Dementia or Alzheimers

People have commonly confused the two. Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia according to 70% of cases. There are several other types all with different causes.

  • Vascular dementia caused by high blood pressure
  • Alcohol related dementia
  • Parkinsons' dementia
  • Frontotemporal demebtia
  • Mimicked conditions caused by certain medical conditions

A correct diagnosis leads to the right medicines, remedies and support. Knowing you have Alzheimers instead of another type of dementia might lead to a cognition enhancing drug instead of an antidepressant. Much of this research has been done at Johns Hopkins memory and treatment center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dementia

A catchall phrase that encompasses that cause chronic memory loss, personality changes or impaired reasoning. Alzheimers is just one of them.

In order to be tagged dementia, the disorder must be severe enough to interfere with your daily life. Forgetting how to dress or feed one's self are prime examples.

Treatment requires a doctor to find you have two or three cognitive areas declining in function. These areas include disorientation, disorganization, language impairment and memory loss. To make that diagnosis a doctor or neurologist will administer several mental skill challenges.

In the Hopkins verbal learning test you are tasked with memorizing then recall of a list of twelve words. A few similar words may be thrown in too as a challenge. Another test, also used to evaluate driving skills is used. This requires drawing lines to connect a series of letters and numbers in a complicated sequence.

Alzheimer

Takes away the ability to carry out even simple tasks. A cure remains elusive. Researchers have identified biological evidence: amyloiid plaques and entanglements in the brain They can be seen microscopically or by advanced PET scan imaging that uses a newly discovered tracer that binds to the proteins. These can also be detected in cerebral spinal fluid.

Unfortunately there is no definitive test for treatment. It is often a guessing game until an autopsy has been performed. The guessing, however is accurate up to 90% of the time. Much of this is cutting edge treatment developed in the last five years

This is great stuff. My dad (of blessed memory) had vascular dementia, and it was awful. I watched him lose gross motor skills, and forget the most beautiful memories that created the story of his life. It is a very sad thing to watch. I bought puzzles that were color coded for dementia patients that he loved to do with me, yet he couldn't match the shapes.

On another note, is this your niche? I don't think I have seen your site. What is the link?
Thanks,
/a.

Keans, I am 81 yrs old and have no sign of Alzheimer's or any heart problems because my Dad had it thirty years ago and I did some research and found out that Omega 3 Fatty Fish could help. So I started taking it 30 years ago and have been taking 5 pills each day of 1000 MG and I know it worked for me. My Doctor said they haven't proven that it works, and I laughed at her and told it worked for me. Just buy it at Walmart for about $10.00 for a couple of hundred pills. You need the lubrication in your body to make it all work, and that does it for me. I have also been on something else for 20 years I would be glad to tell you about if you ask. Don Raposo

I love salmon. I get my omega 3 straight from the source!

That is not enough, you need a lot more than part of salmon once or twice a week, you need it everyday..

You've piqued my interest -- what are you taking...??

Hi Amy I have been taking Omega 3 Fatty Fish Oil for 30 years and I have been taking Juice Plus for twenty years. I was convienced by a doctor friend to look at the science behind it, and I was impressed with it, and my family and I have been taking it that long, with no health problems. Just because I sell it I don't want you to ignore the science go to my webpage and read it for yourself. I just take the fruits and vegatables and it runs around $45.00 a month. Here is the site "www.juiceplus.com/+dr82712"

My grandma died a couple of weeks ago and had Alzheimers.

My father had dementia. It's a horrible disease.

These are scary.

Great subject to post. I worked in mental health for some time and find the subject fascinating. I worked with someone who’s frontal lobe dementia would be exasperated when they had an infection. It was seen as a direct link between physical and mental health. Thought provoking stuff.

Excellent comparison of the two. Research is key to demonstrating authority on a subject. Thank you.

Hi, Mike.
Great topic for discussion.

I'm doing some research into this disorder because Mum suffers from Alzheimers or is it a specific form of Dimentia.

Nothing determined so far. She was fine until Dad passed away in 2013. Physically she is fine but her mind has taken a serious nose dive over the last 4 years.

There is such a fine line between the two and enough is not known at the present time.

Thank you for bringing this most important issue to our attention.

Kindest regards,

Paul.

I'm sorry to hear that Paul., You're great WA family Paul!

Thank you, Michael.
Have a most glorious day.

Paul.

Hi, Jimmy.
Thank you for your input, insight and like.

You seem to be very knowledgeable in this field.

I'll be looking into Ivor Cummins later today and if it is of value, will pass it along to many friends suffering with Type 2.

Kindest regards,

Paul.

Good afternoon Mike,

These so-called modern time ailments are most of the time caused by bad food, toxins in air and water. We are so stupid to poison ourselves.

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

These are big topics in the UK at present as we become aware that our social care is failing many people at the moment.
With populations getting older and people living longer in retirement, how to deal with the increasing numbers that need our support should be on the forefront of all our minds.
Thanks for the insights as usual, Mike.
Gail

Thank you Gail!

You need to read what I have been doing for the last 30 years to prevent that from happening to me like my Dad.
