Are Meta Tags Important For Your Website SEO?

Lots of questions from new followers this week.
They are mystified by Meta Tags.
How to use them?
Where to use them?
Will they help get their website ranked?
and some more, but these are the main questions asked.
If you are one of the members who follow Site Pro News you will probably have read one of their latest articles. The content is all about answering the title of this blog.
So are meta tags important for your website seo, and what are they?
Meta Tags are snippets of text that describe a page’s content. The tags don’t appear on the page itself, only in the page’s code.
In short, Meta Tags are the key components for search engines. They appear in the HTML code of a website page and tell search engines what your page is about.
Meta tags can definitely help you achieve a high rank with the search engines. Of course if you want to rank high in Google then you also need to have great content. The main goal of the Site Pro News article is to explain what the various Meta Tags are.
The bottom line is - Meta Tags can affect the way that users see your site in the search engines pages results and whether or not they will actually click through to your site.
For all you members who haven't seen a news snippet from Google, they have reduced the length of the Meta Description from 320 characters back to the original 160.
Remember what I said above - they tell search engines what your page is about.
Therefore make sure your description is bang on target for user experience.
By that I mean its the only piece of text that people see underneath your title in the search engine results pages so get it right first time, and don't forget those all important keywords.

Great reminder, Robert. I think it's quite important that you actually enter the meta description yourself rather than using 'automatically generated' meta tags - which you can have by ticking the appropriate box within Wordpress. Also, you can then use the meta description in social media as well, such as Google+, to accompany your link to a particular post. So it's worth taking the time.
Hi Robert, I did a post here a few months ago on the importance of meta description so I am pleased that you have confirmed my persuasion in this regard. I was still very new to all of this so my observations were quite fresh and a real eye-opener for me. Is the Meta Description important? Have a good weekend.
