Domain Name Listing Scam

Scammers come in all forms and from all places, here is a Domain Name Listing Scam that I received in my email inbox on 5th September for one of my Domains. I have edited my domain name and the admin details.

Note the details of the Scam:

  • There is no existing service or relationship I have of this type
  • Gives only one day for action (6 Sept)
  • Promotes FEAR .. losing your listing in search engines
  • Promotes a bogus service
  • Attempts to comply with US law by saying you are under no obligation while still carrying urgency and fear
  • Payment to a Fax number (seriously!)
  • No means of contact
  • From Domain does not exist

At a response rate of 1:10,000 at an average of $200 would give the Scammer $20,000 across 1,000,000 domains .. and a higher response rates the $$$ are huge!

This is actually a re-hash of the old business directories of the 1980's & 1990's .. in those days it was by letter (stamp and stationary) and they still made massive money so I suspect a 1:10,000 is a very, very conservative number.

Cheers, William.

We have to always be careful.

Thank you Lisa. Cheers, William.

Thanks for that William.

It is the old telephone yellow pages scam targeted at new businesses. Scammers make it look like a yellow pages business listing but change the name a bit to think you are getting a yellow pages listing.

Yes Glen .. Exactly! Cheers, William.

These guys will stop at nothing to get money from you. Thanks for the heads up.

These emails periodically do the rounds, out and out scams. Thank you for the heads up William.

Thank you Evan .. Cheers, William.

I've had 3 of these in the last week! Thanks for the reminder to others :)

Thanks Jude .. a lot of people are not aware. Cheers, William.

Hi, William. I also receive an email like this when I bought my domain name recently. They warned me that I must register something and pay so much. I just ignored the e-mail. I immediately recognised it as a scam.

Great Rika! Cheers, William.

I nearly fell for this until my WA education kicked in. Sadly it looks well made so I suspect many will fall for it.

Yes .. that is the issue! Thank you WA! Cheers, William.

I got the same email. I didn't know what to think, so I ignored it. It didn't come from anyone I knew. Thanks for solving the mystery.

Sharon

No problem .. Cheers, William
