This is the next in the ongoing presentation of Social Media Marketing statistics. Here are Twitter user statistics for the top 11 user countries. These are active user numbers based on May 2016.

If you recall in my last post re YouTube I said: "There are a lot of numbers bandied around the internet and they can be wildly different. The numbers depend on the method used to compile them." I would like to add that Statistics are like "keywords", often you need to "drill down" to find out what they really mean.

Two good questions were raise in the YouTube post that I will use as examples:

1. There are certain restrictions on YouTube in Germany. This will reduce the number of active German users .. but not necessarily those interested in your business,

2. Blocking of YouTube in China. This is probably the reason China does not show in the top 15.

So returning to Twitter:

1. According to Wikipedia, Twitter is also blocked in China and it is showing as the number 4 Twitter user. There is a disclaimer, of sorts, on the Wikipedia Page that says "Note that many of the sites listed may be occasionally or even regularly available, depending on the access location or current events." So interpret that as you may, it seems there is some access to Twitter in China but much more limited access to YouTube.

2. Indonesia is showing as number 3 on Twitter. This is a personal opinion: The Indonesian mobile/cell phone market has always been a "text" market, partly I think because of the Telcos pricing structure and partly because of the earlier level of market penetration of Blackberry messenger. So Twitter is a natural follow-on, I might be wrong, it is just a hypothesis.

So just consider that all statistics require a little bit of questioning and scrutiny if you are using them in business/marketing planning.
