Continuing my question here: Is it always a good idea to place a link to your website in the comment form when visiting another's blog? I'm asking because most of the blogs th

if you make a comment on someone else blog and it is about home made bread for instance you can mention that keyword and say something like "the smell of home made bread always invokes the smells of my childhood, thank you for posting this

Thanks Catherine, I know the content of the comment is helpful to the blog owner, but I meant it in a way for the person who is actually posting the comment. The comment form has the option to place your website address and then the name becomes clickable to their website. If your post on homemade bread isn't related to a site that promotes promotes golf balls and then places their link along with their comment does that help or hinder SEO?

Catherine, thanks for this tip. It never crossed my mind that keywords in the comment section could help with SEO

Links are important although not as important as they were. it does have a small effect

How long after the first one did you wait to start another project? I was wondering, would it be a bad idea to backburner a niche you just started to start a new one?

Take your time, work on the one you have for now.

Thanks! much appreciated all! I suppose your right. It's just that had a really great idea for another one because it's a problem I have now that I'm getting older. It's pretty specific, but I'm sure that there are others that have similar due to different circumstances. It's something I should be looking into myself right now before it creates more health issues, so thought might as well create a site for it.

If you are losing interest in your niche or no longer want to carry on with it would I start a new one.
Wait until you have momentum and then start another one.

I have heard too many people here say they tried getting more than 1 site started and ending up starting all over again cause they weren't focussed.

Wanda

As far as I'm concerned you should only venture out once your initial niche has gained momentum & begins to earn money so that you can afford to take the time out & focus on launching another niche by leveraging the profits of your first one.

100% on one site will give you stronger returns than 50% effort split between 2 sites, so build your first site... Get it to run & earn by itself, then focus your 100% on the next site.

Only if you don't think it will pan out as you first thought it would.
And if that is your reason ask yourself why and why a new site and new niche would be any different.
I guess I am saying is it a viable niche (almost all are) and have you given it a full go?

Oh I know it is popular, but to be honest I don't know that I'd be doing a whole lot of art. I do enjoy it, but it's not something I do every day. I thought maybe I could go ahead and do this at the slower pace I work in it and then go ahead and work on something else besides. I didn't really choose carefully my first one. I took what first popped into my head.

Besides Facebook & Instagram which ones do you suggest and why? I'm trying to decide what to sign up with. I am mainly only familiar with facebook, but don't want to use it

Create a youtube channel. Don't try to be perfect at all. Be real/Be yourself.
Take the video and strip the audio (bam! you have a podcast episode)
Take the video and get it transcribed (bam! you have content for a blog post or a free pdf to give away)

You got this!

Pitofly

I thought I'd take a look at reddit and tumblr while I was at it. It seems a less productive day, with me spending more time than expected on things other than content. Thanks all!

It is so easy to do Elizabeth. Don't beat yourself up about it. Tomorrow is another day. Have a great week.

Instagram is for the younger than 35 age group. Facebook sucks in every way.
Pinterest is the only social media site that drives traffic to our blogs/websites and it is over 85% females, which is my target audience.
You can also try Twitter.
LinkedIn is very good if you are a business owner/professional.

I had never used social media in any form (unless you count LinkedIn) before creating accounts for my website. I thought that Instagram would be my preferred platform, but like you, I find it frustrating that I have to use my phone to post. As a result, I'm much more active on Twitter; I've posted about 3x more there than on Instagram.

I use Pinterest because music is a very visual platform. I find it fun and easy to use but it comes down to your target audience.
How best can you reach them?

Lily 😊🎵

I've been there before a while back, but only to browse around. I guess I should take a closer look. My site is going to be visual also. Thanks I'll look into it. Do you know of any others that has something like group discussions similar to Facebook?

Sorry I'm still learning.

Lily 😊🎵

Great recipes too. Try the Mississippi Pot Roast with Ranch dressing. I know, it sounds awful. Try it, really good.

Sounds awful but I believe you Mark.
Strange person. 🤣

That is my favorite Instant Pot recipe, everyone loves it!

I am a competition chef and have won the World Championship BBQ competition held in Memphis in May with about 400 teams from around the world back in 2010. I had to try it. I did not think it would work. I was wrong.

Here is a song for you from one of my oldest, dearest friends and
drinking buddies. I have known Keith for 45 years. One very successful songwriter and performer. Has a nice mansion in NashVegas too.

That’s fabulous., congratulations. I’m trying to eat more vegetarian but I can’t give up my BBQ ribs ;-)

I'm so glad he's not strange and is just like me.🤣🤣🤣

Wait... I just realized you said music is visual. o.O ;-)
This is a bit tough for me this social stuff. I have a hard time learning everything and balancing time between everything.

This has me lost. Kind of looks like a continued convo from elsewhere, although I agree with @Aussiemuso doesn't sound very appetizing.

Sounds disgusting, but tastes great.

Anything with Ranch Dressing can't be bad. Do you use the seasoning mix or marinate it in the actual bottle dressing. I have used bottled Ranch in a chicken stir fry that I use to prepare. It rocks.

Take care
Charlotte

The recipe is on Pinterest and uses the dry mix packet.

Dry ranch dressing mix, dry brown gravy or dry onion soup mix, beef broth, pepperoncini, onion, butter, chuck roast. Delicious!

Sounds yummy

Next time I make it I am going to cut the gravy mix in half, add some homemade sour cream and noodles for a llttle dish called Russian/Mississippi Stroganoff. lmao

Has anyone addressed this law regarding children under 13 years of age? I'm asking because my first niche I picked is art related, which naturally attracts children. I am not s

Being a big believer in privacy, the path I took is to never use any Google stuff on my websites because they are one of the biggest problems. So I didn't do that for COPPA but just because I am completely against Google and others obsessed with collecting data on everyone.

Anyway so things like Google Analytics collect data tracking people around the web, Displaying Google ads on your site... again they are collecting data on the visitor every time an ad is displayed, YouTube videos on your site... again they are collecting data on everyone. YT was hit hard by it and they simply passed it on to the content creators.

So... I think... that is the gist... just do not collect data on children. It seems to me the easiest way to do that is to simply not collect data on any person period.

Putting pages / website behind a paywall (requiring credit card, Paypal, etc) would be another way.

Ok that does make sense regarding Google. I recently became annoyed when my cell phone gave me an error message saying that "body sensors" are required to be activated in order to send and receive texts. Sheesh.

Anyway, is there any way to have something like adsense and analytics that don't have a lot of tracking info taken? I seem to remember something from years ago, where you could place ad banners on your site, but just tell the company what your site was about and they would show ads accordingly.

I don't need in depth information, but it would be nice to be able to see how many visit as well as where in the world they came from.

I use WP Statistics. And I have it set to use anonymized ip addressing (the last digit of ip address is set to 0) and then I also have it converting that into an anonymized hash before storing it. It is impossible to convert that hash back to identify the person. Finally, even these anonymized visitor stats are deleted after 60 days.

Doing that... when I look at stats all I can see about a visitor is they came from a certain country (USA, China, etc) on a certain day using a certain browser (Firefox, Chrome, etc) and the site that referred them to mine (Google, etc).

Browser Country Date ...................... IP Address
Chrome USA December 28,2019 da6ff1f51b219808367c365874671f38f0311b6e

WP Statistics was the best that I found. I checked out many and tested a few.

I also have a somewhat lengthy section in my privacy policy covering things people can do to help guard their privacy online such as only using Startpage.com or DuckDuckGo.com for searching, using StartMail.com or ProtonMail.com for their email accounts, and getting a VPN such as ExpressVPN.com or NordVPN.com to use whenever they are online.

If enough people get into protecting their privacy online or all web browsers simply had it built-in period that would be an ideal solution.

Thanks, I actually found that while browsing the available plugins just a few minutes ago. I installed it and tried to see what it looks like then adjust settings, but now I get this message "too many requests" and am unable to log into the dashboard. I was going uninstall and also take a look at Koko Analytics, but I fear I may have broke something before I can compare the 2.

I sent a ticket so hopefully I didn't cause any damage that can't be fixed.

I have ran into that on my sites before too even before using WP Statistics. I think maybe it is a combination of plugins and themes maybe that does it but am not sure. I will check out Koko.

Thanks!

Great Question, Elizabeth--some good answers below, but I'm hanging on for more!

Hope a privacy policy update will help. Don't see why they place the responsibility on the website owner. There really should be something placed on the computer of the child so website will know a child has arrived at their site and be auto-adjusted accordingly. But at least there isn't a complete auto-limiting of everyone like they're going to be doing on Youtube. At least I hope so. :)

My websites aren't directed at children. I found this for you though.

You would have to have a privacy Policy in place compliant with Coppa rules. It depends on each country but I found this website that will help you. Especially if you are collecting data. Mostly are guided by parents or should be anyway.

https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/childrens-online-privacy-protection-rule-six-step-compliance

Find the right rules for the country you want to target or if global. The link should give you good guidance and some genuine rules.

I would google for information as you will have to have the right Privacy and disclaimers in place..

:)

Good information to know, Debs!

@Debs66 thanks for the link and info, heading for to link now to check out.

This is something I've been wondering about myself. If I understand correctly, coppa affects all content online, not just YouTube. I'm not sure if there should be something about it in my disclaimer. It's pretty much impossible to try and block your site from kids after all...

I do hope it gets addressed. Not sure how it will work out in other niches, but according to keyword research my site looks like it wouldn't be very popular. I do know it is a topic of interest. I'm wondering if even keywords are effected or if its just that most traffic comes from social media.
