There's no shortage of social media sharing plugins available. Many are meant to allow your visitors to share your pages and posts on their timelines, boards and so on. Others might provide additional information such as number of times shared, etc.

Today, I'm sharing a plugin designed to help your, the content creator, share your pages and posts to various social media platforms automatically and help your save precious time that can be better spent creating more content.

I hope your find this post useful and, if your do, please don't forget to click the like button and leave me a comment too!

Why?

We all know that social media can play a big part in bringing traffic to our websites. Depending on how many social media accounts your have, it can take a large chunk of your day just to share your posts on each one.

I'm currently part of the Super Affilaite Challenge (SAC) for 2019 here at Wealthy Affiliate (WA) and this month's module has us working with social media but, more importantly, not losing ourselves in the time sink that social media tends to be. That's why I'm writing this post today.

I'll admit, I'm one of those guys who will go to Facebook or Pinterest with the intention of sharing my latest article, only to discover an hour later that I'm browsing some group or clicking on some pin that caught my eye. This can be a real problem for those of us that should be focusing elsewhere.

Before I tell you the name of the plugin, let me share my requirements that helped me to narrow it down...

Requirements

There are a ton of social sharing plugins and platforms available. Before your select one, your have to know what your need from it. Here are my requirements:

Services the Social Networks I Use

I've been playing around with various social media sharing plugins lately and my primary focus has been finding one that works with all the social media platforms I use. Those are:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • YoutTube

Cost

There are a few plugins and standalone applications out there that do meet my first requirement but my second one was cost. I was looking for something relatively cheap or free to use. The plugin I found has a free version that meets my needs.

There is one exception, it doesn't actually handle posting to my comments thread for my YouTube channel. I'll have to continue to do that manually. It does have the bonus of supporting Tumblr. I just don't use that platform. That said, it does a lot more if your want to pay for the additional features.

Ease of Use

The final part of the puzzle is that it needs to be easy to use. Setup wasn't really a concern of mine, as long as the daily use aspect was simple and quick. That said, setup wasn't difficult either with this particular plugin.

The Reveal...

I've found a plugin that meets all three of my criteria. That plugin is Nelio Content.

How Does it Work?

So how does Nelio Content work? Actually it's quite easy. You install the plugin, authorize it to access your various social media accounts (even down to which pages, boards, etc. it has access to) and set your options from within the page or post editor. When your click Publish or Update, Nelio Content gets to work and your content is shared to the social media platforms your chose.

What's nice is, your can also integrate the plugin with your Google Analytics and track statistics such as how many visits came from specific social accounts. This is great for seeing where your get the most traction per article.

Nelio Content has other features as well but they are part of the pay-for version and, as such, I don't use them myself at this time.

What are the Limitations?

So there are a few things to know about the free version...

Limited Profile Count and Access

The free version will only allow your to access 1 social profile per network. The paid one will give your up to 10. For the savings, I can live with this limitation. Besides, I have separate accounts for all of my sites anyway so I don't really have a need to share to multiple accounts within the same platform.

The free version doesn't let your access certain aspects of some social media sites like posting to a LinkedIn Group for example. The pay-for version does. This one is a little bit of a setback for me but not much. For example, I have it set to share to my site related page on Facebook. I then log into that page and share the post to my primary feed and Facebook group. That way the post is on my feed, on the page and in the group. If I had the pay-for version, it would do all of this for me. I do the same thing on my LinkedIn account.

On the other hand it does let me select to share to multiple Pinterest boards.

One Chance Per Day

Now this one is a semi-big one. You can only schedule posts for a specific day slot once per day. What I mean by this is Nelio Content has options for today, tomorrow, next week, etc. When your're setting up your social share options for that particular post, your can only do so for one of those slots per day. If your want to schedule additional shares, your'll need to wait until tomorrow and setup the next one. This limitation is removed in the pay-for version.

I tend to do the today one and share to all of my social media platforms immediately. I can always come back next week and share again.

Image Selection

This really isn't a negative but more of an FYI... For most of the social media platforms, the featured image is selected for your automatically, but you can change it and even have different ones for each social platform if you want. For Pinterest and Instagram, your have to select the image yourself as the featured image is not selected automatically.

Text

This is another one that's not a big deal for me... When you setup your sharing, you get to specify whatever text your want to include. Be aware that your can't change it per platform when setting them up in that single time slot your have access to per day. It will be the same across all platforms.

For me, this is fine. I try to keep my message the same across all the platforms anyway. The issue is, I need to make sure my character count stays within the limitations of the shortest allowed of all the platforms (I'm talking to your Twitter). If I want to have longer messages for the other platforms, I'll need to set them up separately another day (because I can only access one time slot option per day).

Editing

This one is a big one. Once your've made your social sharing selections, entered your text and clicked save, that's it. You can't edit or delete them. The only way, I've found to remove them is to deactivate and wipe the plugin settings and start over. That means setting up the social media profile access for each account and everything. Now, if your have the pay-for version your can edit and delete them without issue.

Fill Automatically

This one is a really cool feature and it looks like your can use it as a free user but your can't. What it will do is fill in your time slots with share schedules and what not (which your can't delete using the free version) but, the feature is only active in the pay-for version so your may think it's going to share based on that really cool schedule it shows but it won't. So, if your're going to use the free version, don't click that button.

Are There Other Plugin Options?

Of course there are. This particular plugin just hit the marks I needed. Now, if your're using other social media platforms that this one doesn't cover, it may not be a good fit for your. In the end, only your can really make the decision on which tool meets your needs or even if your need one at all.

Conclusion

I know the limitation section is the longest one but I wanted to be sure your knew the restrictions and "nice to know" tips to save yourself some time.

Now, your can remove all of these limitations by paying for the plugin but it's $29 per month per site, so that can be a bit pricey for many.

In the end, I recommend your take a look at it and see if it will work with your workflow. For me, it saves me quite a bit of time vs having to share my posts manually each time. I also like the analytics provided. It's nice to see which platforms perform the best on a per-post basis.

So, what are your thoughts? Have your used the plugin before? Do your use another that your think might be better? How much time do your spend sharing on your social media platforms? Let me know by commenting below.

Thank your,

Scott

Hi Scott
Thank you for this info - great to know about!
The paid for version is pretty steep for me, I buy on the South African Rand, so $29 per month adds up significantly for me.
I really appreciate the detail you put into the disadvantages of the free version too.
Blessings
Louise

I make the free version work for me but I am looking at alternatives to see if I can find the perfect match.

Never heard about this plugin Scott. I will check it out.

Thanks for sharing this. Sounds like it is definitely a time-saver. And, it might help me be more engaged with sharing my content to Social Media (which, for some reason, is something I dread).

I'll definitely check it out.

Awesome

Just hoping you don't have people following you on all platforms. I hate seeing the same post from the same person show up on all my social media at the same time. If you could stagger them, that would be even better.

Good point, I can but then I'll have to do it manually on different days or subscribe to the plugin at $29 per month per site...

As you get bigger, it can be worth it. Guy Kawasaki purposely would post at different times on different days to hit different audiences. He was brilliant at it.

Thanks for sharing Scott.

Happy to share!

Buffer is quite good. The free version allows only 3 social media accounts to post to. But you can schedule posts. Plus you can add a picture and any other words you want at the time.
It's not a plug in though.

I use Buffer only in as much as it allows Nelio Content to post to Instagram. I haven't used it for anything else. What I love is I can handle all of my social posting from within the WordPress editor with Nelio Content.

I mostly use it for Instagram I must admit. I use Social Jukebox for regular posts to Linked In, Facebook and Twitter.
It is a paid platform but I was part of the beta testing so get it at a fraction of the cost.

Nice

It is. Same with Weebly, my original website. I get 10 sites for much less than most people pay for 1 because I was there in the early days.

Hi Scott,

Thank you for the share. Much appreciated.

Michael

I'm happy to help.

Not come across that one before but there are hundreds out there. I finally settled on the free Social Pug a few months ago and am occasioanlly tempted to buy it :-)

The problem with posting to all sites at once is that I use slightly different text for each. Eg, I post to a friend's FB timeline with a personalised comment and to my FB Page I add a line which I also add to LinkedIn and Twitter but I also add tags at the end to Twitter. I create a pin for each post in Canva for Pinterest and then you have to add other info to the Pin. You can pin directly from Canva but it lacks all the essential info so I can't see the point.

My routine runs fairly smoothl;y but it does take a lot of time :-(

i'm sure this will help a lot of people, thanks for sharing,
Ian

Will check this out
Thanks for sharing all the best

Janet

I'm loving it so far.

This is awesome! So i already have a social media plugin installed. Do I want to install this one and then delete the other one?

This one is only for you on the back end. It won't replace one that allows your visitors to share...
