Error 404 Broken Links

One of my Wealthy Affiliate friends, musicman99 (https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/musicman99) asked me to help find and fix the broken links on his website. At his request I made a quick and dirty video of the process and put it on YouTube (unlisted) so he could watch and learn how to do it for himself. He has kindly given me permission to clean up the video and make it suitable for all our WA friends. This video is the end result.

The free online broken link checker is at http://www.brokenlinkcheck.com/

Thanks Weston for the inspiration to create this training video. And a special thanks to Loes for finding the website.

Thank you, all my Wealthy Affiliate friends, for watching.

As always I'm here to help you,

Hello.
I just made use of the broken link checker and I got a link with a 404 error but when I link the src link the page that displays show failed to open requested web page on your website and the remote website might be down or the webpage removed. I don't know how to go about this and also I have checked all the links on the actual page and they were all working properly so I am confused.

Hi again. I need your advice if you have time.
I'm following your advice and 'brokenlinkchecker' has returned 212 404 errors on my site.
Yesterday I had the pro version of my theme installed into my WP account by the theme designers as the zip file they sent would not install the file for me. (it took them 7 days to do it, so there must have been some problems with the theme.)
The installation stripped all of the formattings that I had done with the free version and basically left me with a bare text website.
I consulted with WA site support and they suggested that I reinstall from a WPclone backup I had done 2 days earlier.
I did this, and it was only partially successful as I now have all of these broken links. My site is only 1 month old and has 2 pages and 10 blogs. The blog widget in the right sidebar and the blog summaries in the front page all lead to 404 errors.
Is there a tick box somewhere in the WP settings that I need to activate for a quick fix?
Or do I need to go through each error separately and fix as you have shown in your training video?

Any of your wisdom would be most appreciated.
Kind regards
Andrew

The only way I know how to fix those errors is as I show in the video. I wish there was an easier fix.

Hi Marion. Many thanks for your reply.
I have just watched a training by Nathaniell. In it, he gave a solution that worked for me. He mentioned that sometimes when a website is moved the permalink settings get changed for some reason. This was the case for me, and once I returned the permalink setting to 'Post Name' my problems were solved. I rechecked with broken link checker and all is well.

Thanks for your consideration.
All the best,
Andrew

Thank you Marion. I just got a notification from Google telling me about a heap of 404 errors. I typed 404 into the search bar with WA and "Hey Presto" your blog came up. Jim
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Most 404s are within comments. I hope you can fix them soon.
Reply
JKulk1 Premium
Could only find one error in the posts and I fixed that. The comments seem to be coming through ok. I do use a plug in 'Flamingo' for inbound messages and address book. There are a heap of 404 error messages but they seem to be related to internal links with home page, accounts etc., I did notice that when I update in wordpress now, and go to 'Visit My Site' to check on the post, I can't return to wordpress from my web page. Jim

Hi again Marion. I'm sorry to keep bothering you with this. When I clicked on my user profile the screen shot you showed above reveals itself for only a split second and then opens up on another page where I can't complete the tasks you mention. Jim

That should not be happening. Have you contacted Site Support?

I contacted them and they had to make a new site map. Looks like my website will be starting from scratch. I managed to fetch and render most of my blogs to speed up indexing but Google thought I was a robot (I couldn't see half the pictures they asked me to look at). Anyway, I'll do the rest on the weekend . Jim
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
You don't need to do that, Jim. Just resubmit your new sitemap and request indexing. The googlebots will crawl your entire website.

Hi Marion.
Thanks for the training. I have just watched it and it was really easy to follow. thank you for creating it.
I was just wondering what your #1 tip is for fixing broken links in the comments area from website owners that ultimately close their websites?
I know this is a common problem for many members here.

When I follow the advice in the training I get this source code, but I am not sure how best to deal with it. Should I just delete the "pingback"?

<ol class="comment-list">

<li id="comment-52" class="trackback even thread-even depth-1">
<div class="comment-body">
Pingback: van cleef alhambra collana oro imitazione </div>

<ol class="children">

I have two options for you, Glenys. Manually delete every URL from the comments as you approve them or add this code to your Custom CSS

#commentform .comment-form-url {display:none;}

The code changes the comment form so the website URL field is not shown. Check out my website http://marionblackonline.com so you can see what my comment form looks like now.

I'm sorry, but I know zip about pingbacks.

Hi Marion,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly I really appreciate that.
My old theme only had the same x2 boxes that you do and now I can appreciate how I ended up with only a tiny amount of broken links. This really was a blessing for me but I didn't know it at the time.

I changed it over to a "three box" theme because senior members here at WA were complaining that they couldn't leave their website in the comments field. I can certainly appreicate how the benefits of only having x2 fields for someone to fill in.

Comments are interesting aren't they? You need them, but they are a blessing and a problem at the same time.
Thanks again for all your help. Cheers

Hold down the Ctrl key (Command key on a Mac) and then press the other key. This is a keyboard shortcut that you'll come across time and again.

Great training Marion. My question or rather concern is, when I click on the src, it comes up with a page showing an error (see below), and won't show me what the source is so I can find where the 404 error is.
The page opens to say:
'Failed to open requested web page on your website
The remote website might be down or the webpage removed'
Do you know how I can access the source please?
I know I have 13 errors that need to be fixed, so I am hoping to find a way to fix them.
Please Help!

Reply
MarionBlack Premium
As the 'src' is not available click on the Page Where Found URL and you'll at least narrow down your search to the individual posts where the broken links occur.

The problem seems to stem from the way you are pasting in the link URLs. Revisit the lessons on adding affiliate links so you can make sure you won't be adding broken links in the future. Whenever you create a link on your website check each link individually using Preview to make sure they work as they should before you publish the post.
Reply
katmac Premium
Okay, thanks for that. I'll re educate myself on how to add the links properly and will find the link on each post. Thanks for taking the time to find out what the problem is for me, I really appreciate it.
Heart hugs,

HI Marion
I have taken out all the links in the comments (I think) now I am going to take out the pretty links as they seem to be causing grief also. Will let you know how I go.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Magie, do you have spaces between words in your pretty links? Pretty Links must follow the same rules as all hyperlinks - words should be separate by hyphens not spaces. e.g. yourdomain.com/pretty-link
Reply
Magieken Premium
I will check it out and let you know.
Reply
Magieken Premium
It seems every page is coming up with a 404 error and I still can't get into the code to fix it (or finish it off completely) whichever comes first.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Is the problem in the menu? The menu appears on every page. Once you fix it then it's fixed for all pages.
Reply
Magieken Premium
How do I find if it is in the menu?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Search for distinct broken links only (not every instance) and you'll be able to see when you look at the results where the problems are. Maybe you need to watch the video again.
Reply
Magieken Premium
I have contacted link checker and they are looking into why I can't get the source code to come up. They say there is an incompatibility problem between my site and the link checker. Will just have to wait and see what they come up with.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I've had a look at your broken links on http://affiliatewealthonline.com

The first 3 broken links are because you have not yet set up your social share plugin. The 4th is a link to your other website. Perhaps you changed the URL.

Hi Marion, I have followed this training and my site is a mess. So far I have 52 broken links. When I go to the url the page displays OK but when I try source I get a "Failed to open requested web page on your website The remote website might be down or the web page removed"
I am also getting a lot of Bad Host messages in the response column.
Does this mean my site is terminal and I should turn off it's life support?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
LOL

Most of your 404s are from comments left by people who have abandoned their websites. "Bad Host" means that the website is no longer "live".

The trick is to go through all the comments on your site and use "Edit" to remove the websites.

Let me know if this fixes the problems.

Thanks so much, very helpful. why do some of my broken links say "bad host"?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
The "bad host" links are the ones that no longer exist. Either the entire website no longer exists or just a particular page or post has been deleted. With bad host links the best thing to do is just delete the link.
Reply
Bwainhaus Premium
so I looked at the src and it is highlighting the comments on the bottom so can i just ignore that?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
If you ignore it then it won't go away. I always remove the URL links from comments before I approve them.

I removed the URL links, there are no links thats why I am confused as to why it says bad host. maybe I wll take a screenshot of the src and send it to you

ok thanks. also I think one of my urls for one of my posts must have gotten changed (i changed the name of the post so I'm not sure if thats what did it) how do I get rid of it so it doesn't come up in google?
This is the URL http://topstrollerguide.com/guide-to-choosing-the-right-stroller I put a page for people to redirect to my homepage but how do i get rid of it?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Make a pretty link called guide-to-choosing-the-right-stroller and make it link to your home page. Then you can delete the page and resubmit your sitemap. Google's crawlers won't be able to find it any more.
Reply
Bwainhaus Premium
Thanks. Is pretty links a plugin?
What do you mean delete the page? I don't know how to get to that page. Should i delete the post that used to have that url and repost it? How do I submit my sitemap? Sorry for so many questions, I'm so a beginner.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes, Pretty Links is a plugin.

If you're just starting out then it won't matter. Just delete the post. Google will find your sitemap in its own good time.

And don't worry about the Error 404s until later. It's not that important just yet.

Just follow all Kyle's lessons in order and the rest will fall into place in time.

Bwainhaus Premium

Hi Marion, thanks for the info. I just checked with the brokenlinkchecker and it says:
www.thewisdomfactory.net/ main page redirects to a different domain: thewisdomfactory.net
You should check thewisdomfactory.net instead!

How should I understand that? It is exactly the same domain.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes, it is the same domain. But when someone types in www. before the domain name it actually gets redirected to the website without the www. Eventually the www will become obsolete and no-one will use it any more. So do the check without the www and you'll see the proper results.

Thanx Marion.
Tried this and got 4 errors.
One is a google address on my privacy policy page - that Kyle gave us during training... should be easy to fix

The other 3 are from commenters gravatars - what can I do about those? I'm also getting a Bad Host server response on the gravatar ones...
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I'm not sure about the gravatars Cate. I thought that if they didn't have a gravatar then the mystery man would show up (or whatever you've chosen to replace the mystery man). I remove the websites from comments so that I don't get 404s for expired websites.

Remove the link URL. "Bad host" means that the website no longer exists. So it's not linking to a "page not found" it's linking to a "website not found".

All I can suggest is to watch the video again and follow along with trying to fix your own 404s. You don't need to understand HTML, it just shows the words you have written with some extra code around them. What you're looking for is your own words so you can find the broken links. Ignore the gobbledegook.
