Always Remember Those Who Served

Today is Memorial Day here in the U.S. and many see it as a day off from work, a day for going to the beach to start the summer season, a day to go shopping and take advantage of the sales, a day to barbecue and gather with friends outdoors, and/or a day to relax.

However Memorial Day is really about honoring the men and women who have fought and died for the freedoms we take for granted, as well as support those who are still serving our country in the Armed Forces. Let us always remember those who served and support the ones who still do. The below photo is of the veterans memorial cemetery where my father is buried not far from Fort Dix in New Jersey.

My father fought in World War II and was part of the famous Buffalo Soldier division of the American Army. Yes even Bob Marley did a song about the Buffalo Soldier, which was formed in 1866 as part of the U.S. 10th Calvary Regiment. From it's start until it's end in 1951 it was comprised of mostly African American soldiers.

The below video is a collection of photos of the 92nd Infantry Division of the United States Army during their liberation of Italy in World War II. This is the Army division that my father was a part of and who were instrumental in freeing Italy from Hitler’s war machine. Thank you Dad! Not only did the 92nd ID win many battles but they also captured many German soldiers. Click the picture of the Buffalo Soldier patch insignia to watch the video.

Though we may have our differences among our own people and with those in other countries, America has always been looked upon when help is needed. We are not a perfect country, far from it, but then again no country is perfect. When trying times arise whether from war or natural disasters, America is there to help whether it is as a leading role or just a support role.

So today let all of us Americans never forget those who have given so much for so many both here and abroad. Let us honor the memory of those who have fallen and give our blessings to those who still stand guard. Have a safe Memorial Day to all.

And a thaks-giving is due by those who were helped by the Americans in regaining their freedom!

Yes Donatella! Not just the Italians but every other nationality that has been helped by those who gave of themselves so that others could be free.

Nice tribute

Thank you Cheick. I am proud of my father and all those who were with him, came before him and those who came after.

Outstanding post Robert ... thanks for sharing!

You are welcome Joe and thank you for your comment.

Thank you for that touching blog. I'm a former Marine that did two tours to the sand box. Today is very important to me because sadly I lost a little brother in Iraq during a rescue mission of a downed Army Blackhawk. He was with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines My other little brother suffered from PTSD after the initial invasion of Iraq. He was with the Army's 3rd ID. He later took his own life. So to anyone who reads this blog just remember this. We enjoy our freedom because someone out there selflessly put their very own life on the line for our country and paid the ultimate price. Thank you boomergp08.

You are welcome Joshua and thank you. Thank you for the service to our country and for the sacrifices you, your brothers, and your family has made. God Bless to you all and give you the strength to live on with the great memories of your fallen heroes knowing that one day you will all be together again.

Here here!! Excellent blog again!! Have a happy safe Memorial Day to you too!

Thank you and same to you Steve "burnzy". :)

Great tribute Robert!! Thank God for these men and women who though they knew the cost, still devoted themselves to serving this great nation and paid the ultimate price. America will not have the influence it has in the world if not for these men and women.

God bless and protect those who are currently serving all over the world. Let's not forget their families too. Their families have been there to support them and have sacrificed a lot in order for them to be able to serve.
Thank God for our service men and women! God bless and protect you where ever you are.
Onyeka

So true Onyeka! Any and every serviceman or servicewoman cannot be praised without giving praise and thanks to the families who support them far more than any of us can ever dream of supporting them. Without their support and sacrifice our armed forces cannot do the great job that they do. So thank you military families and God Bless to you all.

Thanks for your thoughts.

You are welcome Bud. Thanks for your comment.

Thank you for your kind words, as I was one of them in Kuwait in 1983.
Rich

Thank you Rich for your service and God Bless.

Amen to that Robert!

My Father just turned 99 last week - He fought in WWII, and as a Captain saw a lot of action in Europe - he was at the Battle of the Bulge, but made it home safe (although most of his left hand was blown off on the last day of the war).

I am so grateful to him and all the other service men and women - past and present.

Wow, 99! God Bless him. Battle of the Bulge was a BIG battle back then, not many came home from that. Thank God your father did otherwise you may not have been Joanne. Happy Memorial Day!

You've got that right!
Thanks so much for your post - they all deserve our thanks.
- now ... if only the VA felt the same!

It took a very long time for the VA to get to where it is and it will take a long time to fix it. Sad but true.

I gmegs my grandfather also fought in the ARMY WWII , in the BIG RED ONE and one of his campaigns was the Battle of the Bulge, Tell your dad "Happy Birthday" and thank him for his service, I will remember him to day along with all those before and after him for their sacrifice...

Thanks DIGGER12 - we have much to be grateful for.

1st Infantry Division = The Big Red One. The oldest and most notable US Army division. That's awesome Kerri.

Enjoy your Memorial Day holiday.

Thank you John!
