Watch this short video to learn how and where to add the Read More/Continue Reading tag to your posts.

  1. Go to Posts > All Posts
  2. Right-click to open the post in a new tab.
  3. Now click on the tab to open your post in edit mode.
  4. Click into the text where you want to insert the Read More tag.
  5. Click on the Read More icon.
  6. Update.

You can have all posts show as excerpts. Or you can have a sticky post which shows in full with the rest of the posts as excerpts underneath. Or you can have your latest post in full and the rest as excerpts.

The choice is yours.

You can even edit the text that appears. Instead of the generic "Read more" you can add something unique and individual to each post. See Loes's post at

You are going to love this little trick! Read More

Hi Marion. I have the twenty sixteen theme, every post I will write I will have to use the More tag? Or should I change the theme?
Thank's for your help.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
It would be a lot simpler to change the theme, Claude. Or you could go to Settings > Reading and have the blog pages show only 3 posts. Personally, I would choose a new theme.

Hi Marion, For some reason my post does not take the " read more" I have tried it several way by clicking 2 lines down, no, then 6 lines down still no,

I click to insert the tag and in the editor it inserts a line tag but when I view the post online, there is nothing has changed ?
Reply
CathAnon Premium
Same here ... it must be the theme that I have ...
Reply
MBartley Premium
I didn't think of that?
Reply
CathAnon Premium
My theme's no longer supported by the developer. However, if yours is, suggest you ask at the support forum for your theme ... they're usually prompt in replying.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
It doesn't change the post itself, Murray, it changes the way your post appears in the blogroll. When someone clicks on the "read more" they are taken to the full post.
Reply
MBartley Premium
Hi Marion, when I installed the tag nothing changed. When viewing the page like you did in the video there was not a "read more" on the page to be found. I tried it on different lines thinking maybe I did something wrong. I even went in on a different computer to look at the blog page online but there still wasn't a "read more" could it be my theme?

Give me the link to your website so I can check things out,
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Now I'm confused, Murray. You are already displaying excerpts from your posts on the home page. You don't need a More tag.

Some themes such as Twenty Sixteen display the entire posts on the home page and the only way to have them display excerpts instead of the entire post is to use the More tag.
Reply
MBartley Premium
OK, so your saying just leave it alone the way it is?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes. You don't need to do anything about the way the excerpts of your posts are displayed on the home page.
Reply
MBartley Premium
Thank you Marion for taking the time to check it out.
I will leave it alone then. Thank you for your help.

Hi Smartketeer, Thank you for your kind response. Kindly refer to my print screen website, there are no tool bars with "read more" icon to insert into my paragraph? where do I find it?
Reply
smartketeer Premium
That's because you are using the new Gutenberg editor not the old Classic Editor.

This is exactly what Lynne and I were looking for, I have 2017 theme and its the same as 2016 theme. Thank you SO much for this Marion! :)
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes, you'd think that WordPress would have at least made excerpts optional if not default in their flagship themes.

Thanks for the training Marion.

I do have a question that maybe you can answer.

I published a post today with a "continue reading" tag inserted though on my blog roll the "continue reading" words and link do not appear beneath the partial post.

It's interesting because the post below this one in the roll (from months ago) also has a "continue reading" tag and it DOES have the "continue reading" words and link ... and it works.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

ROCK ON!

Hey Eric,

This is what I suggest you to look at: go back to the post that is giving you problems with the continue reading link

In the Visual edit window if you can see where it is, make not of the words it is inserted between.

Click on the Text tab so that your edit window displays only the code and text of your post.

Look for the following code:
<!--more-->

If so much as one piece of that code is missing it will not work properly.

If there is ANY piece of code missing, you need to replace the code so it will display properly.

Hope this helps you.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Does your new post have the dashed line exactly the same as the previous post? Like Trish suggested have a look at the code in the Text tab to make sure it's correct. If you still can't get it to work then remove the read more tag and put it in again in a different place.
Reply
EKautz Premium
This is what is showing on the text tab of my post - "<!--more-->", minus the quotations of course.

I have moved it to different positions without luck as well.
Reply
EKautz Premium
Thanks Trish.

Here's what is on the text tab where the continue reading function should be: <!--more-->

It seems right to me and looks like the other read more/ continue reading codes I have (that are working). This on only displays the text above the function and does not include a hyperlink to continue reading that opens up the rest of the post.

Any other thoughts or is it time for the techies to swoop in and save the day?
Reply
Triblu Premium
Following Marion's suggestion may be just the "medicine" your post needs Eric.

You would be shocked to learn how many time I have had to hunt for one little character (as I am certain Marion has too!) to fix a web page built with HTML.

One character missing can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. So, please try what Marion suggested and then let us both know your results.

Thanks, Marion. This is the solution I am looking for. Just one more question, how do I change the default word "Continue Reading" to other words, for example: "Click Here to Read My Latest Review of Wealthy Affiliate"?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
That's a theme thing. Go to wordpress.org and look up the support for the theme you are using. If the question has not been asked and answered then you can ask your question there.

I don't think it's possible to have different words for each post.

Thanks, Marion, it's what I wanted. Is there simple way to hide the categories, tags and comments behind the excerpt and instead just show it after the full text of the post?

There could be a way using CSS. Go to wordpress.org and look for answers there.

Thank you for this bit of training. Before, I thought I should leave my posts without the read more tag, that way people could see them all on the same page and it would be more convenient.

Your training has helped me to see that 1) it's more visually appealing to have a short blurb, and 2) seeing a sneak peek will cause readers to click on the post itself so their visit isn't bounce.

Very helpful!

I was ready to ask a question ... and then you answered my question in your last verbal sentence. You said ... "it;s a Theme Thing".

Of course, I'm referring to the "Read More" button versus the "Continue reading" text links. I've always felt the Read More button looked a little more professional.

My current Theme uses the Continue reading text links, but I don't feel strong enough about the matter change my theme just for this.
Reply
