Back to Work and Other Worries

Hey everyone,

Today is my 2 month anniversary at Wealthy Affiliate and I thought I would share what's going on with me these past few days.

As most of you know I'm on maternity leave from work, which ends at the end of the month. I moved across the country this summer so I put in a job transfer and waited to hear back. So I get a call a few days ago from someone in human resources asking me to come in for "orientation" and I use that term loosely. I wasn't told much more than that. I was given an address and told who to ask for when I got there.

That was 3 days ago and I've been going there daily ever since to "orientate". In all fairness because I don't know their system it is best that I go in ahead of time and see what there is to see. But there's this part of me that feels like I'm just cheap labor while they try to figure out what to do with me and which run to put me on.

My job is in the food industry and I drive a truck to distribute our products to businesses in the surrounding areas. These trucks all have established "routes". These routes all get "bid on" when one comes available. And then they are awarded by seniority. If you have no seniority you are the "gopher" as I like to call it. Instead of working one route, you work all the routes in a given area when the regular drivers have their days off. And because I am low man on the totem pole at work right now, I will be the gopher working everybody else's route. And the best part? They put me in a distribution center outside of town. Thirty five minutes outside of town and the distribution route is even further out into that area as well.

So for the last 3 days I haven't been "orientating", I've basically been on a 2 man run with a distributor doing his job with him. I've had to last-minute juggle my home life to work around it. I have a daycare spot reserved but that's not until the end of the month. So the teenage daughter has had to stay home from school to watch the baby so I can go to work. And each day they say "come for 7:30 and we will go from there". So I've been driving out to Timbuktu in my car that isn't all that reliable, and working until whenever we are done. I haven't made it home before 6:30 pm in the last 3 days.

So how is this supposed to work?

- My daycare doesn't start until the end of the month and they are aware of that

- My daycare closes at 5:30 pm and it's $1.00 a minute if you're late

- My car is unreliable and winter is coming

- This city has terrible traffic problems trying to get in or out

- This opening is the only one they have until February's retirement "shuffle"

So now I'm trying to figure out if I can even go back to the same workplace at the end of the month. They sure aren't making it easy to continue with them and so I may be job-hunting at the end of this month instead of actually working. It's so frustrating!

I'm taking the weekend to re-assess what I need to do for my online business and make the decision if I should go back to my workplace or find another job. While I am trying to earn money online I still need to earn some "real life" wages.

I don't want to waste my company's time if I can't fit my life into their schedules. I need to work but I also need to consider the complexities of their offer right now and it doesn't look good. So unless a miracle happens this weekend I will be a job hunter soon and on the unemployment line soon after that. Being unemployed is terrible and I don't want to go that route, but the offer my company has brought to the table doesn't look like the right one for me at this time in my life. I am however staying positive and keeping focused on a bright future.

Have a great weekend Lovelies,

Until next time...think and grow rich you guys :)

Guess you will have to go back to your old company but keep looking for something you will enjoy. Feel for you Lori but hopefully soon you won't need to work for anyone!

I want to be my own boss so badly it hurts :(

Hi Lori.
You seem to have painted yourself into a corner and are finding it difficult or impossible to cope. However, whatever the circumstances behind your decision it is your decision and your responsibility. From what you said in this post, you have a new baby as well as an older daughter and they are your first concern and you will do whatever you have to, to protect them. It's not a choice. It's what moms do. The only thing I can do to help you is to badly quote St. Ignatious Loyola who said:-
"May God give you the courage to change what you can,
The strength to accept that which you cannot change,
and the Wisdom to know the difference!"
May the force be with you.
Ian

Oh Ian you have made me feel so much better than when I wrote this blog on Friday. I know we will be okay in the end. It's the uncertainty that gets to me so much. And that last line "may the force be with you" is priceless :) Thank you.

Lori I barely know you but I empathise with what you're going through and if a few words can give you a lift, you're more than welcome. By the way, if you ever need what we Brits refer to as a 'kick up the **** or **** or ******' then I can do that too :-)

Hi Lori Really feel for you . I think the predicament you find your self will face many who are on this journey of creating an online business . The need to have the day job to pay the bills . So you are not alone we are with you all the way . I am sure things will work out for you . Have a lovely weekend .
Alexander

Thanks Alex...something will come up that will be right for us as a family I am sure of that. And I am definitely sure that I want work dilemma's like these need to be in my past and not my future. If I need the day off because my kids are sick? No problem...I work from home :)

It will happen. Have a great weekend Alex (love that name by the way)

Lori- I feel for your predicament. I realize that your responsibilities require you to have a job, but at what cost to you, and for what real return. Starting anywhere else at "entry level" does not produce any better solution, except for less wear and tear on vehicle, and perhaps less penalties with child care. You have demonstrated drive to be able to be a leader, to work for yourself. I pray that it is time to make your right decision, no matter how scary it may appear. All the best. Larry

It's a sign of the times that the world we live in has become so complicated even though our lives are "supposed to be so much better" in fact, all the stress of time constraints, childcare and just keeping body and soul together and above the poverty level are sending people to early graves. I will get over this hurdle, just not sure how high it is yet Larry. Thanks for the pep talk and I hope you don't wear those glasses all the time lol :)

Only when I am using my laptop. I've worn out several sets of eyes at WA

ah you have one of those chairs that goes over everything! Does it really manage well? My mom would love one of those when she makes the decision to go to a motorized chair. She's been in a wheelchair for 41 years now and she's still wheeling herself around but her arms are wearing out.

My totally awesome mom and her racing chair :)

Why is your mam in a wheel chair Lori? My dad was too, he had his leg amputated.

Your mom is indeed awesome, a super star and an inspiration. The tracked chair is certainly liberating - I use it when I get a chance, for outdoor adventure, for places I could not normally get to.
I mostly use my power chair, a three wheel scooter, and at home, two wheelchairs, one on each level with a stair glide elevator between. Pass my praises to your mom ~ she has raised a strong, caring daughter. Larry

Hi Olive,

Sorry to hear about your dad. My mom was in a car accident when I was eleven months old. She has been a paraplegic ever since.

Thank you for the kind words Larry. Would you mind if I show your picture to my mom? She's still very active and she might be inspired by your picture. And you're right, my mom raised me and my sister right lol. When my mom had her accident there was a long recovery process and of course adjusting to life in a wheelchair. My sister and I were just teeny-weeny when she finally came home from the hospital. Everyone wanted her to live at home. But she got us an apartment and raised us independent on her own.

Oh dear, that's awful! She must be such a strong woman though. Gosh, you really don't know what's around the corner!

Feel free to encourage your mom. My profile might help her too. No such thing as "confined to a wheel chair" (the very thought of such words drives me harder).
Think deeply this week to find your passion. Your answers will come.

Hello thischick - you rank 38 after only 2 months? w0w MoM. I've had a part time warehouse job since 2008 and is only 5 miles from home (12 min drive) and i love it... Found that job and a couple other gigs on CraigsList... You have to scan the jobs frequently every day to beat the competition... Now I'm retired and building a WA base to supplement my Navy pension... Best wishes to you little lady, we're all praying for you... Danielll

Thanks Daniel for those encouraging words...never thought of craigslist. Thanks for the idea :)

Here's hoping and praying it all works out best for you and your family. :)

Whew Lori, There's got to be a way out of all that. It sounds like a bad dream. What kind of car do you have and do you have a reliable
repair service.
Bless your daughters heart for staying home but it's tough to keep her out of school.
I wish I new a way to put your skills to work. I'm sure there are businesses that could use what you know.

You are in my prayers,
Marty

I have a 1998 Chevy Lumina...can't afford a car from anywhere in the 2000's I'm afraid. Looks like a cop car and freaks people out when I drive past ha ha...

The teenager cannot stay home from school so that's why this weekend decision-making is in order. Perhaps a change of job is best for us all in the long run. We will see.

Thanks for reading Marty :)

What type of perks you get for getting likes

Wise decision to take the weekend and reflect Lori. Sometimes I find doing this not only clears my mind but a solution so simple becomes apparent so easily that I cannot fathom how I missed it earlier.

Everything will work out ... it always does.

ROCK ON!
E

Yes reflection is a good thing...I don't want to get on board with something and find myself in over my head after a month. But then maybe I just haven't found a solution to my particular problem yet but it will come. Thanks for reading :)

My best to you.

E

Insh'Allah everything a be alright Thischick aka Lori
