Yes, there are requirements to build a Website and here are the three most important things you should have.

1. Website Hosting

Website Hosting is an available space that you can use to host your website files. It's like the hard disk drive where you can store all your website files online.

The difference between Website Hosting and Website Builder is that Website Hosting consist only of one entity which is the (1) storage aspect, while the Website Builder consists of two entities which are the, (1) storage, and (2) the tools for building the website.

Website builder's tool for building a website uses different platforms. It can be a Drag & Drop, or One-Click WordPress Install like here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Right now, there are lots of Website Builders that you can choose. And Wealthy Affiliate offers both free members and premium members the ability to host websites. Two (2) websites for Free members and (50) fifty for Premium members.

2. A Domain Name

Before you can have a website, you need to acquire a Domain Name.

A Domain Name is your website's address. It is the URL address people use to find your website. It is the name which the users type into the address bar of website browsers (like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer or Opera) to visit your website.

A Domain Name is composed of a name and a suffix after the dot. Suffixes indicate which Top Level Domain (TLD) it belongs to, it is the category of your website.

Here are some Top Level Domains or TLDs that you can use for your websites according to the purpose it serves.

  • .com - is used for commercial businesses and is widely used by most website owners
  • .gov - is used for government agencies' website
  • .edu - is used for schools, universities, and educational institutions
  • .org - is used for organization mostly non-profits
  • .net - is used for network organizations
  • .info - is used for informational websites but is very uncommonly used by website owners

Choosing a good domain name for your website is like no other than naming your baby. You want something that is unique which will fit your baby's characteristics. Same thing with choosing a good domain name. You want something memorable and unique that identifies your website among others of the same kind to be easily remembered by the market you want to target.

PRICE: There are no FREE Top Level Domain names available on the internet. But you can find FREE subdomain names under the company's domain names. For example, www.myname.siterubix.com. Domain Name Registration at Wealthy Affiliate range from $13.00 to $15.00 a year with no extra cost or hidden charge, and all features are already included like Privacy, SSL, email addresses, and many more which other Domain Name Registration companies will charge you for additional cost.

3. WordPress Software

Now that you have the space on the internet which is called Website Hosting and a name called Domain name, you are now ready to set-up your WordPress website.

Website builders that uses WordPress platform will provide this to you already. It will set-up your WordPress software automatically, so you don't need to install the WordPress software manually.

At Wealthy Affiliate, you can build your website automatically through SiteRubix.

Step 1: Click the SiteRubix tab on the left panel, then click the SiteBuilder option.

Step 2: Follow the following steps on SiteBuilder as follow. (1) Choose the kind of website you want to build, (2) then, what domain name you want to use, (3) the title of your website, and (4) what design or theme you want for your website.

If you are a FREE member of Wealthy Affiliate, choose On a free domain option on Step 1 and then type your preferred sub-domain name on Step 2.

But if you are a PREMIUM member and already bought a domain name, choose On a Domain I Own option on Step 1 and select your preferred domain name on Step 2 .

If you prefer to install your WordPress software manually, you have to download the WordPress software and install it manually on your Website Hosting account (read the difference between website hosting and website builder on list #1).

Though installing WordPress software on your hosting account is easy, I would prefer choosing a website builder instead of awebsite hosting. It has an automatic install program for WordPress software just like here atWealthy Affiliate (they call it One-click WordPress install) so you can avoid errors while installing it.

When you are done installing and setting up WordPress on your hosting provider or on Wealthy Affiliate through the 1-click WordPress install, you can now login to your WordPress account and start building your website.

Tasks 0/2 completed
1. Think of a Domain Name for the website that you want to build.
2. Build your website at Wealthy Affiliate.

I created a second page. When I went to the different pages, and used the parent button - the pages are switched around. Is it supposed to be like that?

No, I have not created a sub-page yet as I do not have enough details to do that. I need specifics and if it's too simple - it doesn't have enough information. I've read the directions a bunch of times and I still don't get it.

Thanks Carl for letting me know this, I stand corrected.

When importing the back-up files (.xml) start importing the "All Content" file. Tutorial updated now.

The "Media" file back-up is for emergency purposes only if in case the "All Media" file didn't show the media / pictures on your posts or pages. So, to make sure of that, you can import the "Media" file after importing the "All Content" file.

Thanks for having this tutorial, I'm glad it's becoming useful to my fellow members here.
