After Holloween Fright!
Yesterday I received an email from one of my affiliated companies that said they were discontinuing their affiliate program until after the first of they year, but not to worry, their going to make it all better (Good for me 'cuz their banner ads would not show in the side menu for me). I went to my site to remove their links and all worked well for the first page.
Then I went to another, removed the links, hit update and....BZZZZT!! My computer totally went blank for a second, came back on and gave me the HTML screen (TEXT?) that just flashed for a second, and then the screen saying that my computer had been shut down improperly and that my world as I knew it was going to come to an end (unless I restart in one of the following ways...) in 10...9...8...etc!
I hurried and hit the "Restart in Safe Mode" option and then shut it down "correctly". But was everything OK? After looking up to make sure my ceiling wasn't about to come crashing down on my head, I restarted, ran my FULL virus scan (took 2 damn hours!), and went back to check on things (looking for billowing smoke emitting from all ports).
I logged in here to see if I still could log in, and so far so good. But I'm not looking forward to removing more links anytime soon. Don't know what happened or why. No virus' found and everything seems OK now, but I think I'll wait to remove anymore links for now. They can have the free advertising if it means that I can keep my computer/site in one piece!

I'm not touching them again until I can back everything up. Which I don't know how to do. My daughter is going to help when she's done with her essay. I tried to back it up this morning but I have to disable my antivirus first. I'm backing up everything. Not just WA, just in case
There's a plugin, WP-DB Backup, you can schedule a backup or create a manual one and even download it to your computer. After that I'm not sure how you restore it, but it's easy to back it up. Which reminds me... time for a backup.
Great! I'll look into it after I back up my whole computer. I ain't touchin' nutin' till then.Right now I'm "more nervous than a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs", when it comes to changing anything else before then! Thanks for the info.
OHH! Sneaky. An Incognito and stealth attack. With my luck, it would just come back in bite me 10xs worse. Sigh! I guess I'll just let it run it's course. >8{
I know it's not funny on your end Terry, but you sure crack ME up!!!
( not the issues, just your cool way with words ) XX :-) Jon
I can laugh now. It doesn't bug me that much. It's just that "What NOW" feeling that really irks me!
Well Terry, if it's any consolation, my PC freaked out on me for 2 days. We scrapped yesterday, I called a truce & restored it to last saturday. Stupid computers anyway!!! :-) Jon
It may be totally NOT connected, but I'm sure you were scared spitless, Terry! I've had weird things like that happen and I just about choked on my own breath! Not everyone can just rush out and buy a new computer, plus. . . there's tons of stuff on this one. When I switch up, I want my files! Glad it worked out for you! You can now return to breathing normally.

These things happen with computers every now and then. Luckily with Wordpress, a lot of content you write, even if it's not saved is actually saved. I think you'll be ok Terri.
That is good for the sites, not so good for me, if my whole computer crashes irreparably! THAT would mean no Christmas card for you, young man! >: p
A flash drive will fix this potential scenario :P and will provide me with the Christmas card :D
C.O.D. on the Christmas card >x { I have a flash drive. I just need to disable my antivirus (I think) so I can use it to back things up. I got an error message this morning when I tried it. And I'm waiting on my daughter to get done with her essay to help. Yes, I'm that pathetic, so shush! ;)
