I just use SumoMe scroll box which is not quite in your face seems to work quite well

I use only a couple pop-ups very unobtrusively and never over the text. One stays on the bottom when scrolling up, and one slides in from the side on the bottom of the page. When I'm reading and a popup covers the text, I switch off.

Pop-ups, to me, are just slamming the door on someone's face as they try to enter and enjoy your site. I have no idea why people are still using them. Same for floating opt-ins.

I've taken them off my site and instead to an opt-in on the side the stays with the viewer as they scroll down. I'm also adding and have heard this works well where you do a photo/ad/banner within the post and when the person clicks it, you link them to a landing page to opt-in.

Yes I use exit popups on my your.siterubix dot com it pops up when people are hitting the browser to leave and on my workathomefuture dot com also when people are leaving
