So that's the strategy I've been using recently, and I've grown my follower count from basically 0 to 1000 in 10 days.
Here are just a few last tips from me to improve your overall pinning performance and then a quick snapshot of my results.
Design Matters
Pinterest is driven by visuals. If your pin doesn't look good, it won't get traction.

You don't need to get too fancy. A simple colour wash over a background image with bold text overlay can work. Or an image with a coloured text box below it works fine. Here are some examples of mine:

My Results
It is genuinely worth your time to build a social media following. My website traffic is increasing and becoming more consistent as a result of concentrating some effort on Pinterest. Its still early days so I won't post any traffic graphs just yet, but stay tuned for the future! I've also noticed that my visitors from Pinterest are more engaged - they spend longer on my pages than my other traffic and generally visit more than one page before leaving. These are good signs.
