable you are.
Glad I can provide a reminder. The training may seem over simple to you, but it is for the benefit of those still not familiar with Chil Themes.

Fantastic advice, Kaju! Something I had been wondering about for a while and which I planned to look into before I start my next site in a couple of months. I'll check out your training tomorrow!
Awesome Sammy, it may even be up sooner than tomorrow night!
Believe it or not, this only came about when I was having a debate with another ambassador here via PM, rather unexpected but I had to get it off my chest!
Absolutely brilliant post Kaju, one I fully agree with completely, for the points you raise in it
I would further add, that another reason for converting to a child theme is this, it allows you to retain functionality and flexibility over your original theme, which if its just on its own, and the author tweaks it, means that you lose some of the original fucntions
This in turns causes you to look for another theme, which ends up costing you time
I've not looked at your tutorial yet on Child themes, but effectively what they are is another theme, in the form of a plugin, which meets the RSQC criteria, which is uploaded onto your initital theme
But yes, its important to do this to safe guard your work and save you hours of frustration, I am doing the same on my site as well
Excellent comtent, thanks for sharing and bookmarked to read your tutorial
Great added points Dave. Huge Thank You!
This article was inspired based on a PM debate I was having tonight with another WA member.
This was an unexpected write for sure, but I needed to get this "off my chest."
My Child Theme tutorial will be a very simple one for those who have little experience with them, but just as valuable all the same.
Thank You Dave,
I appreciate it and I've learned even more.
Kaju
Thanks for your comment, the way to look at Child themes, is that they are a (needed) sheet of paper, laid on top of your theme.
They confused the heck out of me a year ago, but now they are so simple to use and put you in control of your site at all times, which I am sure you will cover in your training : )
Great analogy with that "needed sheet of paper" Dave. You are on fire tonight!
Yep. Child Themes have been a major de-stressor for me, certainly that extra layer of peace of mind.

Thanks Kaju, just a question though, if you regularly backup your site, would you really need a child theme?
I would say Yes Kim.
Here is a hypothetical situation: What if WordPress updated during the middle of the day after you made a very important CSS coding change BUT before you made the latest backup.
That can happen and HAS happened more than once this year.
And if it did at the wrong time, without a Child Theme, any non-Appearance > Customizer great changes you made to your site would be lost forever.

Glad you found this article helpful Glen. It was inspired by a conversation I had tonight. Unexpected.
Well, it was an interesting post to read, about the importance of using Child Theme I will wait until tomorrow to look your training.
Cheers.
Jacqueline
As long as you have your Child Theme activated, any WP updates will not break your site.

I think maybe I used a child theme when I set up my site. I'm still only on my first site. How can I check that it is a child theme?
When you go to the Customizer in your Word Press theme, Wendi, if it is already a child theme the name will read of the form "Active Theme: sitename-child"
Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it.
Wendi :)
Here's how I found out on my theme.
Dashboard - Appearance - Themes. Then on the theme, Theme Details in a little box. I clicked that and read... This is a child theme of Meditation!!
So, that's a good thing right? I'm OK
Wendi
Of Course! :):)
That is a Good Thing! That means your child theme is active, and your theme is "Meditation."
Here look at my 2 screenshots in Dashboard - Appearance - Themes to compare, the 1st image with the 'Child" and "Parent" side-by-side. and the 2nd image after I clicked on "Theme Details"
My Child is "Active" here, the"Parent" is not.
Kaju, I can't tell you thanks enough. I really worried about this a lot yesterday. Now, I'm relieved.
Wendi :)
Wonderful Wendi! Please let me know if I can be of more help to you.
Will do, my friend.
Awesome, at your service!
