How To Write Title Tags For Your Articles And Blogs

Lately I have seen such a lot of crap advice given out to new members about tags and especially Title Tags.

So for all you people who are struggling with this particular aspect of SEO here are some genuine easy to follow tips just for you.

With regards to search engine optimization, the single most important sentence in your article or blog that you will write for your website is the Title Tag of your main page. When you write it properly then you will have taken a major step towards getting your site well located in search engine queries for your important keywords.

Ahead of my step-by-step guide to writing title tags, let's define what they actually are to see why they are so important.

As you look at a web page in your browser, the writing in the blue strip above browser's commands (file, modify, view, etc.) is the title tag. On your actual html document the title tags is in the head portion between the notation<title>and</title>.

The title tag is important because it "tells" the search engine what the actual page is about, and in the content of your main page, what the website is all about.

I remember back in my school days that people used to take standard examinations in which they had to read a story and then answer this problem:

“What Would Be The Best Title For This Essay”?

Selecting on a title tag is something like answering this kind of question. You have to pick out the gist of your enterprise and highlight it in a sentence. So, take a look at your web site and get ready to begin, following these steps:

1. Leave your logos and sales pitch for another part of the website. Although it is a natural tendency to want to put your company name at the beginning of the title tags, you should remember that unless you are incredibly famous like Nescafe, people are not searching for you. So, put your most important keywords at the front of the title tags, and establish your brand name with your logo and other elements of the web page. In the event your company name includes your keywords then put it in the title tags, but not necessarily at the beginning.

Similarly, the title tag is no place for your sales pitch, so keep out flowery or extraneous adjectives, unless they are actual terms used in searches for your product or service.

2. Make sure your 3 to 4 most important keywords or keywords and key phrases appear in the title tag. The most crucial words should appear near to the beginning of the sentence, and they can be repeated within the sentence for added emphasis. For example, if I am offering cheap web design, then my title tags might look like this:<title> Internet Design: Affordable, Low Expense Web Design from Robert Allans Web Design Business </title>

3. The title tags can be longer than you think. Some suggestions say that the title tags should be no longer than 70 characters. This is true that only the first 70 characters will show in the most notable bar of the internet browser, but search engine automated programs will read the read the rest of the tag and the search engines will not penalize you for going over the seventy character mark. Take a look at highly positioned sites in heavily competitive categories and you will see examples of long title tags. Write down the tag according to your need to get your important keywords included in a sentence that best describes what your services or products is about.

(Google actually changed the number of characters you’re allowed in May this year, and I published a blog on this a few weeks ago - https://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool)

4. Place your geographical or niche-defining term in your title tags. If you are trying for a top ten or top 20 or so position for a term such as "web design" then you are really in for a difficult struggle. However, imagine my Robert Allans Web Style Company is found in Edinburgh, UK. Then instead of attempting the almost impossible task of getting the top rankings for the term "web design," it would be far better to get a high ranking in the geographical niche using a title tag such "Web Design, Edinburgh, UK: Low Cost Web Design in Edinburgh, UK by Robert Allans Web Design Company"

5. Vary the title tags on the inner web pages of your website. Despite a long title tag, it is not possible to highlight all the possible conditions which someone might use to find your website. This is not a problem if you make use of the other web pages of your website. Instead of simply having a title tag that says "services" my web page design firm could highlight "low cost, web design services" on that page. The "contact" web site could be used to emphasise the geographical location once again, etc. Various websites make the slip-up of repeating the same title tags on each of the inner pages of the site. Avoid this and use each of your page's titles to target important keywords and key word phrases. One small point - Do NOT get your Title tag mixed up with Headers.

Ok people, have a look at your website's title tags, and see if you can improve on them. Make the effort to get it right and you will be well rewarded.

Enjoy your day or evening wherever you are.

Much needed information Robert. However, I found your explanation confusing. I'm a rather visual and kinesthetic learner, so videos work great. Your rather long paragraphs baffled me and I would have benefited from a few more images and sample keywords of different topics.

I may send you a PM for a more specific example if that's okay? Thanks.

Hello George. There isn't a lot of space to include everything down the page that would give the complete picture so I have to compromise but try to get all the salient points in.
I believe I've done a pretty good job so far with all my blogs.
Of course its up to the individual how they interpret them.
Enjoy your day and thank you for your comment.
