Hello! My name is Mike Holm. I am a husband, father of two (1 boy, 1 girl), and former gymnast with an MBA and MSHSA.

I began my career doing sales and marketing in the insurance and finance industry, and spent almost 10 years with the same company, with a short stint as a sales representative and business consultant with a small business intelligence firm. Upon the birth of our first child, I was given the chance to be a stay at home father, which was awesome and challenging all at the same time.

During my time away from the professional world, I decided to change career paths and went back to school and earned my second Masters degree, the first being an MBA, and this one being a Master of Science in Health Services Administration. I am currently in an Administrative role with the University of Minnesota, operating within the Mayo Clinic Health System.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, playing guitar and drums (anything to do with music), snowboarding in the winter, and boating and wakeboarding in the summer.

My ultimate goal with Wealthy Affiliate is to earn enough supplemental income so that my wife will be able to drop a day or two from her role as a pharmacist, and spend more time with our children at home. Maybe I'll be able to quit the 9-5, too!

I think these are very realistic goals, although $10,000 per week could take some time to reach and may need more time in due course.

Thank you! I like to set high goals, and the $10k a week is very long-term at this point.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Hi Christene9. You're right. I have no idea what to choose for a niche. It struggling with finding what would interest me to write about consistently, yet have well-respected and commonly purchased (preferably repeatable purchased) items.

Any ideas/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi Mike

Hope all is going well?

Sincere apologies for the delayed reply. Weather caused a little havoc with floods, making it hard to float and work. Hope I am forgiven?

To be honest, I am no expert at most niches and thus would not know what would work or fail without doing a few days of proper research. However, I can give you advice on finding a niche with potential.

First and most importantly, learn how to do proper keyword research if you are not already familiar with it. WA has lots of training materials available on this. Keywords are the backbone of every promotional article, article, website and so forth. You need to know how to use them correctly.

Blogging and affiliate marketing is a long term commitment. The more content you publish, the more attraction you will get and thus make more sales. Your niche must have potential to grow into an info hub, meaning, you will always have ideas for new articles. Write down all the things that interest you already, hobbies, skills, things you feel passionate about and so forth and go from there. While researching these ideas, you will most likely stumble unto other ideas as well.

Choose an evergreen niche. Meaning, there must always be a demand for information and product for a long time to go. Example, "Christmas gifts" is a great niche, lots of traffic BUT, only at Christmas time. Pet care, DIY, Life hacks, health and weight loss, tech, gardening, illnesses and so forth are examples of niches that will most likely last forever.

In addition to finding an evergreen niche, it must also be something with a product demand, like the examples mentioned above. People will always spend money to lose weight, give their pets the best care or to be healthy. No matter their financial situation, the majority will still buy in these niches. To sum it up, choose something with buying and traffic potential.

Go to busy websites and social platforms to determine the popularity and buying potential of your niche. (Facebook groups and pages have something on about anything you can think of) Write down suggestions, questions, product recommendations and so forth to determine if there is a true need for the information you wants to offer.

The classifieds/online stores like eBay and Amazon are also good places to research product potential. Products with good feedback, high ratings and "sold out" indicators are signs that the specific product is in demand.

Unfortunately, we live in a financial crunch, people do not spend so easily anymore and would only focus on things that is needed. Thus, the more reason to pick niches with buyers potential.
Think about it this way, somewhere in the world, there are lots of people with problems and they would spend money to make it go away. Find those problems, give free information and offer a great product. If you can do this, you will become successful.

Like always, please do not hesitate to give me a shout if you have questions or if the above is unclear.

Hi Christine. Absolutely no problem on the response time. Frankly, I am thankful to get a response. Also, I hope all is ok as it sounds like you may have been negatively effected by flooding. This is all great advice, and I greatly appreciate it! I've been doing a lot of research and thinking about finding a niche, and the conclusions on all fronts have led me to pretty much your exact advice. I'll keep plugging away, and hopefully decide on a niche soon.
Thanks again, and take care!

Yes, definitely have questionable weather this year. Replaced my internet lines due to storm damage today, so hopefully some tree will not fall on them again.

Take your time with niche research, it is something one has to double check before making a final decision. Horrible to choose a niche, only to find out a year later that it is saturated or not interesting enough anymore.

Like always, you know where to find me if you get stuck.
