I wanted a census on whether it is best to have your site comments moderated or not? What are the benefits to you?

Years ago, I made the comments on my site moderated be

I agree with the others. Always have control over the comments. I had some very inappropriate ones a few years ago and since changing a few settings, I no longer experience this.

After I thought about it, I remembered how bad the spam was before so smacked myself on the head and left moderation on LOL.

Nancy

I also agree...best to keep control in your own hands.

Thanks. I have no idea why I started doubting it, but I am glad I asked.

Nancy

Sometimes when I look at a site that I haven't checked for a while, I see literally hundreds of spam comments. Fortunately, I can delete them all at once. I would NEVER allow unmoderated comments on a site.

Thanks Phil.

Nancy

Yep, agree with Andre here. You never want to allow people to just comment, you want to make sure you moderate all comments that are added to your website. :)

That is the way I have always done it, but for some reason when I was looking at a post to moderate I started wondering if I should do it differently.

Thanks Kyle.

Nancy

Always best to leave the moderation on you will still get spam once in a while and more so if you take it off.
Having it left on gives you full control of any comments you have spam or not.

Plus its for your safety as well.

That way you can choose if you accept them

That is what I was thinking, but I wanted to get others thoughts on it as well.

Nancy

All good but Kyle has responded as well.

Thanks, Abie,

I will check these out.

You're welcome, Nancy :)

Take WP optimize off, that not only slows your speed but also takes images off your media library,
When you delete WP optimize you will see your images re appear and speed will improve.

Below are two posts of mine related to speed issues.

Thanks for the resources. I will check these out.

Most welcome

Hello! I would check how much free space your computer has. Lots of times people have free space that you may be able to free up for speed issues. Like my computer does use up a lot of space being on the internet for a few years. I have been thinking about getting an external hard drive when I start noticing if it starts to slow down. Seems to be running correct for me now but I have been looking online at external hard drives. I look to see what I may need in the future.

No, I have plenty of free space, about 500 GB. It is definitely the website that Google speed verifies. I am not to the point of needing an external drive, yet anyway. And I have one if I do need it. I think they are good to have on hand. I use mine to transfer between my PC and laptop and keep a backup.

Hi Nancy,

First, to address the Google Ad Sense, yes, it does slow speed down, as I noticed. That's why I took it off of my site. It wasn't paying me much anyway. How long have you been using Google Ad Sense? Is there a way you can find a better ad network like Mediavine that is if you meet their traffic criteria,

Second, what plugin are you using for your images? I use the paid version of Imagify, and it works best for WebP images to optimize it.

Third, Google Tag Manager has that javascript, so yes, it does cause speed issues. Nothing can change that. I fixed my speed issues by changing themes. I am not sure which theme you are using. I used GeneratePress premium, then the free version, then switched to Kadence. It solved all my speed issues because it's less javascript-laden than GeneratePress.

I suggest looking at how many plugins you use and deciding whether Google Adsense is worth it. Are you making a lot from it> Are you getting a lot of traffic?

Thanks, Brenda.

I have not been using Ad Sense long, and I think I have convinced myself it is not worth it.

I tried several times and ended up switching WebP back to JPEG because it was affecting some of my images. Currently, I am using WP Optimize. I have tried several plugins with no luck, but WP seems to help. I will check out Imagify.

I wondered about GeneratePress. I used them a long time ago but ended my subscription. I may have to check into subscribing with them again because I am leaning toward the theme being one of the issues. I like theme, but I wonder if it is causing problems. I am using Affiliates Bloglet, which is a child theme of Blogrid. I like the theme layout but as I said, I think it may be part of the problem. I believe I will consider subscribing to GeneratePress again.

Thanks again. I will check out some of your suggestions.

Nancy

Nancy, WP Optimize, I think, is blacklisted on this hosting site. I do not use it for that reason. PNG and JPG are switched to WebP to reduce the LCP Issue, so that is why Imagify works the way it does. The paid version is not that bad. It's worth it. I can convert all my images on Imagify first; then, they're optimized inside my website, along with the featured images. The featured image is usually the one that has the most significant LCP issue. I got it down to 640x333 and optimized it to WebP, and it helped reduce my LCP to about less than two instead of over five or higher. I suggest you use the free version of GeneratePress rather than the Premium- the Premium is heavily JavaScript-coded. I wouldn't do it. The Kadence free version is great, too. Almost all of them are speed-wise now between 98 and 100 across the board from Google PageSpeed Insights. I am happy with it.

You can check Jay's live webinars @magistudios

Thanks, Abie,

These look like some good classes to watch. I will check these out and see if I can pick up some good tips.

Fabulous and you're welcome, Nancy :)

It really depends on what you see as the problem.

If the posts are excruciatingly bad or totally irrelevant, then you are probably better off getting rid of them and creating new ones.

Otherwise, it would be a shame to reduce your site's content and waste the previous work.

There's no reason you can't both revamp the existing posts and create new ones as well. They could reinforce each other.

True. I guess I never thought of it that way. I have just updated some of them and left it at that. However, for the ones I wanted to do a complete rewrite because the content was outdated, I added a new post. Some content was old when I finally started working on my website again. I have been updating and adding tables, bullet points, etc. Plus, I want to change the titles on many of them, so I was unsure if I should rewrite them or make an entirely new post.

Definitely some food for thought. Thanks!

Nancy

I am with Phil. Another point if you delete them you are creating a permalink that doesn't work. My question is how old is the site and how many articles do you want to delete

Not that many. The site is probably ten years old, at least. So, what about changing the Title? Do you think that is ok? I need to because I believe some of them need to be shorter and more specific.

Nancy

You can change the title without changing the slug/permalink. You can also use GSC to find out if a particular post in indexed or not. If it's not, changing the permalink is fine. Just submit the new url for indexing.

As Phil says use Google site kit to work out if a page is indexed. Kyle did a training on that last week if it is not indexed it is fine to change the tile and the permalink.

You may check out the resource above as well :)
