Some people view leadership as a service in the sense that it seeks to meet the need of someone or of the group by performing needed functions on the other hand leadership is a processes of influencing the activities and behavior of individual or group in efforts towards goal achievement in a given situation.

Leadership involves an inter-relationship between the leader and the subordinates. Therefore the leader should consider the needs of the subordinates and the demand of the situation. The inter-relationship of the subordinates and the leader is determined by the leader's style of leadership. The best style is the is the one most appropriate in a given situation and it should also be situational such that it depends largely on the demand of the task.

Subordinates are different individuals, so the leader has to consider their differences, backgrounds, experiences, behavior and attitudes towards work and team spirit. The leader should also consider the maturity level of his or her subordinates There are certain instances where the leader will need to vary his or her style when dealing with subordinates. The leader may be forced by circumstances to tell the subordinates what to do.

Subordinates of low maturity are both unable and unwilling to perform the set tasks. These kind of subordinates need a leader's clear direction, close supervision and orientation if possible. In dealing with these subordinates, the leader should tell them what to do, provide supportive behavior to avoid unsatisfying end results. It shows that this group cannot proceed without the leader's directives and may lead to failure.

Some subordinates of low to moderate maturity are willing to do some work but are unable to take responsibility for a certain task. These subordinates need a leader who can sell them on what needs to be done. The leader here may be bound to some instances to use directive behavior, but also being very supportive. Here the group may reach effective end results with forceful efforts of the leader.

Other subordinates have moderate to high level of maturity. They have ability to perform specific tasks but lack confidence and interest. These kind of subordinates need a participative leadership style. The leader should provide motivation and reinforcement to build their personal confidence for goal achievement. Further more, there are subordinates with a high level of maturity. They have self motivation and self direction. These kind of subordinates need assistance from the leader who will be employing delegating style . With this group efficiency and good end results will be met.

For a task to be accomplished it should be well structured, objectives clearly defined and necessary activities planned. In some instances where the objectives are not well defined and task not well structured, there may be no progress. Therefore the leader will have to change style hence leadership is a dynamic process.

Very good summary of the Situational Leadership Theory. If you are leading a team then the actions you describe can certainly be necessary and also very successful in certain situations.

I am curious as to whether you had a chance to study leadership prior to being in WA of if you started researching it since joining WA. I used to lead a Global Leadership degree program where we taught leadership theory and practice in several countries in Africa (Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, & Uganda)

You have written that, "The best style is the is the one most appropriate in a given situation." While I agree that situational leadership can be the best style at times, it may also not be the right method at other times or in certain types of situations.

Why do you feel that this style is the best one to use?

Hmmm. Not so interesting. I don't think there is value here for your system. We are all equals here. Nobody is no better off than everyone else. Sorry this is a democracy.
Ken.

I like it you have a clear objective in the rolls of leadership and subordinates.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Very interesting.

An interesting perspective on leadership !

Lot of good thought, Molly..whether we agree with all or part or disagree. It seems to me that we are all both a lot alike and a lot different. We can only lead those who want to be led and only teach those who want to be taught. I think we have neither the ability nor the right to change people into what we wish them to be. Enjoyed your post.

Molly...the only thing I would question is what you say about subordinate. Although its true that not everyone aspires to participation in leadership are more than happy to follow. Having said that I see the roll of a true leader is to lead by example with a goal to teach every one of his/her followers/team members...how to be leaders in their own right. We could delve deeper into this most interesting subject but for now I firmly believe in an timeless adage that says, Feed a man a fish & you'll feed him for a day...Teach him how to fish & he will feed himself! In short leadership to me is about self reliance, independence, personal power, individual freedom, wealth, both real & intangible values. All the same I respect your views.

Greetings Molly, Well done yet again ! Great topic, Great content, Great layout ! A very gifted writer , if there ever was !! Thanks for the affirmation on a much studied topic. High Regard, Aussie Matt ....

Good post, very true and informative! The only thing that I will say that in the end if there is no progress, while the leader may have to alter his or her particular style, the subordinates would have to alter their style a bit as well. Communication is a two-way street. One person can't do it all. You succeed in the end by learning from each other.

Your comments, critics, motivation and appraises are appreciated
