Too often people think that all pictures on Google are free to use, and unfortunately they are not. Even the ones that are free to use, you must give proper attribution to the author of that picture. In this tutorial I will show you how to do this.

HOW TO FIND FREE PICTURES ON GOOGLE

When you do a search for pictures on Google you will notice just under the search bar the words “Search Tools” next to other selections, see above image. What you need to do is click on “Search Tools” and that will give you the options shown in the image below.

You then want to click on “Usage Rights” and then select “Labeled for Reuse” as seen in the below image. The pictures that are now displayed are the ones that are free to use. However most of them will still require you to give proper attribution to the author before you use them.

Thank you for this tutorial, Robert. I, like you prefer to use the free images, but it's good to know how to give proper attribution if needed. :)

You are welcome Judy. It is because of the steps needed to use a free picture that requires attribution that makes me want to use the pictures without attribution all the more.

Great post Robert. It seems much easier to use the images that don't require attribution. So do you know what penalties there are for not giving proper attribution? It almost seems like it works on the honor system unless there is someone actually looking for violations.
We appreciate all you do Robert, thanks.

I agree that pictures that fall under the CC0 and PD licenses that do not require attribution are the easiest and safest to use. 98% of the time those are the ones I use.

Though it does seem like attribution is not a big deal unless someone is looking for a violation, you will never know when that violation will be filed against you. It is better to be safe than not giving attribution and having someone sue you if they desire.

Hi Robert... thank you for this tutorial! I always wonder if I'm doing things right when I get to the 'Labelled for Reuse"... Ummm seems like I need to go back to my pictures I've used and check to see if I need to give attribution... great info...!!

You are welcome. I believe many people just think that if pictures fall under the Labeled for Reuse that they can freely use the picture and not give any kind of attribution.

Only CC0 and Public Domain pictures can be used without attribution but you cannot find them on Google without looking at the licensing information first.
