Most themes just show excerpts of the posts on the first page but some show the posts in their entirety. You can change themes or use the Read More tag.

Hi Marion,
Thanks for your response. I'm not sure if I made myself clear in my question.

I want to keep my home page as it is, a page, but with the length of it's content reduced by cutting off the bottom half of it's current content and then making that "cut off" portion of content into a separate post that I would post to my blog. Then, I would create a link to that post from my home page.

This is what raised my concern about duplicate content, by cutting the content from my home page and simply making it into a post and adding to my blog roll, would this be seen as duplicate content by Google and other search engines.

George,
In order for you to have just one blog post article on the home page your going to have to change that post to a page then make it static just as you would the home page. I do not believe that
there would be any other way of doing this :)
Susan :)

Hi Susan,
Could I keep the original post in my blog roll and also create a static home page using the same post, I've seen sites where this appears to have been done, I assumed they used the same blog post for both pages.
However, if I created two different documents on my website with the same content, a post and a page, would this be regarded as duplicate content?
I was hoping that there might be a way of keeping my blog post in the blog roll and also using it to create my home page.
Thank you so much for your reply,
George

George,
I would think that Google may see that as possible duplicate content, the question to you is could you possibly change it up
just a small amount to make the content a slight be different.
Then using it as a static home page and keeping it in your
rolling post would not be a problem :)
Susan

Thanks Gordon,
I went back and worked that part out. Is there a way that I can make that one blog article only appear on the new home page?
I only want that blog post to appear and no others.
George

I think, you can change through the setting of your WP dashboard. Go to setting and choose reading on the tab. Then, change your homepage display to the post that you want to display.

The post must be in PAGE, not in a POST. So, you need to change it first to PAGE, then display as your homepage :)

Thank you Muhamad.

Hi everyone,

I had a change of heart and removed my about post from one domain (which I no longer want to use) and placed it onto another, which will be my focus.

You should put in a redirect and no google doesn't delete posts automatically you have to inform with that redirect.
Robert-A

Thank you for your reply Robert.

I have already deleted the about post on the original site and posted it to the new one.

Can I still do a redirect as I have already deleted the post?

What is the best way for me to do a redirect considering that I have already deleted the post?
George

Did you keep a copy of the original URL.
You will need this to redirect.

If not you can always do a broken link check you will be able to see if the search engines have picked up on it being deleted.

Broken Links Checker

There is also a plugin for redirects.

I'm off out for a few hours but get back to me later if you're still stuck.

I really appreciate your effort. I'll get some time to go through this tomorrow.

You may find that pasting into the Text tab works better than the Visual tab.

Totally agree. MS Word has HTML tags in it that will mess things up or at the very least slow down your page/post.

Thanks Marion.

Thanks Pj, George

Hi Marion,

I have been working on my content as you know and I did not get back to WP to see what you meant in your reply. You said, "You may find that pasting into the Text tab works better than the Visual tab".

I am ready to add my home page content to my web site and I have come to the dashboard where I have realised that I cannot see what is the text tab and what is the visual tab.

Sorry to ask this question three weeks late, I thought it would be obvious when I got into the dashboard.

Regards,

George

Hi Marion,

I sorted this out. I started to enter the content manually when I noticed two little tabs, one said Visual and the other, Text. I thought to myself in lightening speed, that's what Marion was talking about!!" So thank you.

So that I understand this. Cutting and pasting from a MS word doc into the WP editor in Text mode avoids any coding clashes between Word and WP. Is my understanding correct? Does the Text mode somehow clean out any coding attached to the text that has come from the Word document?

Is this how you transfer your content into you web site, Word doc to WP or do you use somesort of plugin that keeps your text clean for your website?

Thanks again,

George

On the right-hand side of the post or page you'll find the Visual and Text tabs. Click on the Text tab and paste in your content.

I added this comment before I saw your second response. I don't usually use Word, I type directly into WordPress. But on the rare occasions I've copied and pasted from Word into WordPress then I've used the Text tab.

You need to add your images after you've pasted in the text. But do that in the Visual Tab.

You can get gaps in your content working from word documents.
Word has its own coding and that often conflicts with Wordpress.

Tip, I have a test website, and have an editor plugin on it, I don't want that plugin on my real website because it has the habit to remove the visual tab. So when I want special text, I make it on my test website(same theme) and copy and paste it from there, right from the text editor. The only thing you got to add are the internal links.

Works like a charm.

It's wise to open a test website anyway, to test new plugins etc.

Thanks Loes. I will look into this.

It works for me. I did have to move stuff around a bit. Nothing major.

Thanks Deidre. I think I know what I will start with. First I will do a little research and then get started.

Okay, cool...
You want at least 50 Monthly Searches and the QSR at 300 OR LESS. Let us know, if you need help.
Be really specific and you'll be okay.
You're welcome!

Thank you Deidre. That's a task for this week when I get back to the office. Thanks for the offer for help. If I need some assistance with this task I will drop you a note for some help! Thanks again, George

Cool...you're welcome!

Hi Deidre,
Help! I have finalised my initial selection for a niche, it is going to be the energy efficient home audience. Now, I am only at lesson 4 of course 1. I haven't come to the research course material yet. When you say I want at least 50 monthly searches and the QSR at 300 or less, I don't know what this means. Is this part of SiteRubix, or another key word search tool? And, it sounds like it is better for me to perform this research prior to choosing the domain name and starting on the website, is this correct?
George

You said energy efficient home audience...let me look...be back.

Okay, energy efficient home audience, won't work. I just used Jaaxy and nobody is searching for that niche. I do see other options...
I am attaching a Jaaxy Screenshot.
You will learn about selecting your niche and how to use Keywords.
Yes, get your niche finalized before buying your domain.
Take a look as I marked with red arrows. Any of these will work. There are many more great niches too...surely, you'll find something that will work.
Be really specific.

Hi Deidre,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I see, it is Jaaxy that I use for keyword searches and thank you for the screen shot, I see what you mean.
As I am only at lesson 4 and following the process, I have not studied lesson 7 which is about key words and Jaaxy. Even though I have not yet registered my domain name or created my web site I will study lessons 5, 6 and 7 and get up to speed with how to research a niche before I actually register a domain name and launch a web site.
Thank you for your assistance,I greatly appreciate it.
George

Oh, great! Okay...I'm always here for you! Study hard, George...lol!

Yes I will, at the moment the brain is boggling with all the info. on WA.
And thanks again.

:)

Either way is fine.
Some websites are only informational and some conatin products
Even your consultant niche needs to be researched. Find out if people are searching for that niche.
You'll be fine.
