Hey Bud, it's been awhile! Glad to hear you're still working on your site and I hope it's doing well for you.
That being said, I recommend avoiding backlinking of anykind with the exception of making your own videos (youtube) and linking them to your site.
Backlinks generally get a bad rep nowadays and this is why WA's teaching doesn't cover it. I'd stay away from them and focus on building up content.

The type face on the list appears washed out. How to darken or make bold?
I reckon that some coding will be involved but unfortunately I would not be able to help. I your theme did not come with support included, maybe you can think of changing for another one. In my opinion, it is better to find the adequate help with a payed theme than keep getting regularly stuck with a free one.
