First sale! and the method I used to get it
A few days ago I noticed I had made my first sale when I checked my account on one of the affiliate networks I subscribe to. WooHoo!!
It seems to have taken a long time and much effort to get to this point but may it be the first of many!
So how did this come about? A couple of months ago I watched a video training that Nathaniell had done on “Analysing traffic for content ideas and sales”.
In the video he explains how to use Google Analytics and Webmaster tools to look at the traffic you are getting and basically produce more content on those topics that are currently getting the most traffic.
On my site I had written a post targeting the keyword “Where do you buy travel insurance”. The post had short reviews of numerous different UK, US and global travel insurance companies. Some were offering general travel insurance while others offered more special insurance such as over 50s or those with pre-existing medical conditions. All the companies had affiliate links within the reviews.
I noticed in Google Webmaster tools that one of the companies that offered pre-existing medical conditions was getting a lot more impressions than anything else on my website. Even though the review for this company was only quite short on the actual post, because people were searching for it lots, Google was ranking my post on page 1. Even though the post does not rank well for my original targeted keyword ("Where do you buy travel insurance") it ranks on page 1 when people search in Google looking for reviews of that insurance company.
At this point I was getting clicks in the SERPS on my post but nothing in the way of sales. So I thought I would write a much more in depth review of that travel insurance company.
You can see in the attached screen shot from my Webmaster tools search analytics that this company occupies the top 3 positions in terms of impressions.
Now I am on page 1 of the SERPS for my original post and for my new in depth review and I think it was the longer review which led to the sale.
Watch Nathaniell’s video and apply the same methods to your site. You might get a good insight into what is most popular on your site and what people are looking for and then you can produce content knowing you’ll get traffic.
Have a nice day!
Neil
