Woken up by a 4.9 aftershock.

We have had 20 aftershocks of over 4.5 since the massive earthquake here on Nov. 30th which was a magnitude 7.0. There have been over 6,0000 aftershocks recorded and we are averaging 10 per hour but we only feel a few per day now. This one was strong enough to wake us up. It was a 4.9. We had a 5.0 a few days ago as well.

What used to be an "earthquake" is now an "aftershock" since these are all occuring in the same area as the last one and we are still in the period of heightened activity following the large one. It is reported the aftershocks will last for months to come and it could even take a year for the local earthquake activity to settle down to a normal level.

Our poor building is full of cracks and it seems like the shaking will never end. These ones are not scary themselves but we are always wondering if we will have another big one when we hear the rumble coming. The chances of that are decreasing however and that should not happen. The chance of another one of the same magnitude occuring each week is only 1 in 1,000 now. The chance of a substantial quake of a 6.0 is 1 in 100 and the chance of smaller quakes like we have been getting is 99 out of 100!

I have one more busy week to complete at work and then things should settle down for me. I don't know yet if I will have to come in to work this weekend.

I am optimisitc that 2019 will be a better year.

I am still getting a few sales and added a new post to my site last week. That was the only one I have added since Novemeber! I hate to admit that but life has been quite shaken up lately between holidays, this rush at work, other obligations and jobs and the earthquake.

I hope you have a great New Year.

Jessica

Jessica,
Girl, you are so brave I am afraid I would be
selling everything I owned and moving away
from there :(

I am a person who would not even know what
to do in an earthquake situation - call me a
chicken but I would have headed for the hills.

I respect that you handle this so well and bravely
and deal with all life throws at you. Bless you and
your family honey you deserve some peace soon.
Susan

I can't imagine having to experience earthquakes and aftershocks.

Wish you the best in 2019.

Your resilience is hard for us to understand, out here in places where the ground doesn't move and we've no experience with avalanches, tsunamis or hurricanes. I hope I can somehow channel your strength to appreciate the insignificance of the problems that seemed so massive a couple months ago. I'm in awe of your ability to deal with a shaky earth and cracking home while work and other demands pull and push you around.

Seems to me that my challenges are pretty trivial. Thanks for that Jessica. Please keep letting us know that you are OK and that you are back at your business while all this still goes on. Congratulations for the post you got out despite all the shaking below you and the turmoil around you... We really have no excuse at all - at least I don't.

I wondered how you were doing - thanks or the update. Good to know that your sites will just keep chugging along, ready for you to add more content when you are ready, but nicely aging in the meantime.

Life can throw us curveballs indeed, but you are taking it all in stride. 2019 will be better!

Jessica, it sounds like it would be very "rattling" to be in a place that is experiencing so many aftershocks.

I felt a few aftershocks from an earthquake when I was stationed in Afghanistan. I have decided that earthquakes scare me more than anything because there is absolutely nothing that you can do to prevent them. Unless you completely left the area, you can't avoid them either. In your case, it isn't feasible to leave your home, rental properties and work for over a month.... Your family is in my prayers.

p.s. How are the cats holding up? I'm sure that the aftershocks must bother them also.

Jessica, you are in my thoughts and prays. What you are going through makes some of the daily ups and down look small.
Sandy

I hope that you and yours are safe and in good health. I will keep you and your family in my daily prayers. Blessings to you.

Hey Jessica, look up my Nephew. He's the local reporter for NPR. When the big one happened he was the only one still on the air for several hours while you all dealt with the aftermath. Zacharia Hughes.

Oh I hear him all the time on the radio! That is neat!

Yes, it has been quite hectic around here! We have a lot of damage to our building and the property we manage.

No apologies, You're doung just surviving.
Hope everything work out for you!

Maxine

Thank you Maxine!

Thanks for sharing, Jessica. I'm fortunate that here in Maryland we don't experience too many earth quakes.

Thanks Roger. It has been interesting.

No problem, Jessica.
