Menus are navigation links that are commonly found at the top. But, there are some menus as well that you can find at the right or left side of the website.

On this tutorial, I will teach you how to create your custom Menus for your website.

First, you should have already made some pages andposts that you can use for the menu items.

To get started, here are the steps to create your custom menu.

1. On the Main Navigation Menu, click Appearance and select Menus.

2. Click Create a New Menu link.

On the text box of Menu Name, type the name of your menu. This is to identify the kind of menu you want to use on your website. For instance, I named this menu as Menu 1. Then click Create Menu blue button on the right side of it.

3. Look at the left side of it and you will find tabs like Pages, Posts, Custom Links, and Categories. If you will click the down-arrow on it, it will show its options.

  • On Pages, tick the box of the pages you want to include on your menu items.
  • On Posts, tick the box of posts you want to include on you your menu items.
  • On Custom Link, type the URL of the link you want to include on your menu items and write the name that will appear on your menu on Link Text.
  • On Categories, choose the categories you have used on your posts which you want to appear on your menu.

After choosing your menu items, just click the Add to Menu button to appear it on the Menu Structure.

4. On the Menu Structure, you can drag and drop the arrangement of your menu items.

5. On the Menu Setting, you can choose the Display Location where you want to appear your menu.

  • Header Menu - topmost part of your website.
  • Footer Menu - footer is the lowest part on your website. This is where you can find the copyright labels of your website. On this menu you can set up your terms and agreement menus, disclaimers, and policies.

You can ignore this option if you don't want your menus to appear on these locations. You can still make your menus appear on the sidebar of your website (left or right) with the use of Widgets.

6. When you're done, just click Save Menu.

How to use Widget for Custom Menu?

If you want your menus to appear on the left or right side of your website, you have to use Widgets.

Widgets are used to include more functions on your website. For more information about Widgets, please refer to Lesson 13 on this tutorial.

To use Widgets for Custom Menu, here are the steps:

1. On the Main Navigation Menu, click Appearance, then Widgets.

2. Drag the function Custom Menu and drop it to the right side. This is how your sidebar will appear on your website.

3. On the Custom Menu option, type your Title and select the menu you want to use on this widget on Select Menu option.

4. When done, click the Save button.

So, there you have it, you just made your menu for your website.

Tasks 0/5 completed
1. Make Pages named "About Me", "Contact", "Privacy Policy" for Menu items
2. Create your main menu and name it "My Menu", insert "About Me" & "Contact"
3. Create new menu and name it "Widget Menu", then menu items are your Categories
4. Show "Widget Menu" on the sidebar through Appearance ->Widgets
5. Create a footer menu with "Privacy Policy" page on it.

I created a second page. When I went to the different pages, and used the parent button - the pages are switched around. Is it supposed to be like that?

No, I have not created a sub-page yet as I do not have enough details to do that. I need specifics and if it's too simple - it doesn't have enough information. I've read the directions a bunch of times and I still don't get it.

Thanks Carl for letting me know this, I stand corrected.

When importing the back-up files (.xml) start importing the "All Content" file. Tutorial updated now.

The "Media" file back-up is for emergency purposes only if in case the "All Media" file didn't show the media / pictures on your posts or pages. So, to make sure of that, you can import the "Media" file after importing the "All Content" file.

Thanks for having this tutorial, I'm glad it's becoming useful to my fellow members here.
