What Matters More? Earning Or Ranking At Wealthy Affiliate?

There is no doubt in my mind that Wealthy Affiliate (WA) is an amazing community. I have worked all over the world in many organisations, small to huge, and have never experienced the kind of across-the-board camaraderie that I here at WA.

From day one the welcoming and support have been unparalleled. I would even say that if it were not for the support that I receive here every day, I may have walked away by now.

This is no easy path that we have chosen to build businesses in an arena that is new for the majority of our members.

Mothers, fathers, students, laid off engineers, footballers, coaches, teachers, doctors, retired grandparents - you name it we have the profile here.

The Emotive Attraction To WA

Whilst there is the "make money online" attraction to WA, which is usually the first point of attraction, there is something else that happens to our members when they get here.

Emotions start to run high.

I took a much-needed weekend break and came back this morning to find eleven (11) private messages (PMs) from members asking about being an Ambassador. I wondered if something had happened over the weekend that I did not know about but, things seemed rather usual.

The interest in being an Ambassador was unusually high in my neck of the woods. As I read each PM it dawned on me that each member has a strong emotional pull to being "up there", as one member put it.

I did indicate to each one that there was no monetary gain from being an Ambassador. It was simply working hard to support our members. The majority did not seem to mind. They were excited about being "seen" by everyone with their name "in lights".

Recognition does have its value.

Ambassadors 50 Days On

I have shared that I play around with metrics in my spare time. Perhaps it is the restless Actuary in me. 🤔 So a few days ago, 16 May 2020 to be exact, I took a snapshot of our Ambassadors and this is what it looked like.

Ranks 1, 2 and 3 are reserved for Kyle, Carson and Jay.

WA Ambassadors 16 May 2020

Today, 50 days on, the picture looks a little different and I am thinking that I will keep Rank #4 reserved for Kevin. 😊

WA Ambassadors 6 July 2020

One of the first things I noticed is that approximately one-third of our current Ambassadors are new. The others moved up and down between 1 to 7 points, at most. Those Ambassadors have been there for between 6 to 2,500 days with one-third being there for over one (1) year.

Should You Be An Ambassador At Wealthy Affiliate?

This is VERY personal and subjective. You are the only person who can answer this question. I do suggest though that you think about which path you take. You may end up at the junction where they both meet but travelling both roads at the same time may be tougher than you think.

Everyone speaks about how hard it is to build their business and rank highly at WA. And it is because they both take a lot of investment.

What is obvious to me is that to become an Ambassador who can sustain such high ranking, it takes time and dedication. Just like it does to build your business. This is the very same reason I have not been rushing the "make money" side of building my business either.

I want to be here for the long haul and to sustain positive and consistent growth for my businesses. In addition, I want to do each one well. My footprint must be evident on what I produce and the quality of my work.

So many members come and go in our two million community. Think about the reasons for that for a minute.

I know that I do not want to be another statistic with hopeful words that I did not make good on. I trust that you feel that way too.

Looking forward to being with you for a very long time. 😃

That was a great post, Cassi!

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I've been totally absorbed by the community here at WA and everyone's willingness to help. It does take time, but I find that I learn even more when I help others than when I just focus on the training. I know becoming an ambassador is definitely not for everyone, but I really find it hard to resist. It is almost automatic, but I just love the experience too much to give it up.

You certainly gave me a lot of things to think about!

Great post,
Majo

Maria,

I am pleased to know that you found the blog provocative.
The more information you have, the better decision you will make.

Most people aspire to be an Ambassador.
They are the C-Suite of WA and the gain the most recognition, so it makes sense.

Like you, I learn A LOT from my daily interactions with fellow members.
It is the part of WA that enjoy the most.

All the best to you.
Cassi

Hi Cassi,

Well thank you, I enjoyed reading that, and plenty of food for thought as well.

I look at WA ranking as a double-edged-sword:

On the one hand, potentially without even realising it, we are learning valuable "online marketing" skills by interacting with our colleagues, peers, and friends here at WA.

We are discovering how to reach out to like-minded people in an honest, humble, and helpful manner (well, will you look at that, see what I've unwittingly created, we'll have to call this the 3 H's).

These skills are transferable to our everyday marketing exploits - how we produce content, how we interact with people in our niche, on our own sites, via social media, forums, etc.

However, on the other hand.

We do now live in a world where many of us have become so used to instant gratification, which has been created by our use of social media, and the ease of communication.

I'm not sure if any of us can honestly say that it doesn't give us a warm glow inside and a massive lift when we receive this "instant gratification" in the form of likes, follows, comments, thumbs ups, pins, repins, retweets, call it what you will.

And sometimes chasing a specific status can get in the way of building a business (controversial perhaps).

I applaud anyone who has Ambassador status and is running a successful, profitable business at the same time.

As you've quite rightly pointed out - that takes a LOT of time and dedication on two fronts...

Something I don't personally see myself being capable of achieving anytime soon.

Partha

Partha,

You have made some excellent points to add to our food for thought, hitting the nail on the head with this comment:

"I'm not sure if any of us can honestly say that it doesn't give us a warm glow inside and a massive lift when we receive this "instant gratification" in the form of likes, follows, comments, thumbs-ups, pins, repins, retweets, call it what you will."

As Roy said, this can become addictive.
I am sure that many of our members struggle to find this kind of support in their traditional work environment.

The communication and interactions at WA are also VERY important for helping us to become adept at building relationships with our own visitors and clients.

So, find your own balance is important and I am quite sure that the weights will move depending on needs and priorities.

Thank you so very much for your feedback.

This is an excellent and well-written post on a topic that is essential to consider for all people that start their business venture via WA, and for that matter any other venture you start to follow in your life.

When you register at WA you are asked what your goals are, and that should strike some food for thoughts with everybody. What is it you really want when starting up?

On my part, it was the outlook of starting to make some money in a not too distant future, having my time for retirement from my present job approaching.

But then I noticed the interaction in the community, the possibility to reach out and help others, which is important in all that I do also outside of WA. But, the interaction on the WA platform is addictive and can easily drive you away from your own original motives.

But as you write in your post everyone needs to make an educated and well-considered decision on what is most important;

helping others and gaining rank, doing business, or a mix of both?

I don´t believe everyone is able to take that decision early on in their business venture. People need to have the concept of affiliate marketing grow on them and then re-evaluate your goals and working methods after some months.

I personally believe in the mix of both, helping others gaining rank as well as doing business. It is possible with self-discipline and being true to your DMO.

By helping others you are also increasing your own competence in the business which in turn your own business will benefit from.

What I learn, from interacting with others and trying to help others on this platform, and helping others in my daytime job, I can directly apply to my own tasks building my business as well as progressing with my tasks in my daytime job.

I am not sure that you can be truly successful without a balance of the two.

Roy, you have captured the essence of this discussion so succinctly.
Thank you!

This resonates with me:
"People need to have the concept of affiliate marketing grow on them and then re-evaluate your goals and working methods after some months."
That is precisely it!

It is like anything new and the process we have to grow through to establish our personal norms, boundaries and objectives.
It is the reason why we have a courting period in relationships and a probationary period during employment.

Like you and Greg, I will not function at my best without our community and the daily interaction that has now become a business and personal norm.

Thank you for your support and thoughts.
Cassi

U have answered a very important and oft repeated question splendidly. You have brought it all out so well.

Compliments on your writing skills Ms Ambassador, and also on the supreme clarity of thought and expression.

We hope to see you lead us to better things as we go along this journey of life.

Luv,
Aparna

Aparna, thank you so very much for your confidence and kind words.

Sorry to disappoint but I am not an Ambassador.
It would be an honour but I do believe that it has to be earned and I have a long way to go yet. 😊

I am also following your progress and I a look forward to you achieving greater success here at WA.

Be safe and well.
Cassi

Rankings. When I first came in, I wasn't the least bit interested in rank or followed me. Thats changed over the past 8 or 9 months. I've come to really enjoy engaging with our community. We share ideas, thoughts, insights and so many other things.Yes, we have OEC, Bootcamp, Jays webinars, and too many other trainings to mention. Thats all well and good, and the lessons are invaluable, but there is so much more to gain by reading blogs, interacting with our community and such. Yes, yes, yes, build our businesses and create a path to our goals, and this is the primary reason for me being here. But its also about the side learning, about asking and answering questions, and creating some very good friendships. And it's also a good feeling when someone reaches out to you thanking you for helping. The social side of WA is one I would trade or ignore. Thanks Cassi.

Greg

Greg, you are very welcome. 😊

I feel the same as you do.
I have made some really authentic friendships here at WA.
And, I mean FRIENDSHIPS.

This morning I was working at 2 am and also engaging with 2 WA friends who were night owls like me.
We got through our work while chatting about life and parenting and sharing ideas for keyword research.

I LOVE! the interaction and I do learn so much more travelling off the beaten WA track.

My business building is on track but I do believe that I would not have gotten this far ahead without the relationships and support.

So good to have our feedback!

Thank you.
