I just got GDPR'd, no pancakes for me tonight!

I'd run out of eggs so was looking for a pancake recipe without them but the #1 first site up gave me the message my country was not allowed!!! I'm in Ireland and I'd heard others say sites in the US had been blocking them for even more serious things after May 25th, GDPR day.

I'm aware certain countries are blocked from free membership in here at WA because of the high amounts of spam from them but gdpr seems the only thing I can think of here in my case in Europe. It sucks! But there was so much panic in the run up to it and so much bad advice and over reaction by some sites and some vultures preying on site owners that it's sad but understandable some peeps would just wash their hands of the whole thing.

Different types of sites online

That said, not all of those sites are regular affiiliate sites like us, and not all so innocent - the whole gdpr thing was an eyeopener as regards the types of advertising and cookies and third party info going on with some sites - not the regular stuff most of us in here use.

Some sites will offer you a list of 50-100+ advertising companies that you can manually choose to opt out of that you didn't even know were on your weather site or tv site or pancake site!!

And I've heard a lot of brick and mortar businesses have been hit very hard with ridiculous rules and clearly bad advice costing them thousands and doubling their workload to get double permission for stuff no one cares about anyway and could never in a million years lead to breach of sensitive data. I've written before about gdpr and won't bother again unless we are forced into it, because as usual practice on the ground will be different from the original rules anyway, trends and traditions tend to take over...

What about our profile pics at WA?

One thing I had wondered about was in here at WA when we share blog posts with each others' photos on them - should we be blurring those pics now in the case of Europeans or is it considered fair game because someone already offered their pic to the platform?

I've been blurring my screenshots that I share, I always sort of did in the past as I'm aware it's another person whose permission I had not requested, but seem doubly aware now - how about you guys, opinions on this?

Mary

ps I had to go with a green smoothie in the end, the mucky brown type that tastes better than it looks, better for me :D

The WA Pancake!

Ok, this is my recipe but thanks to the kind help being provided in the comments I'm going to work on the WA no-egg version [for those emergencies when there's no eggs! lol!]

tablespoon coconut flour
half cup oats
banana
[something instead of egg] <---remains a mystery for now!
gigantic spoon of cocoa lol [carob is sweeter]
spice

I can see from Marion's pics that some recipes are calling for oil in there, hm....I'll be testing this out... :)

Great post and I too was really unaware of some of the problems with having to blur faces on images we may have taken ourselves. Thanks for the information.

Wayne

Thanks Wayne, it seems europe wants that for its residents without first getting their permission, in theory anyway

but we can still post pics of the americans and other nationalities apparently lol!

I'm not sure anyone will apply it though europeans could become a lot more demanding about it

and some people tweet our posts with profile images to several thousand followers, it won't be such nice marketing with blurred faces!

Thanks, Mary. Good to know.

Wayne

Hello, LMM. Appreciated your post. Had never thought about images we might have taken ourselves being involved with GDPR. Good idea to blur faces, I think. HRH

Thanks HRH, seems it's been swept under the carpet as an issue in here!

Thanks for lifting the corner of the carpet and showing us the dirt!

Hi Mary, it's so sad how greed ruins good things; oh well, it's the world we live in. Smoothie cheers!

Thanks Edwin, LOL smoothie cheers!

You are so right, it's a real eye opener as to why some sites exist, thankfully it's a different ethos in here at WA and so many beautiful people turned up on my post here to remind me of that :)

Hey Moz! It never occurred to me that we should consider blurring out images of people on our sites! But I have definitely felt your pain. Right after the whole GDPR thing went into effect, there were many U.S. news sites I could no longer view. I guess they don't care about their international following!

Glad you managed to have a healthy dinner! :D

Alanna

Wow Alanna, sounds like I'm lucky it's taken me this long to get blocked! I did notice the Irish news sites had such a long list of third parties it was mind blowing, like so much sneaky stuff going on behind our backs with all that! Yet I'm not sure how or if it affected us, maybe just too much info after GDPR with them!

Yes the ads are way more important to them than the users!!

I was touched at all the help in here :D

Thanks Mary

Thanks for sharing.

G'Day Mozza,

Does this help?

LOLOLOL! That's so kind of you! You guys are so cute! :D

ROFL Marion

Aww, Mozzy. Pancakes. What a funny way to be reminded about the GDPR requirements!

I agree, it has been interesting seeing just what sorts of information management practices sites have owned up to since then. And I've no doubt that there have been many consultants offering outrageously-priced services to help nervous business owners make adjustments for GDPR.

Should any of these businesses find themselves less than compliant, and threatened with fines, I wonder how many of these consultants are willing to wear the possibly liabilities attached to their advice?

We had some great discussions back in my undergrad info-sec ICT classes about privacy which touched on the topic. Our own legislation here in Australia has been pretty tight since the 1988 privacy laws were introduced, and will mean that businesses here which are already privacy compliant, need to make only minor adjustments to be up to speed with GDPR.

But the landscape such laws cover is about as stable as sand, and no matter how well you think the law has it covered, the law will always need to keep evolving as the information terrain does. But it often only does so slowly...

But that's by the by. What sort of pancakes were you trying to make?

LOLOLOL!!! Mozzy is so cute, I keeled over laughing here...! I'm hearing it in an Aussie accent too :D

Yes, great point about the consultants, I did notice almost everyone was including loopholes about not being liable! My own dad had a company try to sell him thousands of dollars of an update to software for developing photos - a part of the machine that develops the photos hangs on to the images some random number of days and they are cashing in saying oh we have to shorten that lol - no one even knew they were there or would bother with them - but he just read the rules and told them to stuff that advice and their pressure to get him to part with his cash!

This is my pancake recipe, works well with carob moreso than cocoa...

tablespoon coconut flour
half cup oats
banana
[something instead of egg]

Hahahaaa, yes it was tragically Australian. And that awful dipthong is present no matter what language I'm trying to speak. I can't shake it! There's always a whiff of it. :]

Hey, I love ricotta pancakes, and the eggless variety are like fluffy little cheesecakes. SO good!

I also love that your dad stood his ground on info management after reading the rules. They've been devised with businesses such as his in mind, right? The Rules?

THE RULES

(you have to imagine I said that like the secret society gathering in Hot Fuzz said 'the greater goooood').

LOL!

Also trying to hear THE RULES in your Aussie accent :P

yeah, he's 74 and just hopped onto the official sites and cut through the crap himself saving thousands - in this country they give 'silver surfer awards' to people in their 60s and 70s who can learn to find the on button on the computer and maybe extend to facebook lol, such an insult to that age group!!

...ooh, ricotta pancakes! I never even thought of using cheese..mmmmmmm!!!!

I bet someone from the U.S. here could take a screenshot or two and send it to your PM. Haha!

lol, rub it in :D

we may come up with a WA pancake recipe of our own, for days when the eggs run out

coconut flour
oats
banana
[something instead of egg]
cocoa
spice

! :D
