Have You Fallen Out Of Love With Your Website ?

My intention is not to call anyone out or make you cringe and feel uncomfortable. However, I am going to ask the question. Have you fallen out of love with your website ?

It's easily done and there can be a whole host of reasons as to why that may happen.

  • You don't like the theme anymore.
  • You can't get it to do what you want.
  • You've made changes you no longer like.
  • You've run out of ideas for content.
  • You've had no sales yet.
  • You're not getting any traffic.
  • Your site speed is lousy.
  • You're just bored with it

Wow, those were just the first ones that came to mind. 'Off the top of my head', as they say (That one's for you Greg, is there an opposite to that one ?).

This post isn't going to be a 'solution fest'. That's not my intention. However, if any of the above does apply to you, then the best thing to do would be to ask the question here, using the search bar at the top of the screen.

The chances are, someone will have already gone down that road and if not, then I'm fairly sure there'll be oodles of advice coming your way.

As a 'mini-digression' I had cause to use the search bar this morning. I was looking to see if there was a plugin for finding broken links. Shall I expound on this ? Alrighty then, if you insist.

Rather than just updating my WA review I decided to replace it. Well, I say 'replace' loosely. I just copied the original one, that is still 'Site Content', and pasted it onto a new 'blank' content page.

Doing that, meant that I could change the title, which I never liked. Let's face it 'Spring Onions Don't Grow On Trees' isn't going to get me referrals, anytime soon.

So, after rewriting a fair sized chunk and changing the title, I was ready to publish. Stop ! Before that, I had to do some 'tidying up'. I didn't want the old post, so I deleted it. That meant that I had to remove it and all variations thereof, from Google Search Console. Easily done.

Then, I realised I would have to find any internal links I had, those that were directed to the now deleted review. Does that mean I would have to go through every single post, checking to see if I had a link that was now going nowhere ? Surely not.

That leads me back to my initial offering, which was my need for a plugin. Through the most excellent search bar, I came across Fix Error 404 Broken Links by Marion Black. Upon reading the article, it turns out that I didn't need a plugin after all. There are sites out there that will do it for you.

Thank you, Marion, I went on the recommended site and was duly provided with a list of all the redundant, links (as well as a few other anomalies, which we'll talk about another day).

Before taking action, I published the new and digitally remastered version of the review. Then I went and sorted out all of the links.

On and off, it took me most of the morning and apart from going down one particularly protracted rabbit hole, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It bolstered up resolve to go through all of my posts and give them a fresh lick of paint. If this idea appeals to you, then you might like to read 'Google sheets and why we should use them' as it may provide some assistance, should you decide to go on the 'update ' voyage.

The whole debacle, as much as it was satisfying, also allowed me to 'reconnect' with my site. It rekindled my love, somewhat. It wasn't that the burning flame of desire had been extinguished, more that it wasn't burning quite as brightly.

If you find yourself in a similar position, then it wouldn't do any harm to maybe go back to your first post and see if you can't inject some life into it. It never takes as long as you think it might and the end result will give you a huge sense of accomplishment.

As for all of the other reasons that were on the list, just tackle one at a time, and when you have resolved the issue, move onto the next, giving yourself a large pat on the back in the process.

That's me done for the moment. Yet again, this wasn't my intended foray but who am I to argue with myself about what I should or shouldn't write. Yep, I certainly told me.

Have a fantastic Friday and remember to stay safe, healthy and happy. There is most definitely light at the end of our current tunnel.

Twack Romero.

Hi, couple of things.

Yes, I did fall out of love with my website a little. I did it/used it while going through the training. Anyhow, I working on why new one now. I'm happy about that.

I picked up from your blog that you Deleted a Post? I'm super new to all this but I thought it wasn't beneficial to ever delete a post?

I'd appreciate your response as I'm sure like most things in life there are probably some variations on this that I didn't pick up?

Cheers, Louise

I'm probably the last person to give 'sound' advice when it comes to understanding all the various nuances that come with this whole website thing.
That said, if I remember some of the posts I've read concerning this, it might be that 'Google' prefers updating, maybe. Though how one can be punished when a post is no more, I do not know, maybe someone does.
So when the question is asked, I think the general consensus of replies will say to 'update' rather than 'delete' as an updated post is looked on more favourably in the eyes of Google. Does that make sense ? I don't think there is a negative backlash because of the deleted post. Maybe someone knows for definite.
I've already deleted a whole site with about thirty posts on, so my card might already be marked, my bad.

Always choose the update option rather than delete. To delete gives you an error message which isn't good for SEO

Thank you Catherine. Just out of interest, where does the error message have it's origin, if the post has been deleted, replaced with a new post with a different title, and the old url removed from all relevant consoles ?

Thank you so much for that, it's good to hear others sounding stuff out.

Oh, I see TheCatherine has replied too.

Jolly good, cheers Twack, Louise

I appreciate you clarifying that. Good to know.

Louise

I appreciate you clarifying that. Good to know.

No worries, there's always someone on hand that can throw some light on things.

A sign post, post there Twack.

One of the major reasons folks give up the ghost is that reason, they lose that spark disconnect from their website and drift away.

It happens so easily and it happens a lot.

Good sharing, your post may have saved many.

Doesn't it feel good when we stoke the fire.

Enjoy your weekend.

Alex

Thank you Alex, you too.
I totally agree, it feels very good. Hopefully I'll put together a proper schedule that includes regular visits to all the sites. Maybe that way, I'll be constantly 'stoking the fire' (such an apt phrase)

Load your sites onto the home screen of your phone carry them around with you.

Works a treat.

Ooo, nice idea, thank you Alex.

Hi Twack,

Glad you found a solution. I have a different approach. Since I only have 65 posts on my website, I feel I am still in growth mode. If I don't like a post I ignore it and just continue to write new, better ones using the experience I am accumulating.

Eventually I plan to write a new WA review that will become my new go to post to promote WA. Until I have at least 100 posts on my website I am not worried about old posts I do not like.

However, it is great to know that there is a neat way to fix broken links if I have a need to.

Cheers.

Edwin

Working along the lines that each new post is an improvement on the last, then I understand how your approach works.
I'm trying to solidify the foundation at present, while it's still relatively small.
The broken links program has saved me a boat load of time, that's for sure.
Thank you for dropping by Edwin, always a pleasure.

Your post hits it right on the head as to why I deleted the other website altogether! There wasn't enough on it to worry about anyway! Now I have a new domain and a clean slate, so we shall see what kind of mess I can make out of it THIS time around!

Enjoy your weekend, Twack!

Jeff

You too Jeff and thanks for dropping by. Every site I think 'This is the one, I'll do everything right' Somehow, that gets lost in translation.

Yes! I know the feeling, Twack! 🙄🙄

I fixed my time speed by removing the social plugin :) It did help great deal. Plus I optimised the size of featured images and my site speed is really good now, I'm happy.
However, re-reading and modifying the posts is an ordeal for me. Maybe one day...
Thanks for bringing this up, Twack.
Hope you are having another superfabulous day!
Lenka

Thank you Lenka, awesome job on getting your site speed up. Out of interest, which plugin was it ?
Everyday is superfabulous at the moment, long may it continue. Hope yours is too.

It was sassy social if I remember it correctly. To be honest, I think every social plugin makes the site slower, and also all the sign-up forms. For now I'm not going for anything like that, I'm happy the site is super fast.
True, every day is great if we make it great.

Good to know, thank you. I think I have Social Pug but in all honesty, I think it's Adsense slowing my site down, it's not horrendous butit's in the 80's and not the 90's like it used to be. Still, that's the trade-off.

I got rid of that one too Lenka, it caused my site problems.

Thanks for confirming that, Linda, glad I'm not the only one. At least this is sorted out.
