Is it recommended or a bad idea to submit my content to other blogs to try and get new followers, readers, backlinks, and promote my brand through other sites?
Right, I meant for instance submitting my content to similar sites that have more viewers to hopefully help gain a following.
Create new, but similar, content to post elsewhere. That way you won't be penalized by the search engines for having duplicate content on your site.

You can do it to promote your brand, that's fine. It can get you exposure in relevant groups. That's a great idea!
I would not do it for SEO backlinks though. If you do get links, i would just get a plain URL link to your website, and just double check that you are only posting these on relevant websites with real people behind them (no auto posting or article directories).

No, you should not be posting the same article to multiple websites. Maybe I misunderstood your question. They should be 100% unique. I thought you were going to be doing "guest blogging", ie writing a blog for someone else's website, then linking to your website in the author description.
That would be my only recommendation...100% unique articles to a legitimate, active website in your niche. Anything else like copy/pasting, spinning, or multiple submission type stuff should be avoided.

Yes. I use copyscape.com. It does cost money, but it's pretty cheap per article, and will even give you a percentage, if only a portion of the article is spun. works like a charm, and saves you a bunch of headache.
Excellent thanks Nathaniel you are so helpful! It makes me wonder though, with all the content online, isn't there always going to be some article somewhere that has similar words or concepts and is vaguely spun? What percentage threshold would be considered duplicate? Does Google give that info?
You are right...but I'm not exactly sure how copyscape works, or how plagiarism is detected, but in general, I think it's not really a problem. In a 1000 word article on the millions of topics out there, it's pretty tough to match those combination of words in such a way that it would look like a copy.
I guess theoretical, 1000 monkeys typing could stumble upon re-creating Shakespeare, but it's unlikely :)

I see you already have a good answer to your question. Just a small addition, there was a tutorial about selfie widget which you may put on sidebar, with a few sentences and a photo. I see many people are using it, rather elegant solution, it brings a personal touch with the audience: Creating a SELFIE Widget
No, that's fine. As long as you have other content on the page, this little blurb will not affect your rank. Alternatively, you can install an author-box plugin like Starbox (there are many others)
