Am I coachable? You decide

So this is the question I get asked a lot when I talk to
people in network marketing that I want to learn from and study under. I also
have got asked it a lot when I was talking to people in Empower Network. One
person I told the story I am going to tell you, never did respond to my
message. So I take that as she doesn’t want someone as good as me. What I have
found though are that some jobs I am over qualified for by just being who I am.
They aren’t looking for a go getter, a person that wants more. They are looking
for just the average person who will come in and do their job and go home. Well
that isn’t me. So here goes the story, and you tell me if I’m coachable.

My money path

In 2010 I started my investment education. I went to an
Investools seminar and learned about the stock market. Then in 2011 I was
introduced to Robert Kiyosaki and the Rich Dad Company. I signed up for a 3 day
stock market training but through circumstances I had to reschedule it for a
later time. During that time however I started studying Real Estate Investing,
and really decided that is what I wanted to get into first. 2012 I really
studied and went to a 3 day training on Real Estate from Rich Dad instead of
the stock market. 2012 was the year of study, and then in 2013 I wanted this to
be the year of action. So I went and even attended another 3 day Real Estate
training by Fortune Builders “Flip This House.” In January I went and met with
a Realtor and wanted to start the process of buying a house. I then met with a
mortgage broker and he directed me to a company to start building my credit.
Because I didn’t have any.

Credit Building

I started building my credit through the company and saved
enough for a secured credit card as well to build my credit and have been using
it responsibly since I got it. I am going to be meeting my own Rich Dad who is
very successful in Real Estate and I do hope he will teach me how he does what
he does.

I have a TON of books. All but about a half dozen of Rich
Dad, ones by Robert G Allen, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Deepak Chopra,
Michael Beckwith. Bios that include, Oprah, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Apollo
Ohno, Gary Norton, (Creator of Silverwood, where I work now).

My horse journey

In 2009 I got my first horse. He was 16 at the time. I
started watching horse training on TV then I would go out and try it. I knew so
little I tell people the only thing I knew was what a lead rope did and that’s
because of its name. I truly knew nothing about horses, being safe around horses,
how to work with horses, NO-THING.

After about 4 months of working with my horse Sky. (That is
where my username comes from) I felt like I was ready to take on an un-started
horse. (A horse that doesn’t know anything) In January of the following year,
2010 I got the chance to purchase one and so I did. In September of that year I
got him at the house, along with the 2 Arabs as well we picked up for free. All
3 of them were un-started and I only had about a year of experience at this
point. Well I worked with Little Guy, (The one I got in January) and started
him. It went really well. I did ground work with the girls.

In 2011 I really didn’t have time to do much sadly with
them. But in 2012 I then went and did a 100 day challenge with Windy. I worked
with her 100 days in a row. Now some days I would have to miss, (Like for the
Real Estate Training) But I would just double up on my training before or after
that to make up for it. Then working 11-12 hours a day in the summer and
getting off at 9:30, 10:30 at night and coming home and working with her.

In September of that year I started riding Snickers. And
getting her trained up. Now during this time as well in 2010 I went and saw
Clinton Anderson in Redmond, OR all the way from CDA, ID. In June of 2010 I went
to go see Chris Cox and a clinic and learn what he does. In 2011 I went over to
Tennessee to see Clinton Anderson, Chris Cox, and Pat Parelli compete against
each other in a colt starting competition. In 2012 I went over and volunteered
at a tour from Clinton Anderson in Montana. I have again, TONS of books on
horses, horse training, etc.

In March of 2013 I went and bought a farrier DVD hoof
trimming series. Bought the tools and then went out and started trimming my own
horse’s hooves.

And in the month of May I bought a Foundation Training from
Clinton Anderson with his mentor Ian Francis about getting your horse ready for
competition.

I have about 4 books going on right now that I am reading
all on different things. Haven’t been able to read much because I want to spend
my time building my website and on WA, plus I don’t get much free time with
work right now. Oh, and don’t forget training Snickers because a photo shoot is
coming up soon for her and I.

When people ask me, “Are you coachable?” I told them my
story, because what am I going to say? “Yes, I am.” How do they know that? So
what do you think? Am I coachable? In my life I would love guidance and
direction from someone who has been there, but I’m finding just a lot of people
with talk and no action. I haven’t found the right person to learn from yet,
but I don’t let that stop me from learning and taking action on what I learn.

Am I coachable? People have not responded and wanted me on
their team. Would you want someone like me?

I like the word mentorship, mentors find you. Teamwork I think happens the same way. Yes, I think you are a good team member. ^_~

Thanks so much. I've started getting together a team for a mastermind. They are coming together!!!

I stay away from people that ask me are you coachable because to me it means they do not understand what teaching or coaching is all about and in general you'll find that a lot in this industry.

It reminds me of going to interviews and being asked are you flexible? Warning bells go off right away.

What they are really worried about is are you going to make their job difficult? Are you going to question them a lot? From their point of view waste their time? See they want their cake and to eat it too. They want your money but they don't want to spend the time answering all the questions newbies have and they get tired of receiving the same questions over and over again from different people. There way of dealing with it is to just have you do as they say. To them that is being coachable.

Being an expert in a field doesn't mean that person is a good coach or teacher and that is especially so in Internet Marketing. A good coach or teacher has patience and can work with all kinds of personalities. They can mould the person into the student they need them to be and use the students strengths to help them succeed.

A famous MLM marketer knew this and that is what made him a great coach. He knew how to communicate with his students because he understood that there are four main kinds of personalities and you need to speak with each of them differently. He applied it to his customers too.

Anyhow the point is, it's not you. Most people that apply themselves are "good" students and you have proven that with your experience. They are the problem and especially so in this industry. I suspect also at times they may have felt intimidated by your success. I am still waiting for the right "coach" (mentor) to come along. Don't give up. You'll find the right person eventually...but you know as Shields mentioned below maybe you are now becoming the coach.

Totally agree. Intimidated and they just want to be the boss and have me do what they say. And like you said not all people are able to teach well. So I feel like my guardians from above where watching out for me.

Well, Skyhorse, the question isn't if you are a good student or not; you are a Valedictorian.....and the word "coachable" can be synonymous with good student, fast learner, possessing potential, etc....so .... learning how to learn is a skill and a strength, and I believe we all have the ability to become great learners if we have great teachers.

So..the question, to me, really is: which talent/skill are you going to develop/commit to all the way? What is going to be the "IT" for you? Are you stopping too soon on each project? It's hard when you like so much and are good at so much...for you, you already have a knowing within yourself that you WILL master the skill--whatever it is at the time, but then what? So....where does Skyhorse finally give all his talent and learning "know-how" and go all the way? (or is that too limiting?)

OK, I'll admit, I wasn't valedictorian I was salutatorian. And I also went to both college and high school my senior year. So I'm good with book smart (sometimes) and also practical application and street smarts.

Both horses and money in just recently found as my passions. The wealth information I've been searching for for a long time and now I found it. I knew it was out there just where is it type of thing. But, we'll soon see.

When I read this I think of a man teaching a young guy how to build something and the young guy right away see where the old guy is going with the project and starts to move ahead even cutting out steps he feels are out dated or time wasting. the young guy stands back to examine his project and is very pleased with it. The old guy finishes days later. Years goes by and many of the projects the young guy completed fell down. The steps he eliminated where very necessary for them to stand the test of time. The old mans projects are still there and there was a lot more of his projects around, because other people recognized the quality and paid the price for the old guy to do the work.....Thats my story and I am sticking to it. ; O)

Ok, so here is my story from your story. You are saying after reading my story that you feel like I will be the old person who's projects stand the test of time because of such a solid foundation that I have to build on. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Success comes from learning and taking action and this is what you do. The ultimate reward is Success

I agree, learning and taking action. But the right kind of action is important as well.

I think everybody is coachable, but not everybody wants to be coached. Only you can answer that but Shields makes a good point too.

(In a very fun and upbeat voice, tone, and way) Coolcity, do I seem like someone who DOESN"T want to be coached? Someone who just half heartedly wants success and freedom. (Tilts head down and moves eyes to look at you) Come one, I don't want to be coached, come one now City, I thought you were cool.

No I don't think you come across that way at all (as somebody who doesn't want to be coached). In fact you have already achieved so much I wonder if some of the people you connect to may be a little over-awed when they meet you.

But surely the real answer is that if you didn't want to be be coached you would not be here! :)

That's the thing. Is that some I think just don't know what to do with a person like me on their team. Read my "how my eyes were opened..." blog City and you'll get more information that pertains to this subject.

I think it is just that people are different. You are obviously very knowledgeable about horses, something I know absolutely nothing about. Many people will admire your skills but others will find it intimidating.

Some people might think you are really clever to know all that stuff and to be able to train horses, while others might think that you are arrogant or that you may be more clever than they are, so they think you might undermine their position in a group.

Human nature is that most people do not like to admit that there is somebody who is more intelligent than they are. When did you ever hear anybody admit to being a bad driver? But I don't think that any of that means you are uncoachable.

I believe you are definitely coach-able. Be sure and take the time to fully investigate your own desires and make a life plan. Be as specific in your goals as you can even though some will change. I have found that just setting a goal and seeing your self in that setting will start to focus you on what steps have to be taken to get there. Life is to short not to enjoy the journey!

Thank you, great advice. I believe I have that long term type of things down of what I want in life, how I am going to get there, well, that's another story lol.

Did you mean are you coachable?

Hi Skyhorse, This is an amazing autobiography. You learn so quickly, so thoroughly, and you carry through from learning to doing. I only have one question for you; "How is it possible that you have not noticed that the coachable you has become the coach?"

Thanks Shields, my mom says I inspire her everyday with just how well I take action on doing things. Like the horses, just got out there and started doing it, and the hooves as well. I think if you read my blog, "How my eyes were opened..." that will explain your question. I am always looking to gain more knowledge and forget sometimes how far I have come and how much I have learned, because I am always looking at people that are the top. Tony Robbins, Les Brown, Deepak Chopra, Michael Beckwith, (Kyle and Carson) and they know WAY more then I do. So I forget where I started from and just how much I really have learned.
